TIIE MORNING 0r:oJA-. SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 1H. FT LILIAN TINGLE. THE markets are assuming a Sum meTlik appt-amncf with the plen tiful supply of asparagus, grpen pas and bean. ?alad plants and straw Ixrrirs, the latter at and 15 cents a box. Cherries made their debut this week; but th- are small red visitors from California, not the large mouthfuls of d'lkious juirlnesn that we think of. here In Oregon, when we hear the word "cherry.". These imported ones cost 40 to 50 cents a pound. 1 saw some Aery nice pineapples which ugested "turquol!e salad" to my mind. I never have known the reason for that nam and never expect to. but the salad Is rather a pleasant one in spite of that. tireen peas are good just now, eitlier Blon- or in a cblckn or hrimp "wiggle" for lunch or supper; or reappearing cold 111 a saJad "Russian" or "Washington" or other appropriate kind, when their la.n state is often better than their first. They cot & to lo cents a pound and MJgar peas can be had for 15 cents. If you are of an economical mind, you will save the liquid In which the latter are cooked for use in creme de petits puis," which sounds so much more in teresting and expensive than plain "cream of green pea soup." 1 saw some very good "English seed cucumbers at 26 cents each, as well ms the ordinary hothouse kind at 25 to 25 cents each. There were particularly ft nod cauliflowers, too, at 10 to 20 cents. Asparagus this week costs about 10 and 35 cents a pound, the Oregon asparagus being especially good. 'hicory seems to be past Its prime, but Oregon head lettuce Is c-ndng In something that I. for one, have been looking forward to for months. What is better than a fresh gold-green well dressed lettuce salad, crisp and yet so tender that it almost melts in your imuth? Green peppers are a little lower in price and artichokes can be had for 3 rents each. Tomatoes cost 20 cents and so do the early string beans. Dandelion, sorrel, spinach, green onion and mus tard greens are all good now. There seemed scarcely as large a va riety as usual In the fish market. Smelt rs no longer to the fore and there ap peared to be very little black or rock cod. But sturgeon Is again to be had at 15 cents and shad, at from 5 to cents a pound. Shad roe cose--? to 4d rents.' Sea trout were plentiful at : to 25 cents and fine striped bass at r bout the same price Croppies, sole, flounder, halihu. satmon and herring, crhs nd dams, as usual. Toultry prices wern just the same as last week about i5 cents for turkeys and ducks and J0 cents for chickens and geese, the latter being rather scarce. Manley, and a pleasant "social hour' over the teacups. Mrs. Dowd read a paper telling of her Impressions and experience on a recent visit to Rome. Mrs. Manly gave an account of the many fields of work now open to and occupied by women, and reviewed the achievements of woman's clubs in different states. Miss Brown's rich con tralto was heard to great advantage in three songs: "Kleanore" (MalltnsorO. 'Turn Ye to Me" (Old Highland melody) and "Der Asra" (Rubinstein). Ntlce was given of the meeting to ne held at ? today in the ITnltariarf Church, by the Consumers league, in regard to the closing of stores on Satur day evenings, a matter in which the Woman's Club takes a keen interest.
