I have been vry much interested in the controversy about the proposed packinc housc location in South Portland. Will someone enUsrhen us as to what will be done with, about, three miles of the South Portland waterfront. If manufacturers are not allowed there? Are we to have our park system extended? The Schwarzschild Sulzberger people are certainly worthy of very serious consideration, before refus ing them a permit to build -their plant in South Portland. As the writer under stands it. they only ask a permit to con- MAKtn . OF MENS 231 WASHINGTON ST: PORTLAND ORCfiON. r CLOTHES duet business and build a modern plant. After tt erection, and operation, should it prove a nuisance, the city could and would put them out of business. The modern packing plant is nothing to be compared to the old-fashioned slaughter-house. The lo cation of such a plant means more to the city of Portland than one would suppose on first consideration. A K. BENTLEY. Han an shoes fit the feet. Rosenthal's. Prices of meat nave been boosted outrage ouslv this past week in Chica go, the home of the Beef Trust. The poor est cuts of meat are costing 14c. and the choice cuts 24c. In Portland the price of meat remains the same, not because the Beef Trust wants it that way, but be cause .Smith is doing it that way. We want every house holder in the city to stand by us in our efforts to keep the price of meat down. P r a c t I c ally every other market in the city is supplied bv the Chicago Beef Trust. Smith is ask ing 3c a pound for the cheapest cuts of beef, and only 12c and 15c for the very choices t that's cheap eriough for anybody. FRANK L.
