Passenger Department Of Harrlman Lines Prepares to Comply AVlth Law Passed by Electors. As a result of the June election, at which so large a part of the state went dry, officials of the Southern Pacific and O. R. & N. are making: preparations to put on the lid on Southern Pacific and O. R. & X. trains through the dry coun ties. No liquor may be sold on trains while they are passing through the dry counties of the state and passengers wU be obliged to do without whatever In toxicating beverage they specially favor. From Gregory, on the state line to the south, to Jefferson, where the Southern Pacific crosses into Marlon County, the first oasis in this state for north-bound trains. Is about 300 miles, requiring al most a day's run. Through all that dreary waste of country, passengers on trains will not be able to get a drop to drink to assuage their raging thirst. On the O. R. & X. trains it will not be quite as bad, but the drought on that line will be such as to cause thirsty pas sengers to wish they had never entered the state. - Portland-bound. - their last drink after . entering the state may be, taken in Baker County until they reach the friendly soil of Wasco County, where prohibition has not yet taken root. Two big generous counties in the In terior of the - s tate. Lake and Harney, would be a Godsend to thirsty travelers If they were only on the line of the rail roads. Although they cover a good deal of the southern half of the state, they do not help any because the railroads do not touch them. The passenger department of the two Harrlman lines is. preparing toi have printed on the menu , cards In the diners on both lines that drinks cannot be served on board trains while passing through the dry counties. The same plan is followed In the Bast when dry Btates are' crossed by railroads. Passengers avoid the desolating effects of this regu lation, however, by buying a sufficient quantity of wet goods before the lid Is clapped on to last them until the train rolls into a state where the saloons have not yet been banished and the blanket of prohibition spread over the state. The railroads cannot do otherwise than comply with the law In regard to selling liquor In dry territory and the passengers must abide by the restrictions. 'As the new regulation goes into effect throughout the Oregon counties, which voted themselves dry, on July 1, plans are now being made by the railroads to- prevent liquor being served on board trains while pass ing through the dry counties after that date." Measure to Be Presented to Legisla ture May Also Prohibit Discrim ination Against Union Men. A bill for an employers' liability law will be presented to the Oregon Legis lature next Winter by the trades unions of this city. Organized labor Is now having the proposed bill drafted by C. E. S. Wood, of this city, and the In fluence of the -combined labov unions of the state will be brought to secure its favorable consideration by the law makers." i Trades unionists have for some time complained that the laborer is not af forded adequate protection under the laws of the state and they propose, by the enactment of the bill they are having drafted, to provide that pro tection. While the point has not been decided finally. It is possible a provi sion will be incorporated In the meas ure by which employers will be pro hibited from making any discrimina tion against union men. It is charged by organized labor that, under the present system many of the large em ployers of labor refuse absolutely to employ men that are affiliated or are In sympathy with labor unions. In this respect it is intended to make the bill similar to the laws of several other states, where it Is made a penitentiary offense for employers, to make the Joining' or withdrawal from any or ganization a condition of employment. Such conditions are objected to by the representatives of the labor organiza tions on the ground that they .are an unwarranted restriction of Individual rights. Dan S. Campbell.
