N. C. Aug. 9. Pursued through three states by an angry father, who was only 20 miles, behind her all the way. Miss Julia Jackson Christian, the only living grand-daughter of Stonewall Jackson, the, famous Confederate general,' eloped and was married at midnight to E. Randolph Preston, a lawyer and a member of the Legislature. The pursuit began at Atlanta, and with Miss Christian on the first section and her father on the second, was continued through Georgia, South Carolina and well into North Carolina. Miss Christian demonstrated her abil ity to plan and carry- out the elopement, once she had decided upon it. Her father Is W. E. Christian, assistant gen eral passenger agent for the Seaboard Air line at Atlanta. His daughter, who lives with her grandmother, Mrs. Stone wall Jackson, was visiting him in Atlanta. Mr. Christian was at work in his of fice when he was- surprised to receive a telegram from his daughter announc ing that she had taken a train for Char lotte. X. C. Suspecting that it was her intention to get married, Mr. Christian after a wild ride in a cab reached th'e station just in time to get aboard the second section of the New York and New Orleans limited, one of the fastest trains on the road. , He learned at the station that his daughter was on fhe first section, which had left SO minutes earlier. While the father was riding along 20 miles behind. Miss Christian wired her sweetheart to meet her at the railroad station in Charlotte. Mr. Preston received the message just In time to catch the train. When the train on which Miss Christian and her sweetheart- were riding was half way to Salis bury, the second section pulled Into Char lotte with a mighty angry father on board. Realizing that further pursuit was useless, he gave up the chase.- When Mr. Preston and Miss Christian reached Salisbury they found all In readi--ness for their Immediate marriage, a col lege chum to whom Mr. Preston had tele graphed having attended to everything. An angry bulldog, which treed the chum, caused him to lose much time and got some of his clothing, but the minister was finally gotten out of bed and taken hurriedly to the station, and just as the clftcks were showing midnight Miss Chris tian and Mr. Preston were married. MEDALS FOR CRACK SHOTS Winners Announced in Rifle Shoot at Fort Sheridan. - CHICAGO, Aug. 15. The annual Army rifle competition was concluded today at Fort Sheridan. The following officers are winners of gold medals, the highest possible score being 1000: Lieutenant Wallace, Twentieth Infantry, 817; Lieu tenant Farnhan, Fourth -Infantry, 793; Lieutenant Weeks, Fourth Infantry, 782; Lieutenant Platham, Fifth Infantry, 780; Lieutenant Pardee, Twentieth Infantry, 777; Lieutenant Smith. Sixth Infantry. 777; Lieutenant Lamotte, Fourteenth Infantry, 776; Lieutenant Westover, Fourteenth In fantry, 770. Wash., Aug. 15. Special.) J. A. Wynon, one of the proprietors of the Washington saloon, was arrested in this city today by United States Deputy Marshal Slatter for selling whisky . to Harry Shale, a Qulniault Indian. The evidence was obtained by Officer McGriff. who took the purchased bottle, bearing the saloon man's name, from the Indian. The case will be heard before United States Commissioner Seth Warren. Shalo is the Indian who was -driven from the Qulniault -reservation about a year ago because he would not refrain from drinking. E PENDLETON-PASCO BRANCH DE MANDS ATTENTION. When North Bank Road Is Finished Connection Is to Be Made With That Line. PENDLETON. Or., Aug. 15.-(SpecIal.) A Northern Pacific passenger train is soon to be put on the Pendleton-Pasco run, according to an announcement made by J. G. Cutler, the superintendent of this division, while In the . city today. While no definite date has been set for the putting on of this extra train, Mr. Cutler says that it is assured and that it will be in service just as soon as the necessary equipment can be spared from other parts of the system. The train will consist of two passenger coaches to begin with and will be run upon a schedule that will connect with thel regular mam -line trains of the Northern Pacific. At present a mixed train is run one way each day, and as Mr. Cutler says, this arrangement Is not suffcient to prop erly take care of either the freight or passenger traffic. As soon as the new service goes into effect, .a regular freight will also be put on. Mr. Cutler said that the establishment of this new service had no connection with the building of the North-Bank road, but intimated that as soon as the latter line was completed this city would be given first-class connections with Its trains, thus affording all wha wish an opportunity to go to Portland over the Hill roads. . He said this train was being put on solely to handle the present business of the branch line. Before the W. & C. R. was absorbed by the Northern Pacific, in name as well as in fact, which happened July 1 of this year, Mr. Cutler was the general superin tendent, and now as superintendent of the Pasco division of the Northern Pacific he occupies practically the same position with exactly the same duties. Gray's Harbor Run Not Begun. - HOQUIAM. Wash.. Aug. 15. Special. )- The run of salmon for the Fall fishing has not commenced on Gray"s Harbor yet and the packing companies do not expect to get their plants operating before the first of September. This is one of the lat est years for salmon, but as the run was light all over the Coast, the packers do not look for a very law run this season.
