Taxes Must Be Paid Before Wednes day to Avoid Tort Per Cent Penalty. Today and tomorrow the Courthouse corridors vM bo crowded with lortp lines of tardy property -owners and citizens, who have waited tmtil the last moment to pay their taxes and to repister for the primaries. All who have not paid their taxes and who do no: do so today, must pay ii per cent addition. One per cent a mor.th will be added to this amount until paid. Tnus what is now a tax of $V0 wiil become 9110 tomorrow. Property owners may pay half their taxes, how ever, and have the balance extended until next October. The tax department will be open until a late hour tonight. The total unpaid tax now stands at Jri.'S.oaS.Jt. but $--"3.75$ of this is the tax ott the money, notes and accounts of the O R. Ar N. Company, which has been taken into court. The company pro fsted before the County Board of Equali zation ajrainst the payment of this tax. ftllepinc that the property belonged to the L'nien Pacific Company, and that the funds were only held m Portland to pay for cy; st ruction work and repairs. But this explanati-n did not satisfy the Equalization Board and the railroad's pro test was of no avail. A heavy collection of J2.5?7.fr3.76 has been made thus far this year, the total tax roll being $3. 226. 5-54.?5. Deputy S. B. Martin's report of collections shows a much larger total at this time than was expected, in vie-w of the recent tightness of the money market. Saturday night th total number of voters registered for the primary election, ta be held Friday. April 17, wax 25.533. As tomorrow is the lat day for receiv ing registrations, the deputy clerks have, iflid in an extra supply of pens and will do Their best to keep up with the grand final rush. Tonight the boofcs will be open at the Courthouse until 9 o'clock, but tomorrow they will c?ose at 5 P. M. sharp. Ail who do not sign before that time will be excluded. The total registration will go over the jft.-vo mark, as 7S7 registered Saturday. Of this number 60 swore alliegance to the Republican faith. 16 were Democrats, and 4a were of other political parties. Every effort has been put forth by County Clerk Fields to accommodate all comers, and to swell the grand total as mueh as possible, as he believes every legal voter should register, whether he be Republican. Democrat, or what-not. Political clubs have also taken up the matter and have urged citizens to get in line and sign up.
