Busi ness men and property-owners on Grand avenue are becoming apprehensive over the slowness with which the work of im provement Is going forward. The street car company has been at work three weeks laying new tracks between East Morrison and East Stark streets, and still the Job is not completed. Yesterday the entire force of men was pulled off and there was nothing doing. Northing has been done south of Blast Morrison, and north of East Oak to Sullivan Gulch, except the sidewalks have been laid. The double tracks are yet to be laid north of East Oak and south of East Morrison streets to Belmont. There are also gas and water pipes to be laid before the hard-surface pavement can be put down. It is the judgment of Deputy Engineer Bodman that at the rate the streetcar company is relaying the tracks on Grand avenue it will not be possible to get the improvement completed this year. Chamber op Commerce Growing. The membership of the Chamber of Commerce is constantly Increasing. Matters in connection with the recent picnic were disposed of. In the absence of Miss Mary Chambers. Mrs. J. Collier acted in her stead as president. Thirty-five members were present. The Ladies Auxiliary is a branch of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and has a membership of 200. Thanks for lantern Slides. Acting Secretary Mosessohn of the Chamber of Commerce Is in receipt of a letter from P. B. S. Peters, director of the business course of the Manuel Training School of Kansas City, Mo., thanking the Portland Chamber of Commerce for several lantern slides Illustrating the City of Portland, which will be used In lectures delivered in Kansas City. St. Louis and other large Middle West cities. Japanese in Stabbing Apfrat. Harry Matto. a Japanese, became involved in a fight with some fellow countrymen at 27 North Second street about 10:30 o'clock last night and received a severe cut back of the left ear. He was taken to the police station by Patrolmen Harms and Anundsen and City Physician took four stitches In the cut and dressed the wound which' is not serious. Meeting of Travelling Newspaper Men. The Traveling Newspaper Men's Association of Washington and Oregon will meet in their first annual convention at Astoria, Or., August 25 and 26, in the interest of newspaper circulation. Dele gates will attend from Portland, Seattle, Tacoma and Spokane. . Intersection in Bad Condition. The south side of the intersection of Union avenue and East Burnside street causes trouble to nearly every team that passes that way. Seventeen teams have stalled on the Intersection within the past five days. The planks are broken and the wheels sink down. Take the A. & C. R. Interesting literature was sent all over the country by the promoters, and they are said to have reaped a harvest of fully $80,000 from the working people of the country. The men under indictment are: C. L. Blackman, A. E. Keables, R. C. Hunt, Arthur Levan, D. H. Lawrence, D. P. Pinkus and Edward Sebben, of Denver, and W. B. Cameron, of Boulder, and George S. and Lee Dubers, formerly of Sliver City, and now of Littleton. The trial is expected to develop some sensa ticmal testimony. The principal witness today was Charles Riddle Ford, a Government postofflce inspector. His testimony this afternoon indicated that George Dubois, the dis coverer of the alleged mine, had prac tically admitted to him that the whole scheme was a hoax worked up for the purpose of extracting money from the gullible. Seventeen fine pianos were sold the first day of the emergency sale of San Francisco pianos, leaving an exact one hundred instruments to be taken. Tues day's record will not be quite so large in numbers, but the sales were made up principally of the highest-priced in struments. . Several choice Deckers, three Schu mann, two Kimballs; one Checkering, two Webers, one Pianola Piano, and four pianos of less expensive makes were taken up to S o'clock in the after noon, one of them going to Salem and another to Tillamook. Eilers Piano House is doing exactly as advertised, each instrument is plain ly marked, and is offered and sold at the ratio of 57 cents on the dollar -making a $300 piano 171, a $400 piano, $218, and everything else at corre spondingly low prices. Moore, a prominent Walla Walla banker, is in Portland on a short visit. He says there is a very fine crop of wheat throughout the Walla Walla section. Company Declared Bankrupt. In response to the petition of creditors, who allege fraud on the part of the Eastern Candy Works in the effort to avoid its obligations, a receiver was ap pointed for the property, and the com pany declared bankrupt. R. L. Sabin I was named by Judge Wolverton of the Federal Court as receiver. The affairs of the company will be wound up as soon as possible and outstanding accounts settled. THE BLAME IS FIXED. Magnus, champion three-cushion bll llardist, in a Fifth-street billiard-hall last night won an exciting match with H. Solomon, a Portland expert, by the score of SO to 24. Both men were tied at 24, when Magnus .made a run of six and set tled the match. After the contest he ex hibited his skill with the cue by executing various difficult and fancy shots.
