Court Accepts Mears Resignation and Affairs Will Be Adjusted Under Agreement With Ladd. Having secured a bond of J300.0W). as required by Judge Wolverton, in the Fed eral Court yesterday. R. S. Howard. Jr., will this morning qualify as receiver of the Title Guarantee & Trust Company. The resignation of E. C. Mears. his pre decessor, was accepted by the court yes terday on the filing of a report by Mr. Mears. supplementary to the statement submitted Monday. The bond . of $100,000, required of Mr. Mears. was doubled for the new receiver, with the consent of all concerned. This was done for the reason that Mr. Mears" report shows J1SO.O0O cash on hand, and. with future collections, this amount wilt probably increase. Mr. Howard an nounced last niEbt that the bond had been secured and would be ready for fil ing: In court this morning. Under Mr. Howard's management, the adjustment of the bank's affairs will be gin according to the agreement with "W. M. Ladd. Althouph it is admitted by all that there would be a big shrinkage In the assets If they were disposed of at once. It is believed that they will appre ciate In value rapidly, especially the real estate holdings. That the bank could pay only 50 cents on the dollar, if the holdings were disposed of at the present time, is the opinion of the retiring receiver. WHO'LL fcUYMY PIANO? UNIVERSITY TO ECONOMIZE DEFICIT AT EXD OF TEAR WILIi BE $15,000. Faculty Has Served Three Months ' Without Salary Regents Hope Appropriation Will Win. Rigid economy and the termination of all contracts with Instructors and other employes at the end "of the precent year was urged on the regents of the Univer sity of Oregon by R. S. Bean, president of the board, at a meeting held in the Mohawk building yesterday morning. The necessity of this policy lies in the fact that the additional appropriation for the university, made by the Legislature, has been held up by referendum action. The report of Mr. Bean shows that the expenses of the university for the present year will be about $75,000 and the income $59,213.42, leaving a" deficit of approxi mately $15,000. The faculty has served during October, November and December without salary, but Mr. Bean declares that the available funds "will probably be sufficient, by the most rigid economy, to pay the absolutely necessary expenses for the remainder of the present scholas tic year," when it is hoped the extra ap propriation will be voted at the general election. The regent voted to confer the degree of bachelor of science on Sabro Ozasa, a Japanese, PAWNBROKER IS CHEATED Buys for a Diamond Bit of Glass Worth 50 Cents. "William Tankanogy, who keeps a jfewn shop at 168 Burnside street, was the vic tim of a well planned swindle yesterday afternoon when a colored bunco man separated him from $20 in exchange for a piece of glass supposed to be a diamond. Tankanogy reported the affair to the po lice, when investigation showed that he was victimized by a scheme which would hardly come under the pale of the law. The pawnbroker said that the negro who swindled him brought in a tine dia mond ring for sale. Inasmuch as he had not been in the business very long Taiv, kanogy did not care to make an offer on the ring without consulting some one more expert In gems. So he took the ring over to his friend Mr. Goldberg, a few doors away, and finding that it was worth at least $100 came back and told the negro that he would give him $20 for It. The negro took the ring and consid ered the offer for a moment and then walked to the 'door. He then returned and said: "I hate to let this ring go for $20. but if that is all you will pay me, here goes; you may take it." And with that be handed the pawnbroker what the latter supposed to be the same ring. The negro departed and later when a friend called the pawnbroker showed him the fine diamond ring he bad bought for only $20. The friend discovered the fraud. FRANK L. SMITH MEAT CO.
