TIIJ5 MUKINUM UKKWOJYIAIV, SA1 CTK1J.A. JCTVE 37, 1U08. 13 KEPT FROM BERTHS Further Charges Against Cap tain Babcdck, of Sherman. CHORUS GIRLS FAVORED Three of Tlicm, Also Whisky Drum mer, Said to Have Been Taken . Care Of, While Soldiers Had to Sleep on Heck. Ex-soldlers and many enlisted men are still protesting vigorously against the treatment they received at the hands of Cnptaln Babcock, quartermaster-captain of the transport Sher man, which recently brought a regi ment of infantry from the Philippines to Vancouver barracks. Many of the men had just secured honorable discharges and were return ing home after years of service for the country. Others were still in the service and will be stationed at Van couver until ordered elsewhere. They charge that Captain Babcock favored certain passengers to the great discomfort of themselves. As many as three dozen, It is said by the soldiers, were absolutely denied berths until after the ship had passed Nagasaki. At that point such a pro test was raised that the captain was forced to grant them use of the re maining berths. Those who were un able to secure berths were forced to sleep either upon the deck or In the hold. The transport, it is claimed, Is pri marily for the transportation and ac commodation of soldiers. However, Captain Babcock Is charged with hav ing permitted several civilians to se cure accommodations while soldiers were denied them. Among the num ber was a whisky drummer and three chorus girls from a beer garden in Manila. "I know the three chorus girls," said a resident of Portland last night, who has recently returned from Ma nila. "They are the daughters of an ex-prlze-fighter and were coming to America to go on the stage.' How they ever got passage on a United States transport is more than I know. fTmunllv Trhn nffirprq nf transnnrts permit anything of the kind the pas senger only has to pay $1 a day for his passage. The ordinary fare Is $250. These three girls worked for a long time at Lieve's Orpheum Theater In Manila. They are not even Ameri can citizens, having been born In Aus tralia. But they were given the best of accommodations, while our soldiers were denied them. "Perhaps the actions of Captain Bab cock were white-washed by an alleged investigation, but such white-washing doesn't count for much with the sol diers who know the facts and who suffered the discomforts that were forced upon them." ABERDEEN'S FINE HARBOR Vessels Drawing 24 Feet Can Enter Safely After September 1. , ABERDEEN, Wash., June 26. (Spe cial.) -Engineer Clapp, of Seattle, who Is In the city, states positively that on September 1, next. Grays Harbor will have reached a place among the great harbors of the world, and that many steamships having a displacement of 1 to 26 feet can easily come Into this port. Engineer Clapp says that the meaT! low depth of water September 1 In tha channel from Cosmopolis to the bar wi.' ba 20 feet, and that at high tide It wi'; be 30 feet, and at extreme high tide any where from 80 feet up. The depth of water on the bar at the present time Is 24 feet, and at high tide from 30 to 32 feet, and this depth will bo retained by the building of the Jetty. Even at the present time the Jetty work O far Is keeping the swash of the tide from affecting the water over the bar. Engineer Clapp says the 30-foot chan nel will b the result of the present dredging by the Government. The chan nel la also fully buoyed to Cow Point, and by September 1. or sooner, will be perfectly buoyed to the bar. .BOOKMAKERS SENT TO JAIL Denver Judge Terms His Offense aa Pernicious Gambling. WHAT THE PRESIDENT SI DOIXG THINGS IS WHAT MAKES OCR GREAT MEX AND WOMEN. Then Wake Up and Do Things This Month AVill Be Tour Last Chance to Buy Pianos at Wholesale. "Wo now appeal to the good - people of Portland for the last time. The one chance of your life Is staring you In the face. This la the last day In the month In which you will have an opportunity to take advantage of this big deal of 100 pianos to 100 individual purchasers and get your piano at absolute rock-bottom wholesale cost, saving the entire retail profit of from J136 to 155 on your purchase with two and oae-half years to complete pay ment. This is an unheard-of proposi tion. Just think; you are only paying the price that large dealers pay. If for no other reason you should buy one on a speculation. Another thing, you are practically given one year's trial, and to cap the climax we give you an iron-clad guarantee of satisfaction or money back. Again we say to you that now is your - time to quit thinking and commence doing things. On the first of next month we will move to our wholesale quarters, where we will ship In carload lots to all parts of Ore gon, Washington and Idaho, and from now on will solicit the patronage of dealers In open territory.
