Kalowich at First and Flanders streets? after a hot chase by Patrolmen Charles Tennant and James Hunter at 3 o'clock yesterday morning, the police believe they have captured one of a gang? of sneakthicves and burglars who have been commuting depredations In this city during the past several weeks, "kajbwlch, in cotiirany of three . others, was seen at the corner of Second and Burnside streets .by the officers, who in quired as to their business on the streets at that hour. On the approach of the uniformed officers .the quartet dispersed and fled in different directions: Two of them Kalowich and another. whose name he refuses to divulge ran toward Front street, hotly pursued by the offi ! cer. On reaching Front street the two men tilvned north, and on rounding the corner tlie officers caught sight of but one man. the other having disappeared In the fog. Calling upon the fleeing man to hHlt, both officers announced they would shoot, but at that jnncture a colored man. pro prietor of a fruit stand on Front 'street, accompanied by his wife, stepped out on the sidewalk and the vigilant sleuths re placed their armament and sprinted. See Ing that the officers were gaining on him. Kalowich commenced throwing away por tions of his burden, which proved to be pairs of new ohoes and rubbers. Kalowich was run to earth in the cel- . lar of a deserted building at Front and Flanders streets. When covered by the guns of the officers. Kalowich was in the art' of disposing of a 32-caliber revolver, which he attempted to hide behind a pile of rubbish. In the bundle he was carry ing at the time he was spotted by the officers was found 11 pairs of new shoes. . several pairs of rubbers and other, arti cles which lead the police to believe that some clothing store was burglarized Sat- I urday night, although no such affair was reported yesterday. TODAY Title Guarantee & Trust Company Ofticers In Court. ' The Indicted officials of the defunct Title Guarantee & Trust Company, J. Thorburn Ross, T. T. Burkhart, John E. Aitchison and George H. Hill, will enter their ' pleas befoVe Presiding Judge Cleland. of the . State .Circuit Court, today. What their pleas will be cannot be said now, but it is belteVed they will plead not guilty. ". The four ' alleged criminals - were brought into court "last Monday (horn ing and arraigned by District Attorney Manning on four felony charges one being that of unlawfully recetvtng de posits in a bank, knowing it to be in solvent, and the other three are charges of larceny. The bail of Ross and Burkhart was fixed at $20,000 each, and of Aitchison and Hill at $8000. The District Attorney made an attempt to have the bonds of Ross and Burkhart placed at $75,000 each, but the Presid ing Judge thought this too much'. County Clerks of Idaho Counties Get Together and Take Step That Brings Consternation. ' LEWISTON, Idaho, Jan. 12. (Spe cial.) Consternation was caused among certain classes in Lewiston yes terday, -when County Attorney Need-ham- issued orders to Auditor Gifford to issue no more marriage licenses to contracting parties under 18 years of age. It has been the rule at the. Audi tor's office heretofore to Issue the licenses to any couple. If their ages were beneath 18 and the youngsters had secured the consent of their par ents for the union, no further ques tions were Rked- The move is the result of a confer ence of Gounty Attorneys -from Latah, Ada, Nes Perce, Canyon and Washing ton Counties, held in Lewiston recent ly. Leabo In exonerating htm from' th. stigma cast ur-on him by the report of the commltfe on officers' reports at the fifth annual conven tion of the Oregon State Federation of Labor. -The facts are that the newly-elected secretary, J. F. Cassidy, demanded that the books, accounts and report of ex-Secretary Leabo be completely-audited by the board and if found correct, a statement given him to that effect. The entire board, being present, ' ac quiesced In the proposal r and voluntarily, signed the statement that the books, accounts and report are correct ' and above criticism. President C. H.
