THE 3IOKXTXG OKEGONIAX, MONDAY, MAY 11, 1908. 9 BACK TO NATURE AT PORTLAND PARK Thousands Throng Favorite Recreation Spot All Day Sunday. NEED LARGER GROUNDS Plans Now Under Way for Many Changes That Will Remove Arti ficial Effects and Give More Natural Appearance. Ths City Park presented a gala ap pearance yesterday, when thousands of (rally-dressed people took advantage of the warm sunshiny afternoon to visit this sylvan retreat. It Is estimated that be tween 10,000 and 15,000 people visited the park yesterday afternoon. The park was crowded to its utmost capacity. At times the crowd grew so dense that people were forced to leave the walks, while the benches and swings were crowded to overflowing; by the immense throng. The present area, wjiich comprises about 20 acres, was not sufficient to handle half the crowd that thronged' the walks and driveway yesterday. Port land has the facilities to develop one of the most beautiful parks in the world and this will no doubt be realized in time. It is the Intention of the city to utilise the natural resources that abound In Oregon and to make the park resem ble nature as nearly as possible. At the present time the objection Is made that there is too much of the green-house effect; that it savors too much of the artificial to appeal to the artistic eye. Los Angeles and other Southern Cali fornia parks are said to be too artificial to be really artistic, while the Golden Gate Park of San Francisco is pointed out as one of the nearest returns to na ture existing in the United States. To this end. It Is the intention of the Portland Park Board to make sweep ing changes in the design of the City Park. The buildings, which are now scattered over, the entire area, will be grouped nearer together, and thus do away with the zoological effect now ex isting. Will lse Native Plants. On the borders- of the main drive the turf effect Is to be replaced by English ivy cuttings, which will not only give an evergreen border but will lend a more rugged, artistic and natural effect to the entire park. Already a number of Mount Hood lilies have been set out and the park will be covered by these beautiful plants as fast .as they can be secured. The blossom of the Mount Hood lily is snow white, blending perfectly with the green background. Three hundred rhododendron bushes have been secured and will be planted at once. The flowers are pink and very beautiful. This shrub Is Intended to supplant the present hedge that adorns a number of the driveways and walks. The plan of the Park Board Is to do away with all the greenhouse effects and to make the park typical of Oregon and as natural as possible. If the park bond Issue is -successful, the area of the present park will be doubled and a fine driveway established. The new proposed driveway will give a magnificent view of the city and would, without doubt, prove a great attraction to visitors. The entrance to the park from Wash ington street Is In a deplorable con dition and extensive Improvements will be made here. Another Improvement to be made, which experts say will mean a saving of hundreds of dollars, is the doing away- of the carpet bedding system on the slopes now in vogue at the park. This is said to be one of the most ex pensive forms of landscape culture, while the effect produced is by far Inferior to that secured by utilising the natural resources surrounding Portland. The car pet bedding system gives the woods in the background an artificial appearance, marring the general effect of the entire park. Ship Gulnea-PIgs to Seattle. The City Park management ehipped 25 guinea-pigs to Seattle Friday. These lit tle animals will be used by the City Health Department of Seattle in experi menting with 'bacteria bacilli. A move is on foot to exchange Beveral of the nine elk now In the park for newer blood. The present herd has been inbred for so many years that the animals are degener ating at a rapid rate, and unless some thing is done, the present herd will be extinct within a few years. If It can be arranged, an exchange will be made with some other soo, and the elk now in the park will be separated and scattered. Like the buffalo and bison, the elk is rapidly becoming extinct, and only in the high and mountainous regions, remote from civilisation, can this lordly monarch of the forest be found. In Oregon at the present time, there are very few elk and even all traces of them are rapidly fading away. In former years, elk trails and wallows could be found all over the mountain regions of the state but even these are becoming obliterated. The pass ing of the elk marks the closing of an GRAIN TONNAGE EN ROUTE AND LISTED FOR PORTLAND COMPLETE TO MAY 11 Name, Flag and Rig Tons. Aberfoyle. British ship 1697... Ahnes Oswald. The next generation will see elk only in captivity as the present generation sees the buffalo. Buffalo Calf an Attraction. The chief attraction among the animals at thTark, however. Is the buffalo calf, which was bom Tuesday. During the entire day yesterday, crowds gathered around the pen where the calf Is kept with Its father and mother. This is the first buffalo born in captivity In Oregon, and Is considered a valuable addition to the soo. The calf appeared extremely lively yesterday, and was zealously guard ed by the male buffalo. The park has but one pair of these animals, whicn are fast disappearing, and for this reason the appearance of this calf In a strange land and In a strange age Is considered doubly fortunate. An experiment Is being made at the park, whereby Chinese pheasant eggs are being set under hens, and if they hatch satisfactorily, an attempt will be made to domesticate a number of these beauti ful birds. It will not be possible to do much along this line, however, until the new under-planting becomes dense enough to afford some protection to the birds. This Is said to be carried on In England to a large extent. THREE SHIPS TO LOAD GRAIN FLEET IN PORT IS CTJT DOWX TO THAT NUMBER. Edouard Detaille, Norn la and Albyn Ready for Sea Latter Takes Lumber.
