Convention in Taylor-Street Church Considered Best Ever Held by Oregon White Ribboners. The convention of the Women's Chris tian Temperance I'nion of Oregon which has been In session for the past four days in the Taylor Street Methodist Church, held its final meeting last night. This year's convention Is considered by the temperance leaders one of the largest and most successful in the history of the organisation. At the election held at the afternoon session all of the state officers were re elected, with the exception of the vice president. Mrs. Helen D. Harford, of Newberg. being chosen to All that office. Sirs. Kva Wheeler, of Cottage Grove, was also elected to the ofnee of secre tary of the "Y" fnion. The remainder of the afternoon was de voted to the. reading of reports and the securing of pledges for funds for the coming year. At the conclusion of the memorial service, conducted by Mrs. Eva C. Wheeler, a report was rendered by Mrs. 1a H. Additon on the World's Tem perance Congress, held at Boston, which the attended as delegate from Oregon. The reports rendered by the finance and membership committees showed grati fying results in those departments. A resolution was passed declaring that the reforms recently Inaugurated by Mayor Lne are strongly indorsed by the Union. nd that it opposes the colonisation of vice in any form. The Union also ex pressed Its regret that the station of the Salem electric line contains three sa loons, thus making It an obnoxious place, thsy consider, for the women and children Who patronise the road. The closing session of the convention last night was devoted to the diamond medal contest, awarded by the W. C. T. U. for the best declamation, the ora tions dealing with the question of tem perance. This medal was awarded to D. L Morgan, of Eugene. A musical pro gramme was a feature of the evening's entertainment. SUNDAY LAW NOT IN FORCE IXJCXCTIOX AGAIXST POLICE STILL EFFECTIVE. Judge Gantenbeln Will Pass Mon day on Suit for Permanent Order to Prevent Arrests. Dealers In cigars, confections and oth er edibles may keep open tomorrow with out the danger of arrest on account of violating the Sunday lid law, as Judge Gantenbeln still has the injunction case against the District Attorney under advisement, and the order restraining the ff Icial from making arrests of those who violate this statute Is still in force. Judge Gantenbeln will render a decision on the constitutionality of the law Mon day morning. The District Attorney's brief in the case was not submitted until Thursday afternoon, as his office is very busy prosecuting the Martin case and others. Judge Gantenbeln has not yet had an op portunity to examine the large number or authorities cited by Attorneys Logan. Brlstol and Gleason, as his week's work has been heavy. Should Judge Gantenbeln decide, after a thorough examination of the law. that It is unconstitutional, and that the tem porary Injunction already issued against the District Attorney and the police force should be made permanent. It will mean not only that the cigar, delica tessen and confectionery stores may open on Sunday, but that any grocery store which sees fit. and In fact any kind of store, may transact business on Sunday as on any other day of the week. When the injunction case is decided arguments on the demurrer to the Sun day closing Indictments returned by the grand Jury will be heard by the court, and will be passed upon In accordance with the ruling In the case now under advisement.
