Three hundred season tickets to the biff show of next year were subscribed yesterday by patriotic Portlanders. These represent a start of $1500 to the proposed guarantee fund which Is to be raised to assure the success of next year meet, especially in the attend ance of Portland people. An gratify. na: to the directors as the subscriptions for season tickets were the letters accompanying' them, ex pressing approval of the annual race meet and livestock exhibition. Most of the letters and subscriptions re ceived up to this time are, of course, from Portland, for the plan to raise this guarantee fund was only an nounced Sunday morning1. Several from other sections of the state and from neighboring states, however, have already been received and many more re expected within a day or so. The plan to raise the guarantee fund provides for the sale of ZQ.tQ season tickets, which may be transferred to any one besides the purchaser in case he should not desire to use them him self. The number was considered con servative, though many members of the committees who are disposing' of them believe that the total sales will reach 4000 or 50uu. Especial efforts will be made to in terest the women of Portland and of Oregon In the new plan. It is they, members of the committee argue, who ran make the plan a huge success If they become Interested. A season ticket for the six days of the meet is to be sold for to. according- to the new plan, and the sum need not necessarily be paid when the subscription Is made. It Is believed that the women of the city and s.ate aione will be able to dispose of the desired number of tick ets undfr these conditions if they once become interested In the Importance of the pacific National Show. Letters inclosing subscriptions for tickets which have been received by The Oregonian follow: COMMENDS GREAT WORK DOXE E. X. Hutchinson Suggests Also That More Slock Be Sold. The board of directors of the Country Club yesterday received the following letter from Ir. E. X. Hutchinson, a well-known .livestock authority: Portland. Sept. 2. To the Board of Directors. Portland Countrr Cub Gentlemen: As a small rtockhol.ier It has seemed to me that I would like to express my appreciation of the excellent way In which you have accomplished a vaat amount ef work this Hummer at our g spun da, and of the rem ark abbe demonstration that you made in that livestock parade, which was a beautiful addition to the finest livestock ex hibition It was ever my lot to see. I wonder if you yourselves realise that Oregon, as a atau. was represented there with more breed of cattle than were shown at tT-e Chicago Internationa;. 1 note, though with some regret, that a rather pessimistic spirit seems to have cropped up on account of what Is called a poor attendance. I don't really think myself that Portland City turned out as she could have done, but k-t us not allow that to be In the least dis couraging. I stood Just at the top of the grandstand one afternoon when the people were entering freely, and if you could have beard the expressions of rhapsody over the magnificent view that was thus given them with the first sight of the track, you would bar wished your presont meeting could have been extended over at leawt another week, and have received abundant assur anoes of future attendanoe. I not also from the public press that you are about to start a campaign to insure future attendance by opening a subscription list for the advance sale of season tickets, thus giving a H ticket for .V There le no doubt that these will meet with a big sale, but why not reopen the stock subscription list? After the demonstration you gave last week I am for myself convinced that this stock is going to be a big dividend payer, and personally at thij time I would rather buy one more share of stock with $100 than to buy r0 additional tickets for next season's attractions, and with that end In view I shall have the pleasure of calling on you tn a few days. Tours very respectfully. E. X. HUTCHINSON" Subscribes With Pleasure. PORTLAND, Or.. Sept. 28. To The Oregon Ian. I herewith inclose subscrip tion for season tickets for the next meeting of the Portland Country Club and Livestock Association, and do it with exceeding pleas ure, because I heartily concur In the cam paign that you are making to Insure that the 1 909 meeting will be a great success. There is no other one enterprise before the people of this city that deserves so much actual encouragement and encouragement of the right sort, as the officials of this asso ciation have placed Portland on the map as a Ilwstock center and if the citizens neglect to show their practical appreciation they are recreant to their civic duties. The plan you have adopted should he an Inducement for every loyal Portland eJtien to add his mite towards building up our city. Respectfully, CHARLES. B. MERRICK. Believing that the livestock show is worth every possihle encouragement I take pleasure In subscribing to ten season tickets for 1909. Name. Address. I visited the exhibits and the races the first day. and they far excelled anything that 1 had anticipated, and this is the expression that I heard from many of those who at tended. There Is no doubt, when the public becomes educated up to what the Country Club has to offer, that there will be no lack of support. Those gentlemen, who have spent so much time and money In this worth v enterprise should not be lacking of encouragement. I take pleasure In sub scribing for ten tickets and will use my ef forts to promote the best results for 1909. Yours very truly. M. I. KLINE. S-s6 Front Street. Opportunity Privilege PORTLAND. Or.. Sept. 28. (To Th Oregonian.) The Haxelwood Cream Com pany takos pleasure in subscribing for 20 tickets to the Pacific National IJvestock Show. 1909. because we consider the oppor tunity of helping next year's show a privi lege. This Is one of the things that must be made a success, and certainly from all appearances. excepting attendance. this year It was a success. We believe there was not a person who attended but felt welt repaid for the going; but. outside of the pleasure and profit obteined from attending the show, the Incentive given to the farm ers and breeders of the entire Northwest, and especially the State of Oregon, to breed better livestock, thus Increasing the value of their land by making same return greater profits. Is of Inestimable value to every per son living in Oregon. We believe, of all the enterprises started, this Pacific National Hhow will do more to build up the livestock Interests of this state than any other one thing: and. when you consider the enormous value of tl livestock, dairy and poultry products, it certainly behoove the City of Portland to do everything In Its power to build up these Industries. Very truly yours. HAZELffOOD CREAM CO.. By Q. M. Brown, President Dr. Broogher Approves PORTLAND. Or., Sept. 28. (To The Oregonian.) I notice In this morning's paper announcement of the Inaugura tion of the campaign to Interest the people of Portland in the Country Club a Livestock Show for September. 1908. I attended the show this year and was more than pleased with the entire display.. The stock exhibition waa an education In Itself, and was worth ton times the price of ad mission to anyone Interested In fine horses and fine cattle. I saw some of the races, and to my mind the conditions could not have been better. There was no public gambling, and the people all about me seemed to be refined and cultuited. and X did not hear a solitary private wager made duntng the time I was there. If there was any place to buy Intoxicating liquors on the grounds. I did not see it. I am writing this word of commendation because I want to urge the people of Portland to support an association that ran give such a clean and wholesome exhibition. If the Country Club and Livestock Asociation can rise above the greed for money enough to cut out all gambling and prohibit the sale of liquor on the ground and furnish us an other clean, wholesome exhibition next year, thev ought to have the hearty co-operation of all the people of Portland. Please put me down for one season ticket for next year. Tours very sincerely, J. WHITCOMB BROUGHER. Dairymen Are Enthusiastic PORTLAND. Or., Sept. 28. (To The Oregonian.) I enclose subscription blanks covering season tickets for President F. L. Kent, of the Oregon Slate Dairy Association and mvself. to the 1909 Pacific National Show. In accordance with the splendid plan undertaken by The Oregonian to Insure the success of next year s event. In the op nlon of Oregon dairymen the exhibit just closed surpassed any showing ever made In the Pacific Northwest, and this does not except the Lewis and Clark display, which was so forceful a factor In the almost incredltable increase shown by tire dairy industry from a th O00.000 output five years ago to 17. 000 000 In 1907. Dairying means more to Portland than any other Industry. I'to5 from the Pacific Northwest is proving Its superiority In every exhibit In which It par ticipates. The tremendous increase in values of property in Eastern cities situated near great packing companies stands as a warning against delay in investing in SWINTON.
