TIIE MORXIXG . OREGOXIAN. FRIDAY, MARCH 20, 1903. 13 CROWD ALISKY HULL Well-Attended Campaign Rally Held by Democrats. E. S. J. M'ALLISTER SPEAKS Discusses Present-Day Political Sit uation, Accusing Republicans of Stealing Party Thunder Bry an's Name Roundly Cheered. Seemingly undismayed by the over-, whelming strength of the Republican party in the matter of registered voters, the Democrats of Portland, or at least a larger percentage of them than has assembled in several years, met in AIiky,Hall last night and listened at tentively to. and at times applauded with enthusiasm, a Bpeech by E. S. J. McAllister, on the political situation. Probably the most remarkable fea ture of the meeting was the fact that Aiisky Hall was crowded to the doors. It has been many moons since the faithful have witnessed such a gather ing of the elans. The speaker's re marks were frequently interrupted by applause, and when he had concluded a rising vote of thanks was tendered him by his audience. Mr. McAllister spoke well, and pro pounded his theories in taking fashion, for his auditors were visibly impressed by his exposition of the principles of the party, as advocated by William Jennings Bryan, Tom Job. neon, of Cleveland, and Joseph "W. Folk, of Mis souri. Incidentally, mention of these tliree names brought for til rapturous Applause. The speaker occupied the floor for two solid hours, during which time he flayed the anti-Statement No. 1 candi dates unmercifully, "and advocated not only the election of George E. Cham berlain to the United States Senate, but also of a solid Democratic legis lative ticket throughout the state. John Montag acted as chairman until M. J. Mai ley made his appearance. S. C. Armitago acted as secretary. The speaker was Introduced by Mr. Montag, and In part spoke as follows:- Should Stand for Principle. I have longed for thin opportunity to ad flrfM you for gome time, and am espe cially pleased to witness this large gather ing. 1 my large advisedly, for I believe n a previous occasion, about a year ago, 1 was introduced to some 13 Democrats who had assembled to hold a rally. We Demo crats of Portland have elected our Mayor .for two term, but that of itself is of but little significance when the matter of party principles is taken Into consideration. Dem ocrats should be Democrats' for principle ind not Democrats for office or the emolu ments of office, it has been said that the Democratic party has been worsted in de bate, at the polls and in everything; else. This in not true. The Democratic party has advocated for 40 years the principal planks on which the Republican party stands today, and the adaptation of these policies by Uie party now in power Is responsible for the present-day spectacle of Democrats en rolled upon the registration books as Re publicans. The Republican party today is thoroughly impregnated with Democratic doctrine, yet discards the real principle honesty and caters to the classes against the masses. The time Is coming. Indeed it Is not re mote, when the people of this great coun try of ours will rise up and return to the party which stands for no special privi leges, no class legislation, and no subserv ience to the gigantic corporations. Democ incy will rule on true democratic principles, and the standard bearer of the Democratic party wilt be William Jennings Bryan (ap plause, the one and only man today who can and will assist the common people u gainst the greed and money-mad might if the few possessing enormous wealth; wealth piled up under an unjust tariff that makes it poasibte to buy American steel and Iron products in a foreign land and have them laid down in this country cheaper than they can be purchased within our own do main. Argument Not ljogtcal. At the coming election here in Oregon, centlemen. we are advised bv our Repub lican friends to vote against Statement No. 1 for the reason that they tear George K. Chamberlain will be sent to the United estates Senate. Why should an honest vote fear to send a man to the United States Senate If that man has received the major ity of the votes of the people of this state? The argument Is not logical. It Is like the arguments advanced in support of the high tariff and the retention of the Philip pine). 1 tell you. gentlemen, that every argu ment against Statement No. 1 is an affront to your intelligence, and means that the Republican party proposes to advance the time-worn theory that the men elected to the State Legislature are better qua 11 lied to select the proper man to wear the toga than you. If George Chamberlain receives t lie majority of the votes next June, he should be sent to Washington as your rep resentative In the Senate. Oregon, by her primary law, is one of the few states in a position to free herself from the enslavement f boss rule, and let us hope that our glorious state will continue to be free. Democrats must sooner or later realise that the time is coming when the Republican party will fall and we will regain the power that la our right. W Hand for no especial privileges, no trust legiMatlon, no bribery and corrup tion with which our fair land has become polluted under the regime of the Republican party In Its present trust-ridden condition. Assert your rights as free-born American eittnens and vote for the Democratic candi dates from one end of the ticket to the other. Some of you. through a desire to be affiliated with the majority, have rcglnterod as Republicans. I shall not reproach you for that now, but assert your Independence, throw off the yoke of servility, and at the June election vote for the people's candi dates an represented by the candidates of t he Democratic party. lUSClSSKS STATKMKNT NO. 1 t D. Uvtilgstonc Talks It c Tore Fpr- ty-fi nil-Precinct Hcpublicans. C D. Uvingstone, who is not known to be a candidate for any office, de livered an interesting and instructive talk Wednesday night at the meeting of the Forty-fifth Precinct Republican Club, mi the constitutionality of Statement No. 1. and arrived at the conclusion that Statement No. 1 is contrary to the prin ciples of self government. and an tagonistic to the Federal constitution. Mr. Livingstone discussed the question in the light of reeent history. His re marks mere greeted with generous ap plause. The club indorsed H. K. Northup for Represf ntative. and will work to secure his nomination and election. The club now has indorsed three candidates, H. K. North up and Dr. J. H. Hickman for Rep resentatives, and J. B. Kelly for State Senator. O. Ben Riesland, Allen R. Joy and William Hale were appointed & spe cial election committee to visit other or c.iuigatlon and speak for the candidates Indorsed. With the candidates this com mittee will visit Troutdale next week and other portions of the county and address the. people. It was moved and carried that J. E. Kreuder be asked to become a candidate for County Commissioner. Robert J. Stnnott and Henry S. West brook, candidates for District Attorney, were present and addressed the meeting There was a large attendance and cigars were parsed. Much old-time enthusiasm was manifested. The next meeting will l held Wednesday night, March 25. when a champion of the single tax amendment will be present fce address the club. The Forty-fifth Precinct Republican Club is opposed to Statement No. 1, hav ing declared by resolution that it will support only candidates for office who are Republicans, but will hear all sides of the questions now before the voters. CANDIDATES EXCEED LIMIT Marion Republicans Anxious to Get Into the Legislature. SALEM, Or., March 19. (Special.) The rapidity with which candidates for the Legislature are coming to the front indicates that it will be difficult for either the Statement No. 1 advo cates, or their opponents to limit the number of candidates to ' five on a side, as desired. Already there -are six antU and four Statement No. 1 men on record as candidates for Republican nomination, with five to elect. Those who have signed Statement No, l are: H. D. Patton, H. J. Miller, A. C. Libby, O. I Hatteberg. Those who have not signed State ment No. 1 are: S. A. Hughes, C. M. Crittenden, W. L. Simeral, S. D. Ad kins, F, A. Turner, L. T. Reynolds. PROTEST AGAINST PLANT South Portland Club Opposes Packing-House in City. Protests against the location of the Schwartzschlld & Sulzberger packing plant on the Zimmerman site in South Portland were voiced by the executive committee of the South Portland Repub lican Club at a meeting last night. The committee -formulated a report that will be submitted to the club at its meeting next Wednesday night in Jones Hall, corner of Front and Gibbs street. Dr. F. H. Dammasch attended the meeting and argued that the proposed establishment would be unsanitary, and W. L. Maher, a butcher, gave reasons why the plant would not be a benefit. The executive committee is composed of 15 members of the club, which has a membership covering the Fifth and Sixth wards. President Lillls, of the club, is chairman of the committee. Bourne Asks New Trial. WALLACE, Idaho, March 19. (Spe cial.) Attorneys M. A. Folsom, of Spokane, and A. H. Featherstonc, of Wallace, representing Senator Jona than Bourne, Jr., have filed a motion in the District Court asking for a new trial in the case of Senator Bourne against the Sierra Nevada Mining Company. The motion sets forth that the evidence did not Justify the deci sion for -.defendant and also alleges errors in the trial. The suit Involves rich ore bodies of the Ontario claim near Wardner, and is one of the big gest mining suits that has interested Idaho courts for some years. A suit involving the same question is pend ing in the Federal court, but no deci sion has been given in this. DAILY MKTEO RO LOGIC AX REPORT. PORTLAND, March W.
