CRUISER GOMES JUNE 1 CHARLESTON ABLE TO ItEMAIN UNTIL JCXE 6. Dates of Arrival of Yorktown and Fourth Torpedo Flotilla Not Yet Announced. Official notice was received by Cap tain W. H. Patterson, the local "war ship" pilot, yesterday, that the first class cruiser Charleston, flagship of the Pacific cruiser squadron, Rear-Adntfral Charles Swinburne, commanding, would arrive in Portland Harbor Monday, June 1, the first day of the Portland Rose Festival, and wouud remain here during the entire week. Accompanying the ' letter of notification were advices to the effect that the flagship Charles ton had Bailing orders which required her to depart from Portland Saturday, June 6. the final day of the gay festivi. ties. This, however, will give the flag officers of the squadron the opportunity to attend the grand ball, which is to be held at the Armory on the night of June 6, upon which- occasion the visit ing Naval officers are to be made the guests of honor. . It will be several days before it can be announced definitely when the gun boat Yorktown and the fourth torpedo boat flotilla will be ordered to proceed to Portland, Inasmuch as the orders from Secretary Metcalf affecting these boats were issued some days after the billet for the flagship was announced. It is understood that the Yorktown will come here attended by the five torpedo-boats and torpedo-boat destroy ers, but no word has been received here as. to the. exact date of sailing. For this reason, neither the Rose Festival Association nor the local commercial bodies will make any attempt to pre pare programmes of entertainment un til the official movements of the squad ron coming here have been announced. There is even some doubt as to whether the small squadron will be assembled here for ' the Festival, although all preparations for having the crews of the warships take part in the water carnival are progressing. While no especial arrangements will be made for showing conspicuous hon ors to the detail of the Pacific fleet coming here, the Naval officers at tached, to the ships ordered here will be honored in a manner entirely be fitting their rank and station in all the social functions of the Festival week. The Rose Festival yesterday estab lished its information and accommoda tion bureau in the Swetland building, and from now on until the opening of the celebration will be In a position to take care of all Inquiries for board and lodging from out-of-town communities, as well as to list local hotels, lodging houses, restaurants and private resi dences where Festival visitors will be able to secure bed and board during th week. If Smith should stand in with the Beef Trust and raise the price of all kinds of meats only 1 cent per pound, it would mean an extra profit of over 52000 a day to the Trust. But he won't raise the price of meat; he won't stand in with the Trust, he won't sell out to the Trust ever and always he will stick to his job of FIGHTING THE BEEF TRUST" When you come to Smith's, see that Smith's name and "Fighting the Beef Trust" is over the door, and then come in.
