Nose Broken in Accident. "William
Johnson, a young man employed as a
driver by the Portland Electric Light
Company, met with a strange and ex
tremely painful accident yesterday after
noon in the yards of the company's plant.
Johnson was unloading wood from a
wagon operated by an automatic unload
ing device which is turned by an iron
crank. While turning the crank handle,
it flew out of his hand and the great
weight of the loaded wagon bed pressing
down on '.he mechanism sent it back
ward with terrific force. It struck John
son in the face, breaking his nose
and other bones and frightfully
disfiguring him. Bleeding and uncon
scious he was carried to the Good
Samaritan Hospital, where it was an
nounced that, although in a serious con
dition, he probably would not die from his
injuries.
Causes Neighbor's Arrest. Joe Ver
ando. an Italian, and) Carl Schachinger,
a German, are neighbors on the Patton
Road where they both rent from the
same landlord. Last night Schachinger
had Verando arrested as a result of a
neighbor's quarrel. The landlord although
having securely fenced his property,
provided but one gate for the two
houses and this gate directly in front of
Verando's door. The German family
always has used this gate, having no
other alternative save climbing the fence,
to which the women objected. Verando
has frequently objected to the use of this
gate save by his own family and this con
tention culminated yesterday in the inter
change of back-door compliments and a
warrant' for the Italian's arrest.

but his condition grew so much worse
yesterday morning that his physician had
him removed to this city and to a private
room In the hospital. Mr. Millett is well
known throughout Washington and has
many friends in this city.

PLAY TO MUSIC STUDENTS
Artists of Xew York Orchestra
Please Large Audience.
The New York Symphony Orchestra,
under the distinguished leadership of
Walter Damrosch, is already nearing
Portland, having reached San Francisco
last Sunday and opening there to a tre
mendous throng of people on Sunday
afternoon. But it was in Los Angeles
that one of the most inspiring sights of
the tour took place. Mr. Damrosch
has played to many thousands of peo
ple, but the matinee in Los Angeles to
the music students, and young lovers of
the beautiful, was given to an audience
numbering exactly 5997. "A most wonder
ful sight, indeed a wonderfully inspiring
one," wrote Mr. Damrosch, "and one
which I shall never forget. They sat as
if entranced, as I hope and believe they
were, and their eager, happy faces still
smile at me in memory."
The three concerts to be given in Port
land will open Wednesday night, June 3,
at the Armory, and will be followed by
a Thursday matinee and close with a
Thursday night performance. The tour
is under the direction of Lois Steerg
"VVynn Coman, who have announced that
as soon as the programmes, which will
contain the analytical notes, are off the
press, they will be given to the public.
