Farrell. 2. 4 Once again society, with its. women handsomely gowned and Its men smartly groomed, paid homage to the King of Portland just now, the horse, and the audience tha Journeyed to the Oriental building at the Lewis and Clark Fair grounds was larger by at least 1000 than yesterday. The programme offered for the second day of the Hunt Club Horse Show was even better. If such a thing were possible, than that of the first day, and beyond a doubt the gowns worn by the vomen were even handsomer than those worn on the opening night. The programmes shown in the after noon and in the evening held the atten tion of every one. In the afternoon so Interested became the throng that they were loath to leave when the last class was shown. The masterful high Jump ing of J. D. Farrell's Fox Catcher, the high school drill by the riders of the Hunt Club, together with special features and Judging of the various classes... held the people until long after 11 o'clock. Clnb Will Make No Money. Last year when the Hunt Club served notice that it was to hold a vHoree Show, there was doubt In the minds of many that It would be successful. It was not from a financial point for the Hunt Club, but It was as a show. This year the club will not make any money, perhaps not more than Just enough to pay ex penses, but as was the case last year, the show, as a Horse Show, 1b one great success. It has proven that Portland's prominent people can get, and within a year, as handsome horseflesh and equi pages as are seen In any show ring in this or any other country. Nothing now save a disaster of some sort can mar lis success and the splendid display and the perfect management of the show Is due to the earnest and untiring efforts of the officers of the Hunt Club and Its members, who have for months devoted their time to It at the cost of their own interests. Nothing anywhere could have been grander to see than the high Jumping of Fox Catcher and when Mr. Farrell's big Irish hunter cleared the bars at 6 feet 4 Inches, the vast audience present ap plauded the effort for fully five minutes. Fox Catcher certainly won the hearts of the Portland public and no better horse manship could have been seen anywhere than that of Jockey Harris. Mr. Farrell ateo came in for congratu lations and he was Justly proud of Fox Catcher's performance. Frank, Otto Freyman's honse, ridden by William Waiters, also fenced nicely, but he Is not In the Irishman's class as a hiirh jumper. High School Drill Good. The high school drill was a fine exhi bition of riding and hteh school drill. It as the last of the lengthy programme, hut by no means the least Important. There were 16 riders In the class, all well mounted. The ladies and gentlemen who rode and their mounts were: Miss Belie Alnsworth on Mowitza. Ml Mabel Lawrence on Sunday Mark, Miss Carrie Flanders on Roy. Miss Eva Kiernan on Tony, Miss Kate Gile on Cricket. Miss A M. Cronin on Brus sells, Mrs. James Nicol on The Duchess. Mrs. F. G. Buffum on Hlg Bear. R. H. Jenkins on Jane. Kugene Op penhelmer on Gibson Boy, Thomas rVott Brooke on Joe Jewett, William Walters on Blackie. Dr. William Wood on Snap. Joe Cronin on Rattler, E. T. Chase on Jullthia. R. B. Lambson on Topsy. Prizes for Draft Horses. The evening programme opened with horses used in business, both In the delivery service and in the heavy teaming, and they shared honors with the artistocratlo equlnes used for pleasure and display. The class of single delivery wagons, those used dally on the city Btreets. was a nice showing. but the exhibition that caught the fancy of the audience was the handsome four-ln-hand heavy draft horses. When these appeared in the ring last night, with manes and tails gorgeously decorated and mov ing with stately, ponderous tread, they caught the admiring eyes of the audi ence as quickly as did the high-stepping cocky horses used for pleasure. The blue for the heavy four-in-hands went to the four big bays owned by the Holman Transfer Company and the four that has hauled to many door steps the fuel that is burned, owned by the Portland Slabwood Company was second. The Welnhard Brewery Company's four was third, and Dris coll Comer's four was fourth. Mrs. Oonsidine Help Show. Mrs. J. W. Considine, whose entries have done much to add interest to the show, not only by the handsome horses she add her son have shown, but by her driving as well, woo the blue In the tandem class, with Sunshine and Belle Brandon. During the exhibition in the ring the team was In difficulty several times, because the traces on the leader were too long, but Vn spite of this they won over Mr. Farrell's The Premier and Merry Widow. J. 3. Crane added another ribbon to his col lection, when Halite C. won the blue In the class for trotters. The red went to D. E. Frederick's Helen. The judges had IS entries to Judge In the ladles saddle class, but In keep ing with the exceedingly fine work of Mr. Hobart and Mr. Bey lard, the blue ribbon was properly placed. It went to Iva J., owned by K a Jenkins, and ridden by Miss Belle Alnswortb, Duchess, owned by M. I Holbrook, and ridden by James NicoL won the red, and Oregon Boy. owned and ridden by Miss Sally J. Lead better, was awarded the yellow. Jack o' Diamonds, owned by Mrs. C. H. Lewis and ridden by Mrs. A. A. Cronin, won the white. Miss Sally J. Leadbetter, driving Lady Tuck, owned by Mrs. F. W. Leadbetter. also won the blue ribbon In the class for phaetons driven by a lady. Mrs. J. W. Considine also added to her collection of blue ribbons with Sunshine and Belle Brandon In the class for pairs to be shown to a lady's phaeton. Beylard Drives Four-ln-Hand. Only one four-ln-hand was shown In class X. but In spite of this, the audlenoe was vastly Interested in this event be cause Mr. Beylard, who Is without ques tion one of the best whips In the country, took the box and drove. The four was F. W. Leadbetter's Lady Tuck. Lord Nip, Monte ' Chrlsto and Bessie L, and Mr. Beylard gave an exhibition of handling fours that but few in the city have ever witnessed. It Is no wonder that Mr. Beylard received the continued applause of the audience and the cheering from the men who knew, who were in the background. The sporting tandem was something new and novel for Portland. There were three enters In this class, which called for hunters in the lead of the teems. E. M. Loxarus, whose tandem was the sportiest, with the clever driving of his tandem team and his jumping , of Juan Balardo. won the blue. The red went to F. W. Leadbetter. Mr. Lead better's driving was far from hts usual form and several times he was In diftl culty with his leader. Monte Chrlsto; neither did he make Monte Chrlsto take his fences as he should have. The yellow went to T. T. Strain, who drove well and who fenced beautifully with Anti pope. Ponies Refuse Hurdles. In the children's pony class, under saddle, the blue went to Master J. W. Considlne's Quality Queen. Buster re ceived the yellow and Bonnie, ridden bv Miss Margaret Kerr, the red. The white ribbon decorated Bob, owned and ridden by Master George T. Willett. The hurdle-Jumping, by members of the Juvenile Hunt Club, was a keen dis appointment to the youngsters, who tried their ponies over the Jumps in vain. In spite of the refusal of sev eral of the ponies to take the Jumpsthe. spectators were full of ad miration for the pluck and daring shown by the little riders. In this class . v. kIi.a vant tn Flatv owned and jumped by Master Don Tarpley. Apache J5I11, owned ana naaen vy jihsici . A. Daniels, received the red, the yellow aiv n Tninmv lumned hv Master Leo Baruh and the white to Brownie, ridden by Master Kicnara v urnou Miss Leadbetter Gets Two Bines. Mrs. F. W. Leadbetter's handsome pair of blacks, driven by Miss Sally J. Leadbetter, won the blue ribbon In the class for the best pair to be driven by ladles. Pitted against Mrs. Leadbetter's pair was Lady Arva and Lord Nelson, driven by Miss Bernice Baker, of Ta coma. The blue went to Mrs. Leadbet ter's Lady Tuck and Lord Nip. There was only one entry In class 30, for a horse driven to a rumble phaeton, and -the blue was awarded to Mrs. F. W. Leadbetter's Lady Tuck, also driven Dy Miss Sally J. Leadbetter. The speed class for pacers brought four speed marvels together, and Paul Wesslnger's Hal B. won the blue over his famous black mare Alta Cora. The red ribbon in this class went to Crocket, owned by A. L. Powell, and the yellow to Alta Cora. Lizzy C, owned by Frank J. Richardson, was awarded the white. Children's Events in Afternoon. The afternoon programme contained several events in which children ex hibited their ponies, both under sad dle and In harness, but It was under the saddle that the kiddles excelled, and once more the proud boast was made good that the City of Portland had more children riders and better riders than any other city in the United States. Even the judgea, who both have had world-wide experience at horse shows, both at home and abroad, were agree ably surprised at the class of 19 little riders, all of them riding and control lng their mounts In masterly fashion, and with a confidence rarely found even In grown-ups. It was a class that quickly caught the spectators and the applause which they received as they paraded around the ring must have pleased them mightily. The first class to be judged was the pony-driving class. Miss Helen Wads worth Farrell. driving her toppy little horse Clover, won the blue, and the red went to little Miss Mercle Knight's Millie Skewbald. The real surprise of the afternoon, however, came when the horses suit able for cavalry purposes were Judged and Wallace L., owned by J. W. Porter, of Vancouver, Wash., won the blue rib bon over Joe Jewett, owned by Scott Brooke, who won blue ribbons both at Seattle and Portland last year In this same class, at which, of course, Wallace "U was not shown. Mrs. J. W. Considine, driving her high-stepping chustnut mare. Sunshine, was given the blue ribbon in the gig class. Miss Farrell, driving Merry Widow, received the red and Miss Baker with Lady Arva, received the yellow. RKSVI.TS AT AFTERNOON FROGRASDU CIam 78. Ponies undr 12 hands 1 inches -Clover, gr. r . INFORMALITY IN BOXES Pleasant Comradeship at Pro grammes of Premier Society ETent Beautiful Jewels and Charming Women in Boxes. Equally as brilliant as the opening per formance was the Horse Show last nieht. There was decidedly more infor mality apparent while promenading and visiting in the boxes was general. Handsome gowns. Jewels and furs were In evidence and the whole affair was marked by an easy friendliness that Is a decided advance over anything in the line of comradeship that has been known here. The attendance on the part of the smart set was in excess of even the opening performance. More of the box-holders were In evidence at yesterday's perfor mances than at the opening night, which Is considered quite remarkable consider ing that the horse show Is still something of a novelty.' As a social event the show has realised the most sanguine hopes of its promoters and there is no reason why this should not be a regularly established annual event for certainly local society has dem onstrated Its ability to rise to the occa sion and make as much of It as could be expected in any community.
