PENDLETON. Or., Aug. 31. When wheat went to 80 cents In the markets here a minth ago. trading was sharp and much of the staple changed hands. Sine that time, however, with the price ranging from 75 to SO cents a bushel, there has been a disposition among the farmers to hold their crops for a time and watch the mar ket. There Is a strong belief here that the price will again reach 80 cents, and many of those well situated financially are hold ing for tha higher price. PORTLAND MARKETS. Grain, Flonr. Feed, Eta. BULLS Ifi CONTROL But Use Their Power in Stock Market Moderately. DAY'S NET CHANGES SMALL Strength Shown Mostly In Indus trials Except Southern Pacific, Railroad 1. 1st Is Slow. Bonds Are Strong. NEW YORK, Aug. 81. Tho bull party easily demonstrated Its control of the market again today, but It showed a disposition to uee It power with moderation. There waa a fair degree of realising conducted at various times during the day, especially during the execution of buying orders at the outaet by commlsslson houses, representing the accumu istion of business of the past week. Tha punishment dealt to the bears last- week and the Important feature of the stock exchanga house short of the market was not lost sight of and served as a continuing Influence of Intimidation against operations on tha short side of the market. The continued redundancy of tho local money market Is all that prevents our strong control of International exchange from becom lng operative. Beetdeo the unusual excess of merchandise exports from this country, which is computed as probably $400,000,000 for tha seven months Including August, tha usual Summer borrowings of the Xew York market abroad have been on an unusually light scale, owing to tha liberal supply of money In the home market. No doubt la felt that a rise in Interest rates by reason of Interior with' drawals either for crop movement or increased business activity, or Indeed for a speculative employment of funds would draw gold from Europe up to the point' where interest rates would rise to a level attractive enough to turn the tide of the movement again. Tha day's strength was shown mostly in tha industrial specialties, including the cop per group and the New York publlo utilities. The railroad list was Inclined to lag In spite of the leadership of tha Harrlma.l Pacifies. Southern Pacific raised its high record prlea again. United States Eteel preferred, at 1124, sold practically at a record price, since the dividend of 14 por cent was deducted this morning. This stock sold at 113 in January of 1&06. The day's net changes were small. Bonds wera strong. The special strength of Japanese bond was due to the adoption of retrenchment measures by the imperial Japan ese government. CHICAGO MARKET STRONG Cash Premiums Are Steady and Of ferings From Interior Are Small Record Price for December Corn. CHICAGO, Aug. 81. Ti-.i wheat market waa strcig all day with ths exception of a slight decline at the start, due to liberal receipts In the Northwest and to bearish weekly statistics. The heavy movement in the Northwest had little effect, Inasmuch as lt was claimed that aH the newly ar rived grain was eagerly taken by mills and elevators at tha same premiums as prrvlous' ly. One of the main reasons for the strength was the purchase of about 1.000. 000 bushels of September wheat by a lead ing elevator Interest which led many traders to believe that deliveries on September con tracts tomorrow were likely to go Into strong hands. Another factor that was held to cause the advance was a decrease of 542,000 bushels In the visible supply of wneat in the cnited states and Canada. Cash premiums here were steady and offer ings from the Interior wera very small. The corn market was weak early in the aay. tne greatest weakness being man! fested In the September delivery, which declined one cent on liberal profit-taking. The market rallied sharply on an official prediction of frost tonight In Nebraska and &oum Dakota. The December option made a new high record for - the season, selling at G754c The market closed strong and near tne top at net gains of 54 c to 154 4C. Oats wers quiet and easy during the first part or the day but later trading became more active. The market closed firm with gains of MSj54e to 54 fi Sc.
