A mass meeting of Fillpinoe will be held to resent the action of the Gov ernment. Metzser sells diamonds at 14 per cent profit. 342 Washington street. SENTENCE IS POSTPONED Benson and Pcrrln Will Ask New Trial for Conspiracy. SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 22. John A. Benson and. Dr. Edward B. Perrin, con victed by a Jury In the United States District Court of conspiracy to defraud the Government, in securing 1200 acres of land in Tehama County, were to have been sentenced today by Judge De Haven, but when case was called attorneye for the defense asked for time in which to prepare a motion for a new trial. The prosecution did not object, and Judge De Haven granted a postponement until next Tuesday morning. Grange Headqnarters at State Fair. State Master Austin Buxton has ar ranged to have Grange headquarters at the State Fair, and A. F. Miller, member of the committee of arrangements from Multnomah County, said yesterday that a large tent would be provided. Mr. Miller said that the quarters would be main tained all through the fair, and arrange ments would be made for evening talks and for a general reunion of members from all portions of the state. Grange day at the fair will be September 20, and Mr. Miller Is endeavoring to secure re duced rates from Portland on that occa sion. He thinks that 400 Grangers from Multnomah County would attend If spe cial rates were provided for that day. KILLS CHINATOWN QUEEN Unknown Man's Bullets End Wom an's Life and Probably Own. SAN DIEGO. Aug. 22. Viola Brack ett, one of the most notorious women of Southern California. and known here as "The Queen of Chinatown," was lnstuntly killed this-afternoon by a mqn who shot her twice in the body and the head and stabbed her in the neck. The man then turned the weapon on himself inflicting wounds which will prove fatal. He has not been identified. The woman is known throughout the South as a "woman of the town." She was once married to a Chinaman and secured his property. She owned property In Chinatown here and also in the "red light district" of San Ber nardino, Phoenix and Prescott. PHILADELPHIA. Aug.". 22. James M. Schumaker, ex-superintendent of Capi tol building at Harrlsburg. who plead ed illness and remained secluded in his home at Johnstown during the investiga tion of capltol building scandals, now de clares that he will tell everything he knows. Schumaker alleges that the manip ulation of funds was engineered by a high state ofrtclal for the purpose of covering up a shortage in the, treasury and to save the name of an ex-United States Sen ator of Pennsylvania, now deceased. In a conversation over the telephone Schumaker declared the report that he threatened to disclose the secrets- of the Capitol scandal were falsa.
