13 THE MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, JULY 5, 1907. UPHOLDS HONOR OF NAVY Seaman From Charleston Whips Gang of Hoodlums. A gang of younsr hoodlums w'no sought to "lick" a seaman from the cruiser Charleston In a billiard room at Third and Morrison streets yester day at noon found more than their match In the plucky sailor. He stood his ground and fought a battle such as naa seldom been witnessed in Portland, and when he finished half a dozen alleged fighters were strewn bruised and bleeding about the floor. The sailor entered. the place on busi ness and was insulted by members of a gang of toughs who make the place their headquarters. He resented the Insult, and was attacked, whereupon he surprised the crowd by an exhibi tion of nerve and skill in handling himself that not only convinced the disinterested spectators that he was "all right," but that ended only when he had knocked out every member of the gang that sought to whip him. Policeman O'Brien was called in, but the row was over when he arrived. KISZTR FOK SOUVKMK PHOTO. Northwest Scenery Imperial Hotel. DAILI METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND, July 4.
