Chamber of Commerce from Senators
Bourne and Kulton and Congressmen
Ellis and Hlo' Indicate tliat the efforts
of Oregon's Representatives in Congress
to have a part of Rear-Admiral Evans'
fleet visit Portland durlnjt the -Rose
Festival will be successful. President
Roosevelt has expressed his approval of
the plan and the Navy Department has
aUo made the statement that the fleet
will probably be here in June.
Senator Fulton writes that he has re
coll tentative promiu that the
squadron will be sent here: Senator
Pourne has conferred with the Presi
dent regarding It, and Congressmen Ellis
and Hawley say they hope to be able to
secure the presence of part of the fleet.
Senator Bourne writes:
'The President expressed himself as
being willing for such part of the fleet
to visit Portlund as may be able with
safety to cross the bar, but he would
; be guided by the judgment of Rear
1 Admiral Evans. My own opinion is that
it will be possible to secure the presence
In Portland of some of the vessels during
the Festival."
Hear Salem Orators Tonight.
SALEM. Or.. March 19. Special.) To
morrow nipht the local oratorical contest
of the Prohibition League will be held at
Willamette University, with six contest
ants for the honor of representing Sa
lem at the state contest, to be held at
McMinnvlllc in April. The speakers at
the local contest will be Fred Horn
schuh. Perry Reigelman. D. L Fields,
Mary Gittins, William Schmld and W. G.
Trill. In addition to the honor of, rep
resenting Salem at the state contest, tHfe
winner of the local tryout will receive
a prize of 115. A second prize of $10
is provided. The event will take place
at Willamette University chapel.
