The total receipts at the tax depart ment of the Sheriff's office, yesterday amounted to more than JEflO.OOO. Uurins; the day an army of taxpayers lined up from the tax department to the Court bouse door, and as fast as three men took in the cash and checks and shortened the line. It waa made longer by others 'who took the places of those who had gone. It was the last day when the 3 per cent rebate could be secured, so taxpayers were especially desirous of making their payments. Last Saturday was also a banner day. Deputy Sheriff Martin said last night that Saturday's receipts were larger than those of Monday. A large part of this was made up of checks from large corporations. The total tax roll for this year amounts to J3.226.5K4. It Is estimated that only about J3),0fl0 of this remains to be paid. Vp to Saturday night the total receipts were .428.0uO. This $300,000 does not be come delinquent until April 6. By pay ment of half the taa much of this amount will be extended to October 6. When the taxes become delinquent April 6, 10 per cent additional must be paid, and 1 per cent a month will be added there after until they are paid. The tax de partment was open until a late hour last night. DAJI.T METEOROIOOICAI. RETORT. PORTUAKD, March 16- Maximum tem perature. M degrees; minimum. 44. River reading at A.
