Accused or Stkaljno Check. Dan Norden is on trial in the Justice Court for the theft of a check which has an unusual history. The check was drawn on the Merchants National Bank of this city for M 13. It was signed by Newton Courier and made payable to J. TV. Evans. It was transferred to a man named XArsen, who resides out of town. Xrftrsen brought It to the city with him and it was stolen from him in the North Hnd. "W. Thompson, a saloonkeeper at 4S"4 First street, cashed the check, but thought It called for 141.13 and paid that amount. Norden is accused of stealing It. Facto Serious chargb. H. Deipschletz, formerly a resident of this city, was ar rested In San Francisco Tuesday after noon and w.U be brought back here to face the charge of obtaining money un der false pretenses. His arrest was caused at the complaint of B. F. Singer. a note broker of this city, who bought a note from Delpschletz for J60, purporting to have been issued by C. D. Hoffman, a grocer, of 809 Mississippi avenue. When the note was presented to Hoffman, he declared it a forgery. Ti ck Hoket or Labor Herx and Get Rich. Three ad ditional charges of embezzlement have been filed against Louis Kloos. the young man who was formerly collector for M. Karde & Son, who was arrested for fraud hv Constable Wagner on Tuesday. In. the Justice Court yesterday his ball was in creased to J1500 and the young man's father, who is a resident of New York City, has been telegraphed, that he may rome to his son's aid. Young Kloos, In default of bail, is still In custody. Rose Mass Mcsnsa Tonight. Under the auspices of the Peninsula Rose Asso ciation, a mass meeting of the citizens of that district will be held tonight In the hall at Peninsula to discuss the wholesale cultivation of roses for the next rose festival. J. B. Pllklngton will give a talk on rose culture and there will be a short programme. The Peninsula Band will furnish music The plan is to distribute G0.00I) rose bushes to people on the Peninsula within the next few weeks. Waoow cTruce Br Car. Robert Steph ens, a teamster for the Portland Bash A Door Company, was painfully Injured yesterday afternoon at Milwaukie and 5II1 way streets. Stephens tried to drive past a wagon on the street while a car was approaching from the rear. He pulled over on the car tracks and the motorxnan falling to bring his car to a stop. Stephens' wagon was struck. He was thrown out into the street, sustaining a scalp wound and severe bruises. Wtu, Hold Axxual Meeting. The an nual meeting of the Mothers and Teachers' Club of the Brooklyn School will be held In the assembly hall of the srhoolhouse at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow aft ernoon. At that tune the election of officers w-ill be held, reports will be re ceived and a programme for the year will be adopted. All mothers and others In the district are Invited to be present at this meeting. P.vnts CtUB Meets. The Dante Club will hold Its regular meeting at the audi torium of the public library at 8 o'clock tonight. The club has recently been In creased by 30 new members and the reg ular meetings are being better attended at each session. Tonight the members will discuss the works of Kdmund Dante and will listen to various Interpretations of the great author's views. Fish Pictures On Exhibit. At the Srllwood Branch Library, on I'matllla Avenue, a large collection of pictures In water colors, showing fish of many kinds, la on display. These pictures show the fish In their natural colors and are of great educational value. The library Is open from 2:30 until 9:39 P. M. The plc .tures will be kept in the library for sev eral months. Prepara tions are being made to run streetcars access the Union-avenue bridge over cAil llvan's Gulch In the near future. The double tracks across the bridge bave been connected up with the street rails, and yesterday Iron posts for the trolley wire were being placed. Street Men. Sixth and Alder streets, J10O In the Municipal Court yesterday for hav ing served a quail to a customer. He pleaded guilty to the charge. His em ployers, Strobel A Barenstecher. were also arrested on the same charge, but they were dismissed after the steward had pleaded guilty. The case was brought before the court by Deputy Game Warden Green, who ordered quail at the Hof Brau and was served with It by Tarbell. Club's Opening Postponed. The formal opening of the home of the Young Men's Catholic Club, of Alblna, has been postponed from tonight until next Tues day evening, when preparations for the reception of visitors will be completed. Gutsprnment Discharges Many AVit - nesses, Who Will Apparently Xot lie Needed. if The land-fraud trials of the defendants In the Pacific Furniture & Lumber Com pany Is slowly drawing to a close and t'nited States Attorney John MoCourt stated yesterday at the close of the day's court' session that he expected to have all of the evidence for the prosecution In by Friday afternoon. A number of the wit nesses for the Government were dis charged yesterday and It Is evident that a number of the witnesses who have been summoned will not be heard at all. For the first time since the trial began, though the t.3timony of W. H. Phlpps. the defendants, A. H. Hedderly, Richard Hynes and others, who were In charge of the company's office at Los Angeles, were linked closely In the alleged con spiracy. Phlpps Is related to the Pitts burg Phlpps and he was hunted up by Hynes and Induced to buy several thous and dollars' worth of stock In the com pany. He made two trips to Port Orford and was to have taken up a timber cleam. Ha testified that he was employed by the company at a salary of J75 a month and that the Pacific Furniture Land Company paid all of his expenses. Phlpps swore he became dissatisfied and demanded his money back. He told of making many calls at the office of the company and of the conversations he had with defendants Smith,- Hynes, Hedderly and others. The witness said he never got his money back and all he had been able to collect on the due bills given him by Hedderly. was J1K). W. T. Kerr. who. from all of the testi mony so far offered at the trial, was the "Man Friday" for the company, was again on the stand yesterday. Kerr pleaded guilty and gave one of his rea sons for doing so by saying he was too poor to engage an attorney. On the stand he swore that the stock In his store was worth about $9000 and that he owned his own home. Attorney John Manning, during his cross-examination, tried to make Kerr admit he had been promised an immunity bath by the Government. The witness stoutly denied that any prom ises had been made to Tilm. The testimony of W. R. Hearst, was much the same as other witnesses. He swore he was approached by K.err and urged to take up a claim and that Kerr had promised to furnish the money.
