TELLS NEEDS OF THE AGE Modern Education on Broad Basis, Says Dr. Jone. Dr. Jenkin Lloyd Jones, pastor of the People's Church, Chicago, deliv ered an address at the Unitarian Chapel last night on the subject, "The Three Rs." Formerly, he said, the pedagogues of the little red school houses believed reading, writing and arithmetic, to be all-essential, but to day It is realized that he who has a lack of reverence for great 'things, for thing's minute, and for his fellow be ings, lacks proper education.. Dr. Jones took for his text one of Goethe's novels. He said: "Reverence is that respect for law, that deference to old age, that suscep tibility to beauty, that sense of pro tection for the helpless and injured, which is the highest test of charac ter, as It is the rarest ar.d noblest fruit of education. We hear much to day about the higher education. I plead for the better education, and that better education is to develop this reverence. "A man's capacity for fellowship is a test of his culture. It is an academic expression that he knows no language who knows but one, but it is equally true that he knows no country who knows but one. He can love no flag who loves but one."
