OUTLOOK BRIGHTER ORDtKS FOll LUMBER COMING IX FROM THE EAST. Cirajs Harbor Concerns Expect- to Be Shipping by JSail This Week. More Saws at Work. ABERDEEN', Wash.. Feb. 18. (Special.) The planing mill of the Western Lum ber Company has been running for near ly two weeks. Scott Wcatherwax, of the company, says: "We are having inquiries about lum ber, the first since the panic, which Is an assuring sign. When inquiries brRiii , to come, aftor a quiet period, we make up our minds that the prospects of busl nefg are on the mend. If we could have railroad rates adjusted, the lumber out look for Gray's Harbor would be much better, even though It Is dull In the cargo line." W. B. Mack, of the Slade Mill Com pany, tallted optimistically today. He says that Inquiries for lumber are com ing In and that they have received orders for carload lots from the East and will te shipping aeainby rail this week. In SO days, judging from present Indications, he says he expects to see mills starting ell over the harbor. The Aubo logging camps were started Monday. The camps are on -the St. John River and cedar is cut altogether. The starting of the shingle mills on the har bor have created a demand for cedar logs. About -30 men are employed. FLEECES CHEHALIS CITIZEN'S Smooth Stranger Works Confidence Game to Tune of $300. CHEHALIS, Wa3h.. Feb.' 18. (Special.) A number of Chchalis business men are out of pocket owing to the visit to this city Friday and Saturday of a smooth stranger who gave the name of J. R. Hartman. He was accompanied by an attractive looking woman. Hartma made a small deposit with a local bank. He gave It ouf that he intended to buy a saloon here and while about town made some small purchases for which he drew checks against his bank account. Inves tigation in almost every case developed the fact that tho, checks were good, tout they were written for sums ranging from $3 to $10. After being about town for a day or more Hartman did business on a more extensive scale, presenting checks for such sums of S25 to $40. These latter checks were found to be worthless. It is stated that the. smooth individual cleaned up about $300. Hartman Is about 30 years old. He has light colored hair and Is of medium height. An effort is being made to locate him. Except Flut ter of Eyelids Once Slept for 40 Days. LOS ANGELES. Cal Feb. 1!. In a' cell In the insane ward of the County Hospi tal Mrs. Beulah W. Hawkins, a resident of this city, the woman who startled -local physicians two years ago by sleeping 40 days, has again lapsed into a period of unconsciousness. , . She has now been sleeping for nine days, during which time she has not once opened her eyes or given a sign that she Is still alive other than a nervous flutter of her eyelids and an occasional sigh. The woman Is afflicted with a rare form of catalepsy. ' Two years a,go, when she was unconscious 40 days, she could hear the conversation of those about her, but was unable to give them any sign that she knew or understood. Says Americans Blew I'p the Maine. "HAVANA, Feb. 18, The Diario Espanol, organ of. the ultra-Spanish ele ment, In a leading editorial yesterday! re ferring to the special celebration by local Americans of .the tenth anniversary of the blowing up of the battleship Maine, sas: "To commemorate the blackest blot on American history, the world, including honest Americans, . believing the ship was blown up by direct orders from the War Department for the purpose of jus tification in the plan to despoil Spain-of Cuba," says the paper, "adduces convinc ing proof, that the officers of the Maine attended the funeral of the victims in full-dress uniform, which . showed that they must, have sent their . uniforms' ashore in anticipation of an explosion." and alleges that the reason the wreck has not been raised is that it would con clusively demonstrate that the explosion, was in the magazine. Vote Again on Water-Bonds. ' EUGENE, Or.. Feb. IS. (Special.) On Saturday, April 18'. a special election will be held in Eugene to vote on a. proposed issue of $300,000 water bonds and $50,000 sewer bonds submitted by initiative. At the same time an ordinance prohibiting! extension of the Oddfellows cemetery will be voted upon. The water and aewer bonds have been voted at a former elec tion but under the eland decision these matters must be brought to the people through .petitions. Tax Money Comes Easily. EUGENE. ' Or..
