THE 3I0BXIXG OTCEGOXIAN, MONDAY, APRIL 6. 190S. STANFORD WILL IE President David Starr Jordan Outlines Plan to Be Followed. WILL ADOPT GERMAN IDEA tni-erfity and Collcjr Students H-ave Different Needs and These Will Be Met Pralcs Kugby Football. Or. David Starr Jordan, president of Llnnrt Si ;.tif-rd, Jr., University, of Cali fornia, was in Portland yesterday on his w ;iy home from a lecture tour in Mon tana. I Jc was accompanied by his sec retary and occupied rooms at the Port land Hotel durinff his phort stay in this city. Hp left lut night lor Palo Alto. lr. Jordan, a giant physically and men tally, when seen in his parlor at the hotel yesterday, was suffering from a severe cold, contracted on his trip, having been t ravelin? on trains five consecutive nights In a climate different from that he is ac customed to in the Snnta Clara Valley. He talked freely about all matters con cerning affairs at the University, however, with one Interesting exception, and when asked to make some comment on recent events at Stanford, shook his head nega tively anil replied that he had given out a sta tement before leaving home which had been published widely, and added that he had nothing further to any on the subject at this time. He said. "I think further discussion of the matter could serve no useful purpose." Dr. Jordan said that the buildings damaged by the earthquake, two years ago, were being restored and that consid erable restoration had been completed... The church tower has not been restored and work on that. In all probability, will be deferred for some time. Favors Rupby Football. In speaking of athletes at Stanford, he said that a recent article ho had con tributed to the Pacific Monthly gave his views fully on the subject of the adoption of the Rugby game at the University. He said he is convinced that the Rugby game is superior in important particulars to the American game, and especially so for high schools where proper physical training and direction are not always available. He said the American game is objectionable in that through Injuries and the amount of training called for, students are kept away from their work. Ho said that in the American game only heavy men are choBen for tho different important positions on the field, so that light-weight young men are deprived of whatever benefit membership on the col lege team Is supposed to bring. He cited the case of young FVnton, of Portland, who has made an excellent record In the game as played at Stanford, and remarked that it is doubtful if he would have risen to so much distinction in that lino if the American game had been played. Pr. Jordan, in referring to the recently published news that a change is to be mad In the University courses, aald: "The reference in tho Associated Press dispatches to proposed changes in the plan of instruction at Stanford arose from a conversation with an alumnus at Spokane. These charges a re not decided on merely held in contemplation to tako effect possibly in five years. The same plan Is under consideration in several of the yreat Ka stern universities. Follow German System. "It Is. in brief, to separate the Uni versity from the College, making the former, as in Germany, a place not of Ken era I education and elementary training but of special training in technical, professional and research lines. "The Gorman Gymnasium or High School ends abput with our present sophomore year. The university be gins with our present junior year. That degree of advancement about represents the point where a man ought to devote himself chiefly to the line of his future career. "One great embarrassment of the American university is the presence in the same institution and under the same rules of a large number of boys and of men seeking genera I education only, with the true university student, the man engaged in his life work. "The two classes demand a different tvpe of teachers. The boys need friends and drillmastcrs. The univer sity men demand professors who shall have creative force along lines of re search. Work for High Schools. Very soon the former lines of work must he relegated to smaller colleges and to supplementary high schools, while the university will be a place for another type of work. The ordinary college cannot do this higher work, but the lower work it can often do. through better personal supervision, better than any university can. "If this plan is carried out, four vea rs will be required in the univer sity for degrees in law. five in medi cine and three to four in engineering. "Doubtless many institutions will vldue this change at the same time, bV I hope to see Stanford among the first to lead in this direction. "As to medical education, arrange ments are In progress whereby the Cooper Medical College trust, founded by .r. Levi Cooper Lane, will be turned over to the trustees of Stan ford University to become an Integral part of that institution. This includes the Lane Hospital and the Lane Med ical Library. The general scion title part of medical education, physiology, hygiene, bacteriology, chemistry, anat omy, will be given at Stanford. The clinical courses, wHh surgery and pathology, will be given in San Fran cisco. The details will be made pub lic when the arrangement Is com pleted." MISS STODDARD GOES EAST Inherits Fstate nd I-oaves Baker Company for Trcscnt. The Baker Theater Company L nirain temporarily without a leading woman, for Wanche Stoddard, who has been ap pearing auccespf ully in that capacity for the past few weeks, left last nipht for Oiiesso. whore she expects to spend two weeks and possibly longer. It all comes about because Miss Stoddard's foster mother died a few days asro and left tije actress a tidy littie fortune, in the settling up of whirh affair Miss Stoddard's pres ence in Chicajto is necessary. On this account the special Ibsen mati ng arranged for Wednesday and Thurs day of this week, in which Miss Stoddard was to have appeared in "Rosmersholm." are indefinitely postponed and those who have purchased tickets for them may secure a return of their money by pre senting them st the Baker box offlce. COURSES Upon Miss Stoddard's return, which Is somewhat Indefinite, it is likely the mati nees will be given. In the meantime Louise Kent will play Hie role of Roma in "The Eternal City" next week, succeeding temporarily to the position of leading woman. Miss Stod dard has deve!oied a considerable fol lowing during her stay here and her re turn will be eagerly awaited by the Baker patrons. S. M. COHH WILL GO EAST , Seeking New Attractions for Mar quam Grand Theater. S. Morton Cohn. general manager for the Imperial Amusement Company, which owns the Marquaoi, will leave tomorrow for New York on a business trip which will necessitate his absence for several weeks. While Mr. Cohn does not disclose the purpose of his trip further than to say that he wants to look over the amusement situation, it Is assumed that he will make ar-rang-emer.ts to secure attractions for the Marquam Grand for next season. Mr. Cohn has a wide acquaintance among Eastern theatrical men and is one of th shrewdest managers on the Coast, so the local public may be as sured that he will get something- prood for local theater patrons. Mrs. Cohn will accompany hitn. Catch Fteh by the Banket. MARSH FIELD. Or.. April 5. (Special.)
