Major Will I'orhid Her to Speak if
He l.cnrn Talk Is Likely to
lie Seditious.
Having brtn forbUUlt.ii to speak in
Vublie anywhere I'irouRliout the cities
of the l-'ast. Kuima Goldman, one of
the most notorious exponents of
anarchism In the world, is coming to
Portland. Whether or not she will he
allowed to epresa her views here Is
a question as yrt unanswered. but
Mayor Lane, when Rked about the
matter, said he would investigate. He
said lie will not tolerate any seditious
speeches.
"l bad not previously heard that
Kmina t;oldnian was coining to Port
land.' said Mayor Iane. when he was
informed of her announcement yester
dsv afternoon. "1 strongly favor free
dom of speech, hut 1 will not allow
ny seUltioui utterances to be made in
public; I will investigate and will make
reply later as to whether ahe? ean talk
In publie here.'
Miss Goldman formerly lived in Port
land, and when here she always stood
as leader of the local band of anarch
ists. In more recent years, since she
went Kast. she has become notorious,
and several assassins of late yours
have been found to possess much, of
the literature written by her. It is
generally conceded that she. is a dis
turber, and the police all over the
world dread her presence.
At present Miss Goldman is in Chi
cago, where she has been forbidden to
speak in public. The police of all the
big cities of the Kast have refuse:! to
tolerate her addresses. She expects to
be in Portland In about three weeks,
und is said to be planning for a long
campaign. Alexander Horr. of Seattle,
reached the city yesterday. He Is a sort
of advance agent for her.
Seeking Dock Privileges.
MONTBSANO. Wash.. March 13. (Spe
cial. ) At a special meeting of the Monte
sano Commercial Club last night, a prop
osition was made by W. H. Boetlkes. the
Seattle contractor, to build a spur from
the Northern Pacific tracks to the river
front, a distance of about one mile. Mr.
Boetzkes has a contract to furnish the
Oovernment 250.000 tons of rock to be
used in the Jetty at Grays Harbor. All
he asks of the city is the right, of way
for the spur and 100 or 500 feet of river
front where he can build wharves to
load his lighters. His plan Is to ship the
rock from Bellingham. where it is quar
ried, direct to Montesano, and to load
on barges here and ship by water to
Damon's Point. The matter was at once
taken up by the Commercial dub and if
the. right of way can be secured, work
will begin at once.
