Protest Raised When Detectives In terfere With Boxing Under Aus plees Building Trades Club. Thp boxing and wrestllnir bouts held last night at Merrill's Hall under the auspices of the Building Trades Ama teur Athletic Association were fre quently Interrupted by the intervention of the police. Detectives Smith and Kay Ktopped the first bout, whTCh was between Kid Tarkinson, of The Dalles, and Young Hurst, of La Grande, de clared that the bout was too rough and at their order Referee Joe Stutt railed off the event. The big crowd present yelled for more bouts and hooted the officers, but order -was quickly restored. After a conference the programme was allowed to pro ceed with the announcement that the men entering the ring would give merely sparring exhibitions. All went well until the final bout had progressed three rounds, when an extra round was called for by the spectators. This was the main event of the evening and was between Gene Sullivan and Young Yorke. Both men rut up a clever exhibition, but as soon as they entered the ring for the extra round Detective Tnith jumped; into hc arena and stopped the fight. A large number of the spectators de clared that there was nothing to war rant the action of the officer. This view was taken by I", D. Hall, secre tary of the Longshoremen's Union, who lfsued the following statement: "We would like to know why it was necessary for the police to Interfere In this affair when there was hardly 'my evidence of roughness? 1 have seen three knockouts in one night at the Multnomah Club and plenty of Mood spilled, and yet a police sergeant and a half dozen detective were not sent there. Is tt that the Building Trades Council Amateur Athletic Asso ciation la to be discriminated against? During the bouts six-ounce regulation ploves were used and none of the boys received any Injury. We intend to In quire Into this apparent, discrimina tion. ' The officers delegated to the place last night refused to say anything relative to their action, except to an nounce that they wer acting under orders. SMI Til SON IIOMT FROM. EAST Hurdler Will Take Short Course at Oregon Agricultural College. Forrest C. Smlthson. the famous track athleta of the Multnomah Ama teur Athlelio Club, who has been breaking a few . records in the East during the paat six months, returned ?ome Thursday night and expressed himself as delighted at again reaching Portland and Oregon. Smlthson indignantly denies that the report that lie ran under the colors of any other club but that of Multnomah, and says that on one occasion only he ran unattached for the reason that he contemplated, remaining Kast at thst time, but Immediately afterward made other arrangements and again wore the winced, '"M." He will remain In Portlajid for a few days and (hen will go to Corvallis, where he is to take a short post-graduate course, and while there will train for the Olympic trvout games to he held ;it i?nn Francisco In June. He cioi s not expect to participate in any other athletic events previous to that meet. DAILY MKTEOROIAXiH'AL. RK.rORT. POUTLAKTX March 7. Maximum ttrv persture.
