When the prisoner was searched the police found a complete outfit for use in sneak thlevory, consisting of two revolvers, a box of red pepper, a dagger, two electric liinttfins and a number of vials contain ing slerp-producing potions. The police vuy the young man intimated that it was lo raise funds to enable him to keep up appearances before a certain young wo man that caused him to turn to a ca reer of crime. Levine. registered under another name yesterday and asked to be assigned to a j room near a fire escape. Early today, f Mrs. Mostyn Cookson, who with her hus- Suffolk Regiment, occupied the room ad joining that of Levine, on the fourteenth floor of the hotel, was awakened by a sudden flash of light in her face. A re volver pressed against her forehead kept her silent until her hands had been bound, but as the unwelcome visitor was about to press a gag Into her mouth she screamed. Her husband, who had been sleeping in a bed at the other aider of the room, sprang on Levine before he could turn around and bore him to the floor. The hotel employes and police arrived shortly. When Levine was arraigned in court the managers of several hotels ap peared and told Of robberies in their houses. Major Cookson said the young man had secured jewelry valued at $20ut) in his room before he was captured. Swift justice today overtook Levrae a few hours after his capture, a grand jury returning two indictments against the young man. one for burglary and the other for assault in the first degree. This afternoon he pleaded guilty and was sen tenced to serve not less than 10 or more than 40 years in prison. Investigation shows that Irvine's father is janitor of an apartment house. PAZ, Bolivia, July 9. Further de tails received here of the revolution in Paraguay say that while fighting was going on in Asuncion an Incident occurred' Lwhich might have had a most serious re sult. The American Minister, Edward C. O'Brien, desirous of proffering his good offices in order to prevent further loss of life, while approaching the headquarters of the revolutionists, was fired upon three times by government troops. According to the dispatches, the Minister's escape was miraculous, as many persons were killed in the vicinity. Discovering their mistake the soldiers ceased firing and an officer hastened to give explanations to the Minister, who is convinced that the act was not premedi tated. The new President of Paraguay, Emil ano Naveiro, has been officially recog nized by the majority of the foreign dip lomats. Claims for damages by the for eign legations are heavy. JURORS SUE THE MATIN Ask $20,000 Damages for Libelous Comment on Humbert Verdict. PARIS, July 9. The jury in the Hum bert libel case against the Matin are now suing that journal for J2O.O00 damages on account of the article printed ths day after the trial In, which their verdict was criticised. Senator Humbert sued tho Matin for connecting his name with the swindling operations of one Henri Roch ette and was awarded damages in the sum of $10,000. AVork for a Larger Navy. MASON CITY, Jowa, July 9. James E. Blythe, Owen T. Denison and Daniel W. Telford were appointed as a com mittee suggested by Captain Richard Pearson Hobson In his speech made here July 4. At the close of his Chau tauqua address Hobson urged that this committee at once bring pressure to bear upon the local congressman, and that he be urged to use his influence for a naval programme on a broader gauge than two ships per year.
