The main which will supply Montavilla with Bull Run water has been completed and con nected up, and the people there are now getting what they have been asking tar many years. Connection was made with the high-service reservoir at the south side of Mount Tabor and a good pressure is assured to all portions of the territory dependent on that main, which Is a 12-lrich wooden pipe. This main is the first of the sort to be put down in Portland. It was laid on the suggestion of Mayor Lane so that it could be ascer tained by a thorough test whether such pipe is serviceable. This instance will be a fair test, as the pipeline will carry a heavy pressure, and if there be any weak ness in the pipe it will show Itself. 'The main was laid down the east side of Mount Tabor to the Base Line road and then to Villa avenue. The new main was connected with the present system, which is composed of small pipes and winch must be replaced with larger ones. Full water supply cannot be given with the present service pipes, but It will be. a great Improvement over the service that has been given. All home-cooking. Women's Ex., 133 10th at. "Veteran Tries Marriage Again. Fran cis J. White obtained a license to wed Mrs. Martha E. Kent on Tuesday. When the couple called at the Bounty Clerk's office for the certificate they were ac corded quite an ovation by the clerks and deputies, the veteran having made a good Impression on the office force when he came In at stated times to have his pension papers made out and ac knowledged. Attorney J. El Magers ac companied the couple to certify to Mrs. Kent's residence for the necessary period in Oregon, and speaking of her said she Is a most estimable woman, having two sons at work for the streetcar company, one as motorman aod one as conductor. Mr. White is a veteran of the Spanish War, and after a long siege of illness, most of a year being unable to leave St. Vincent's hospital, has finally almost entirely recovered his health. He is a pensioner of the Government and this pension was the basis of great annoyance to the old soldier. He succeeded in thwarting efforts of certain persons to obtain control of his affairs, had his marriage annulled with a woman with whom he could not get along agreeably, and now is started on another road with every prospect of living happily for the remainder of his life. Crawford, who has been con nected with the Oregon Agricultural College for a number of years, and who formerly was principal of Park School and afterwards City Superintendent, was in Portland yesterday. With his wife he had been to Seattle and was on his way to Corvaliis. He visited points of Interest in Portland, and was surprised at the great growth made since he was at the head of the city schools. Speaking of the Agricultural College Professor Craw ford said that last year 850 students, were enrolled and that 1000 were expected for the coming year if the same ratio of In crease is kept up. Erection of the girls' dormitory, he thinks, will Increase the attendance of young women at the insti tution. Excepting ex-President T. M: Gatch, Professor Crawford has been an educator probably as long as any man now Jn active service in Oregon. Hennessy's Strenuous Solo. When Policeman Ben Peterson heard two shots fired In the vicinity of the Lewis and Clark Fair grounds last night, he rushed for a patrol box and excitedly telephoned to Captain. Slover at headquarters, saying that perhaps a murder had taken place, or that a hold-up was in progress. He was given orders to rush to the scene and investigate. In due course of time, Police man Peterson again hit the phone, ana had something definite to report. No murder had occurred, neither was there a hold-up. The worst that had happened was that Frank D. Hennessy, clerk of the Municipal Court and a well-known vo- callist, was singing a song entitled. "Captain Hardtack on Guard." Dur'ng the chorus of this ditty, two shots are fired, and those were what the officer heard. Not thb Same Walker. The H. B. Walker arrested Monday evening for having stolen a gold watch valued at $100 from Miss Ltda Warner, is not the H. B. Walker who resides at 505 Burnside street. The man under arrest Is said to reside at Gresham, and has been en deavoring to square the case. A brother of H. B. Walker, of 505 Burnside street, desires that the correction be made In justice to the young man, who bears an excellent reputation. Operated on fob Appendicitis. Miss Mabel McDonald, daughter of William McDonald, residing at 613 Northrup street, underwent an operation for ap pendicitis at St. Vincent's Hospital Tues day morning. The operation, which was performed by Dr. H. W. Patton and Dr, B. F. Miller, was successful, and the pa tient will leave the hospital in a few days. Street Lamps for Fostofficb). Threaten Northern Pacific. OLTMPIA. Wash., Aug. 21. (Special.) The Northern Pacific may be prosecuted by the State Railway Commission for hauling damaged cars to the shops at South Tacoma for repairs. Washington has a new law regulating the transporta tion of bad-order cars similar to the Federal statutes. This holds that a rail road must not haul damaged cars past one repair shop to another for repairs to be made. It is said the Northern Paclflo has been doing this. Milwaukee Residence Burns. The fire is supposed to have been caused by the electric wires in the house becoming crossed. Nobody was at home. House and contents were destroyed, the loss be ing about $4000.
