J THE MORNING OREGONIAX. THURSDAY, MAY 14, 1908. 17 E IS INDORSED Collection' of Produce Statis tics Favored by the Trade. GOOD WORK OF EXCHANGE Posting of Dally Receipts Fills a long-Felt Want in Produce Dis trict Attendance Best Since Organization Waa Started. Ths Board of Trade took a step In the right direction when it inaugurated the col lection of statistics bearing on local produce receipts. The I-Yoduce Merchant? Asso ciation, at lta monthly meeting, gave Its hearty Indorsement of the move. The publi cation of the!e statistics is of vital impor tance to the trade, as, without them, It Is almost Impossible to establish prices that accurately represent' market conditions. This feature has stimulated renewed interest in the exchange on the part of the produce dealers and at the Front-street meeting It was .decided that, beginning next Monday, each house would be represented at the daily calls. Yesterday's session was the beat attended tf any since the Board began business t.id most of the nembers of the local grain trails were on hand. Among the out-of-town vis itors were W. H. Houck of the Houck Mill ing Company, of McMlnnvllle. one at the best known flour millers in the Valley; Y. L. Macgregor, of Balfour, Guthrie & Co., San Francisco; O. H. Morgan, of the Globe Mills, Los Angeles, and J. E. Holllngsworth. f Lob Angeles, who Is preparing to go Into the fruitgrowing business in this state. Offers and sales were posted as follows: Offers to buy 300 cubes extra, creamery buttor, 22c; 60 tons choice No. 1 white oats, $28.SO f. o. b. Portland. Offers to sell 5 csjes Wisconsin block Swiss. Summer make, 18c; 3 .drums Wisconsin Swiss, 10c; C cases Oregon Llmburger, 16c; 4 cases Wisconsin cream block, ISc. Sales 1 drum Swiss cheese, lic: 1 case cream brick, lRc; 1 case block Swiss, ISc. Local produce receiits for the 24 hours ending at 11 A. M. yesterday were as fol lows: 22 boxes asparagus, 6(1 boxes butter, 2 boxes beans, 4S boxes cherries; SS coops chickens. 1 coop ducks. 156 cases eggs, 102 h-igs, 84 mutton, OT veal, 2 boxes rhubarb. 26 sacks peas, 1290 crates strawberries, 100 ' rack potatoen. 172 sacks mixed vegetables. 172 sacks limes, 30 sacks cabbage, 10 sacks cauliflower. 122 packs onions. Al.TIVK 1NQC1RV FOR OI-I HOI'S. rrospects for an Average Crop in California This Year. Very little business was reported In M07 hops yesterday, but there was a good de mand for l(Kte, and 2 cents was bid for a choice lot. It Is estimated that not over 3400 hales of olds remain unsold lr the state. Among the transactions In 10O7s was the i ur chaso by Dorcas Bros, of 86 bales from RehkofT A Niece, of Grants Tass. at S cenis. The following report in market and ciap eruditions In California, dated May Jl. has bn received from Hall & Rlchardsjn, of ganttt Rosa: 1 here has been only one sale the past week In this county.. The Woodward lot was so.d t.j Donovan and we believe the price was 4.. V'hlle the recent showers were light, they did some goo to the hop hills, and stringing an tying are now In progress. The vine look -well In most sections and have siood the drouth well. We have only a very slight reduction in acreage In California, but a riumter of growers are tying but two wirings whtre they tied three to four in former years. Th-srs are a number of yards in Mendo cino that are not being worked, but we hear that the American Hop & Barley Company have planted some 100 acres in that section, o we do not look for any great shortage from up there. Sacramento growers are working all their acreage and the vine In- that section look well. . HIGHER TRICES OFFERED FOR OATS. Strong Demand From California, But Trans portation Facilities Limited. The strong California demand for oats is the feature of the grain market. An offer to buy (SO tons of No. 1 white at $28.50 was posted at the Board of Trade yesterday, an ' advance of 60c over the offers of Mon day. Shippers complain of Inadequate transportation facilities out of this port, and as a consequence a considerable quan tity of oata Is piling up on the docks await ing shipment to California. The Puget Sound ports have an advantage over Port- land in this respect, as they have not only plenty of liners offering Bpace, but the rate from the Sound to San Francisco is 50c a ton cheaper than the rate from Portland. The local rate south is $2.5 per ton. There are a good many steam schooners on the Coast available for handling oats, but they demand deck loads of lumber as well as their hold cargoes, and the present state of I the lumber market does not permit of this arrangement. The continued depression tn the Eastern wheat markets has no apparent effect on this coast. California is still clamoring far wheat and this keeps prices up to the former high level. General quotations of 80c on club and 910 on blue stem are given by dealers, but one large firm reports the purchase of a lot of club at 90c, and it Is doubtful whether the open prices quoted by the trade would dislodge any consider able quantity of grain held by farmers. Saturday (lowing on Front Street. Business on Front street on Saturdays will hereafter come to an end at 3 P. M. sharp. At the meeting of the Produce Mer chants' Association this action was decided upon. The association a short time ago voted to transact no business on Sunday, and the arrangement was found to be satis factory to all concerned. There Is very little demand for produce after 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoons, and it was decided to put the closing rule Into effect at that hour. StrawWrrles Clean I'D. Ughtcr receipts of California strawberries and the good quality of the offerings caused improvement In the market yesterday. Sup plies were practically cleaned up at the close of business. Jessies sold at $1.23 1.B0 and Dollars at $1.00 1.75 per crate. Receipts of Oregon berries were fair, but the quality was not much better than pre viously. Sales were at 10i:v4c per pound. The heavy arrivals of the day were a car each of cabbage, onions and oranges. Ten Per Cent Commission for lb in titers. With only one or two exceptions, all the Front street commission dealers have signed the agreement to charge 10 per cent com mission on consignments of eggs, butter, poultry and dressed meats. The agreement will go Into effect June 1. Heretofore the Portland trade has been working on a 5 per cent basis, though It Is said that In every other city on the Coast 10 per cent commission Is charged In handling country produce. - (tteadier Tone In Casrara Market. Eastern advices note a steadier feeling in the Caacara bark market, as a result of the firmer situation in Kurope. The London MOV holdings of the Stallman Fulton Com pany, which it was feared would be thrown on the market, have been taken over by a syndicate, and this action has steadied the markets all over the world, though current prices are but little affected. Sound Cities Want Butter. There were ' no changes in the country produce markets yesterday. Poultry re ceipts were light, the demand good and prices firm. Eggs were variously quoted on the street at from 1814c to 20c. Northern orders are again coming In for butter, for which there Is also a good local demand. Bank Clearings. TRADING IS ANIMATED Favorable Events Seized I'pon to Rush I'p .Prices, While Unfavor able News Is Ignored Gold Exports Xo Surprise. NEW YORK, May 13. There was no mis taking the strength In today's stock mar ket and the speculation showed animation and considerable variety. Tne principal op erations were attributed still to the larger financial powers, and the professional ele ment was timid about venturing to sell the market short. In face of this belief In sup port by such formidable factors. The purpose to foster the demand for new capital Issues was believed to prompt the measures to control the market and as the Harrlman Pacifies are credited with the largest Interest at present In this pur pose, owing to the imminence of new is sues, the sustaining operations In the stock market were commonly believed to emanate from sources in alliance with those com panies. The meeting of the directors of the Union Pacific and the Southern Pacific resulted In the declaring of the regular divi dends on both stocks, and that action helped the stocks, but they were more affected by rumors regarding the coming financing, on which no announcement was made. The rise In Southern Pacific pre ferred Indicated the credence that was given to a report that it was In contem plation to waive the company's privilege to redeem the 7 per cent preferred stock at 115. The existence of this privilege has had the effect of holding tne price of the stock close to that level. The motive for this supposed Intention is said to be the desire to market the balance of authorized preferred stock In the treasury of the com pany. The rumor of an Intended extra distribu tion of Northern Pacific stock was revived. Both the Hill stocks and St. Paul are bene fited by the large sales of new stock ef fected before the financial depression set in. Suppositions as to the benefit to the com panies of these funds In nand available for expenditure during the period of depression and low prices of materials play a part in the strength of the stocks. The prevailing temper of the speculation was clear from the avidity with which hints of favorable events were seized upon to rush up prices, while events seeming to bear unfavorably on the outlook for values were ignored. The engagements df gold for export, while large, were entirely expected on account of the abundance of money here, the de cline In the foreign trade balance In our favor and some remarketings here of for eign holdings of American securities. Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value, $4,476,000. United States-, bonds were un changed on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing . a . Snles. High. Low. Bid.
