'Thomas B. ton:romer- knew what he was ditjne; when he went, live years apo. hito that part of Klh kitat County north of Arlington. Or., knnwn as the sace and i sand flats of the Columbia Valley, ami bought something over three sections of this land that had been mt:ch s-mpht by sheepmen fnr Winter ranpe and early lambmjr." said one of Mr. Montgomery's friends in Lyle today. Mr. MontKomer- came to Gtldendale nine years apo and accepted a cashier's position in a bank that Waiter H. Moore had started. Previous to this time Mr. Montgomery had seen the transformation of sage and sand dimes in California into great vineyards of Muscat and Fiame Tokay grapes. After he had conducted the bank for four years the institution was sold. About this time the voters nominated and elected him treasurer of Klickital County. He served four years. Puring his term he ascertained the North Bank road would be built. He had not forgotten what he had seen growing in the vineyards about The Dalies and Arlington. Or. So just five years ag" Mr. Montgomery, who had come to. the Pa cine Coast from New York, hied himself to the owners of the desnlate sage and sand flats opposite Arlington. Or., on the Washington side, and purchased them cheap. Iter he platted the town of Roosevelt and built some business houses that at or-f found ready occupants. The doubting Thomases about Goldenuale predicted the ex-banker had reached the end of his rope. The founder of the future Fresno of the Co lumbia Valley, after his term of office as County Treasurer had expired, moved to the new town. For a time he did nothing but collect A few rents, talked up the town and the similarity of the Columbia and the Sacra mento Valleys as the home of the grape. Some nrvuhs ajro. after the North Bank road had laid its track to the town, there came one day pome strange gentlemen to Hoosevelt. One of th party made a care ful examination of the soils on Mr. Mont gomery s lands and it has been learned since that the man was an export on soils. Another of the party seemed to be an engineer who was looking o er the possibilities of water for the town and adjacent lands. Today the reported sale of a part of the lownsite of Roosevelt and adjoining three sections to a Seattle syndicate headed by Samuel Hill for the sum of $54 is conr-rmed by Mr. Montgomery. Although some parts of the country are suffering from hard times and lack of work, on Coos Bay activity in the way of substantial improvement was never more in evidence than now. It is expected that the coming Summer will he te banner building season for the city.. One brick building has been com pleted, three concrete structures are wear ing completion and another one is lo be started soon. Work on a $7o.tV0 hotel wilt be started very soon. Contracts have leen let for. many residences and small stores in different parts of uie city and it is estimated that the year UMS will show at least $.V. invested in building. The city has taken slops toward exten sive work in street-paving and many of the big private concerns are making bfg improvements. The Coos Hay Gas a: j FJeetrie Company has finished its new gas plant and has started to build a new elec tric light plant to meet the increased de mand. The C. A., Smith mill is now in full operation. Many houses are bein erected near the mill and a tramway is being built from the mill to Marsh ticld, and on this road the lumber will be brought from the mill to the local lumber yard. In Bunker Hill and Bay Park Additions, both suburbs of the city, the clearing is scarcely keeping pace with the new houses which are rapidly creeping back in the timber and on the htds. In F.ast side. the new city opposite Marshnold. at least 20 new houses are in the course of erection, and in North Bend several handsome residences have been com pleted. b-ides many smaller cottages It takes little more than an hoar to elect a U.
