MILK STANDARD IS R OREGON OPPOSES PLAN OF DAIRY COXFEREXCE. Commercial Bodie Advised That Gathering Has Xo Power to Fix Arbitrary Rule. The published report that the Pure Food nd Dairy Conference, now in ses sion at Mackinac Island. Mich., has un der consideration the adoption of a standard of 28 per cent solids for con densed milk and 7.7 per cent butter fat yesterday brought vigorous protests from the Portland Commercial Club. Oregon Development League and Ore gon State Dairy Association, for the reason that the adoption of such a standard in the matter of solids would prove disastrous to the milk-condensing industry in Oregon. While the conference at Mackinac has no power under its appropriation act to create standards, the fact that it represents 60 per cent of the dairy sections of the country, would seem likely to give it considerable in fluence with the Department of Agri culture in recommending standards. The standard recommended by the conference as regards butter fat can be easily reached by the Faclflo Coast condensers for the reason that the milk produced in this section is known to be very rich; but it does not have the same solids as milk produced in the Middle West, because in that section cows are fed grain and artificial food. In Oregon the climatic conditions and method of feeding make it impossible to reach the proposed standard with re gard to solids. The men Interested in the local milk-condensing plants con tend that the standards should be based on the percentage of butter fat and that there should be no requirement in the matter of percentage of solids. This would be In entire conformity with the pure food laws. It is known that the Oregon condensed milk la preferred to the product of the Mid dle West by consumers in that sec tion and it Is believed the proposed standard may have been devised to in jure local manufacturers. In response to the protests of the Commercial Club and State Dairy As sociation the following telegram was received from Acting Secretary Moore, of the Department of Agriculture: "Any standards adopted by commit tee on food standards at Mackinac are not binding on the Department of Ag riculture and the conference has no power at present under its appropria tion act to create standards." $1.50 SHIRTSAT 49 CENTS .Men's soft front golf shirts, $1.60 grade today at 49c; men's 25c fancy socks, 10c pair; men's 12 negligee shirts, $1.29. Washington-Street Entrance Will Be Done Away AVtih and Other Space Added. Extensive alterations are to'be made In the Failing building at the southeast cor ner of Washington and Third streets. The Marnman lines' city ticket and freight offices are to occupy all the Washington street front with the exception of the room leased to the Scandinavian bank at the eastern end of the building. The alterations Include throwing the Washington-street entrance to the build ing into the "office space, the single en trance to the building hereafter to be from Third street. The barber shop and en trance space on Washington street will enable the city offices to be nearly double the present space occupied, and the big room in the rear of the elevator formerly the city freight office of the companies. Is again to be utilized by them In connec tion with the new plan of uniting the two city departments. Third and Washington has always been the location of the city offices of the old O. R. & N.. and when the consolidation of that company with the other Harriman lines In Oregon was effected the city , ticket office remained in the same loca tion. Before the erection of the Failing building the office was in a frame build ing opposite, and upon the completion of the Failing building it was moved to the corner since occupied. It now becomes necessary to enlarge the quarters, and the alterations outlined will be started at once, it being expected to have the new rooms ready for occupancy by October 1 The Chicago-Northwestern ticket and freight office is to move Into the office now occupied by the olty freight office of the Harriman lines in tne McKay build ing when the new rooms on Washington street are ready. . MATCH STARTS EXPLOSION Engineer at Welser So Badly Scorched Ho Will Iiikely Die. WEISER, Idaho, Aug. 7. (Special.) J. H. Beverly, foreman of the P. & I. N. Hallway roundhouse in this city, was perhaps fatally burned by an ex plosion of gasoline today. He was run ning the gasoline engine at the pump ing plant when the machinery got out of order. He lighted a torch and went into the pit where the machinery is located, when there was an' explosion and he ran out with his clothing In flames. Persons who happened to be present threw him down and extin guished the flames. He was immed iately taken to the hospital. His arms and body were badly burned, the flesh in places being llteraly cooked. Rosenthal's windows are money-savers.
