INVESTORS ARE CAUTIOUS Values of Leading Issues Have Not Been Arrected by Exciting Occurrences of Past Fortnight. NEW YORK, Aug. 26. Disappointment was the portion of those who thought that todays stork market would show some fur ther reflection of the early week's turbu lence. As a matter of fact, the day s busi ness was almost the dullest for some weeks and nearly the rmollest of any full day this year. Trading the first hour was under 63.000 shares and In the following hour less than 8S.00O shares changed hands, while throughout the afternoon there were fre quent periods of complete stagnation. The suspension of A. O. Brown Co. Is still shrouded In considerable mystery, but the stock exchange euthorltlea are earnest In their premise to sift the majter to the bottom. Some uneasiness was felt at the outset of today's operations, but re assuring advices from official sources soon Imparted a firm tone to the list. The speculative faction Is disinclined, for a var iety of reasons, to make fresh ventures just now. and this attitude Is quite certain to be maintained until there Is a better understanding of recent events Caution Is being manifested by investors and It is con ceded that no business need be expected from that element for some time to come. The greater ease of money will be a favorable factor In straightening out any trouble that may have resulted from the recent spectacular market operations. A point tending to prove the Inherent strength of underlying conditions Is found in the fact that while the past fortnight has been one of the most memorable In the history of tho local stock exchange, the average prices of the 20 leading railway Issues show practically no change. The afternoon session brought little or no change, but under the lead of Southern Pacific, which reached a new high level at 101 H- the entir. list hardened and closed strong. Americans held firm in London, where there was evidence of bear opera tions for New York account. The day's grist of general news was discouraging for most part with further conflicting reports as to the state of trade. Inquiry for copper metal Is slight and a break in tin was re ported from London. No change is noted In local monetary conditions. The demand Is lighter than at any time this month. Bonds were steady, the only feature being the sale of a large block of Union Pacific refunding 4's at a figure slightly under the subscription price. Total sales of bonds, par value, $2,822,001. United States bonds were unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing Sale?. 18.600 High. Low. BM. Amal Copper .... Am Car A Foun. do preferred . . . Am Cotton Oil.. Am Bl ft Lt p(. Potatoes Firmer on Prospects ol Light Crop Rush Export Salmon Order. SEATTLE. Wash., Aug. 20. (Special.) The market Is swamped with water melons. Receipts have been so heavy for the last few days that the trade cannot absorb them fast enough. Good melons are selling as low as 1 cent, although as high as 1 cents is still asked, for the best. For the first time this season the cantaloupe supply apprtaches the demand. Prices have been forced down until the top Is now 81.50. The quality of the fruit is better than It has been here tofore this season. Peaches are not coming forward as briskly as anticipated. Potatoes are firmer. Advices gathered by commission men are that the crop Is not as heavy as anticipated. The potatoes are not only not yielding as heavily in the po tato districts of the White River Valley, but they are small. All lndlcatlona are that the crop will be considerably less than last sea son. The 35-cent quotation on eggs meets some objection, and many sales were made today on a 34-cent basis. Wheat was unchanged. The tone was firmer, perhaps, than yesterday. Ninety-three cents was asked for bluestem, but there were no bidders. . An order has been received here by a brokerage house for 8000 cases of salmon for immediate shipment by express to England. The Bsh will be hurried to the Atlantic Coast as rapidly as possible. PURE FOOD LAV NOT BAR Imports From France Are Increased Under Its Operation. WASHINGTON, Aug. 26. The United States pure food law. instead ot hamper ing foreign trade, has benefited it, and seems to have carried with it a greater re spect for foreign labels, is the opinion ex pressed by the United States Consul, Dominic I. Murphy, at Bordeaux, France, former Commissioner of Pensions, in a report on French exports to the United States. Consul Murphy says the records of the Bordeaux Consulate, one of the first places which would naturally feel the effects of changed conditions, show that the declared values of exports of French foods and food products to the United States during the tirst year of the operation of the pure food law actually increased. The value of alimentary re past, including macaroni, increased al mOEt $47,000 during 1907 as compared with 1906- Jams and Jellies increased 119,921. olive oil J63.753, preserved fruits $34,708. preserved vegetables $53,132, still wines $96,789. and sparkling wines $5909. Other articles classed as foods showed decreased exportation, but the decrease in almost every item may be properly accounted for without reference to the pure food law, says the Consul. Exports of brandy fell off $11,2P5. but the records show a much greater falling off In 1906 compared with 1905. The de crease in preserved fish was consid ered as due solely to the practical failure of the sardine fisheries, the packers here have beer, utterly unable to supply a hundredth part of their American orders. As for liquors, the slight decrease is due to the provision of the pure food law forbidding the use of certain coloring matters, and the difficulty was in finding proper substitutes.
