Steel, Brick and Concrete Structure to Be Put Up on Irving Street, Near Thirteeenth. Excavation starts today on the site on Irving street between Thirteenth and Fourteenth, which was secured some time ago by the Crane Company for Its new warehouse. The contvact was awarded yesterday to C. J. Cook & Co., by the architect, "W. C Knighton, who is completing the plans for the structure and who will have charge of the work until the building is finished. . The ground is 100x200, and on one half of this a six-story structure Is to be erected and on the rest a two-story building. There Is to be a full base ment under the entire building, which is to be of steel beams, cast-iron col umns and brick walls. The floors are to be of reinforced concrete, thus mak ing the big warehouse a strictly Ciass A fireproof building. Plans will not be ready for about three weeks for the letting of the general contract, or until the excavation is finished. The Crane Company now occupies the building at 30-34 Second street, and as the goods handled by the concern con sist of . plumbers' and steam-fitters' supplies and other heavy articles, it is necessary to have a warehouse of un usual strength. This Important build ing will make another notable addition to the warehouse district, which is rap Idly assuming proportions that will shortly make, of It the center of the wholesale business of the city. The cost of the building will not be an nounced until the plans are finally passed upon. The better sites in the southern end of the city are also attracting much at tention, and a sale consummated by D. B. Mackie yesterday carries out pre dictions that the district is rapidly as suming a place in the business sections of the city, or rather that the congested condition further north is pushing busi ness southward. Mr.- Mackin sold for Emanuel May the lot, 60x100, at the northeast corner of First and Main streets, to Giuseppl Corgehnlo for $63,000. The former owner held the property for some months and is said to have purchased it for about $50,000. Washington Raises More Wheat. PORTLAND, June 11. (To the Editor.) To settle an argument will you publish in the columns of your paper which state of the "two, either Oregon or Washington, raises the most wheat? WM, J. HICKET. M 'ALLEN FOR CELEBRATION DOES NOT APPROVE OF IDEA OP QUIET FOURTH. Advocates Calling: of Committee ot Citizens to Canvass for Funds. Position of Mayor. "Are we to have a Fourth of July celebration?" fairly. yelled Dan McAllen when asked what arrangements are being made for observing the Nation's birthday. "Why, man, any American who suggests anything else is not worthy the name. Of course we shall have a celebration. Firecrackers, flags, speeches. Declaration of Independence, brass bands playing the good old pat riotic tunes, kids out in red, white and blue ribbons, zizz-boom fireworks at night. 'My Country, 'Tis of Thee,' and hurrah for Yankee Doodle, you know." Mr. McAllen. went on to explain that all that is necessary is for the Mayor to call a meeting of citizens to meet in the Council Chamber, as was done last year, organize committees, and in a day or two the thing's done. He disapproves the idea of allowing the day to pass without some celebration; it may be that the day's programme cannot be as elaborate as that of last year, but he said that when Mayor Lane gives the word the patriotic people will at once and with enthusiasm carry out whatever plans are agreed upon. The general committee of last year had the following officers: General O. Summers, president: H. H. Newhall, vice-president A. B. Steinbach, treas urer; Lee M. Clark, secretary, and F. D. Nlcklin,- assistant - secretary. The sub-committees were on auditing, in vitation, advertising and printing, pa rade, music, literary, amusements and outdoor sports, decoration, transporta tion, automobiles, fireworks and recep tion. When Mayor, Lane was asked if he Intended to take the initiative in hav ing a celebration this year, he replied that to the best of his. recollection a committee of citizens called upon htm last year and discussed plans, and In vited him to make the opening address at the literary exercises. He said if a celebration is to be given on the com ing Fourth, no doubt Mr. Allen or some other merchant would start the movement by issuing a call for a meet ing of those who would be willing to undertake the work of organization. He Intimated that it is hardly a part of his official duty to make municipal mat ter of the affair, as action by the Coun cil would ba necessary to bring it up to him in his official capacity. tect, were in part heard yesterday after noon by the fire committee of the execu tive board, and will be concluded at a special meeting to be held later. Mr. Williams alleges discrimination, and says the inspector makes arbitrary rulings on the building ordinance, and permits vio lations of the law. McAllen & Mc Donnell, the good goods store. Third and Morrison. Hood River Strawberry Festival and Excursion Postponed. Word comes from Hood River that the unusually warm weather which has pre vailed this week has precipitated a most unusual condition In the strawberry in dustry. The berries have ripened so rap idly that it has been necessary to sum mon almost every man, woman and child in the community to harvest and pack the crop to keep from losing it,. so that they cannot possibly do Justice to the en tertainment of visitors. The special train excursion advertised for next Saturday has therefore been Indefinitely postponed.
