Yester- day afternoon tie officers and clerks in the different departments at the City Hall assembled in the Council Chamber, just befoie the time set for the Council meeting:, and formally presented Robert L. Withrow. the Evening Telegram- City Hall reporter, with a set of silver ware. The presentation was made by Auditor Thomas C. Devlin, who com mended the young man for his faithful work in the interest of his paper and the courtesy and consideration he had al ways shown the City Hall officials. Mr. Withrow was only recently married and the gift was offered as a wedding pres ent. Tt was accompanied by .the best wishes and congratulations of the donors. r.KCfciVER Sap News. Mrs. Leander Jlartln of this city received the sad news yesterday of the death Of her father, J. W. Foose. of Guthrie. Okla. Mr. Foose was 68 years old, a Civil War veteran, a prominent Mason and was for several years law librarian of Oklahoma, a position he still held at the time of his death. He leaves a wife and six chil dren, three sons and three daufihters; Seymour Foose. a prominent attorney and politician of Oklahoma: F. D. Foose, nf Chicago: E. K. Foose. of Kansas; Mrs. C. H. Mf-Eldowney. of Denver: Mrs. Ueander Martin, of Portland and Mrs. Addie Foose Homrighous, who will be remembered here as a popular Cotnmis sioner from Oklahoma at the Lewis and Clark Exposition. Hard Pavement for Street. Killings worth avenue Is to be improved with hard pavement between Union and Pat- t ton avenues, to cost according to the vj City Engineer s estimates. $69,412. While this has long been a residence district a considerable business center has neen built all around the carharns. On Kill Ingsworth avenue several .business build ings have been erected. This improve ment of Killfngsworth avenue is one of the accomplishments of the Nolta Ira provemeftt Association. It is important ' because it means an improved thorough fare all the way down the Peninsula to St. Johns. Patton avenue is to be Im proved to a connection with Dawson street, which Is now being Improved. Ai.bina Water Tower Removed. The wooden water tower in North Albina, f. which was part of the old Albina Water Company's plant, bas been torn down, service now being given by the new main from the Mount Tabor reservoir. The water tower at Highland also will be removed, as Its days of usefulness were over on completion of the Mount Tabor main. There Is not likely to be a short age at any point on the Peninsula this vear. A 12-Inch water main is being laid along Union avenue to Woodlawn and also east of Woodlawn to Columbia Heights, alj .connecting up with the large service main. Face Font. Problem.-At prevailing prices it will cost the taxpayers of the Portland district about $90,000 to provide the different school buildings with fuel for next year. Not only Is cordwswd, of which about 1S.0O0 cords are required an nually, selling for $5 a cord, but it is scarce at that figure. Very little of this fuel is being cut in the Valley ana the ji supply is dwindling. The board of di- rectors will advertise soon for cordwood for the ensuing school year and if the required amount Is not offered they may be obliged to use coal or oil. neither of which is cheaper than $5 cordwood. Peace Services at Beth Israel. The sermon at the regular weekly service at Temple Beth Israel will be on "Univer sal Peace." Service to begin at 8 o'clock tonight and at 10:30 tomorrow morning. On Sunday morning at 10:30 services will be held In celebration . of the Feast of Shibboleth. A special musical programme will be rendered by the choir, and Rabbi Jonah B. Wise will speak on the subject "The Day of the Law." Strangers wel come at all services. Purse for Sick Plumber. A commit tee of six members of the Plumbers' X'nlon No. 61 waited on the County Board of Relief yesterday, and secured an order for a charity railroad ticket for J. E. Klrkwood, a member of Salt Lake, Union No. 19. who has been confined in the County Hospital with consumption. The -Portland union have made up a purse for the unfortunate man, and are sending him to Phoenix. Ariz., where he hopes to regain his lost health. Poker Game Raipf.d. Policemen of the second relief raided a poker game in the basement of the Allsky building at Third and Harrison streets at " o'clock yester day morning, and in addition to confis cating tables, chairs and stacks of chips, arrested men who gave the names of Richard Miller, A. Johnson. D. Carr, H, Harris, O. Meyer. H. Williams and T. Thomas. None of them appeared in the Municipal Court and their bail was de clared forfeited. Miller Recaptured. A. J. Miller, who was recently arrested by Acting De tectives Mallett and Hill on a charge of larceny from the person, and who "walked right In and turned around and walked right out again" when left alone at police headquarters, was recaptured vesterdav bv Patrolman Ben Peterson, and is now locked securely within the city jail. Stahl, the latter one or the new officers, raided a gambling joint kept by E. D. Hamblett at 293 Alder street about 11 o'clock last night and ar rested the nronrietor and three players. The players gave their names as C. F. Lewis. T. Richards and T. Beacn, ana they were released on 2a ball eacn. aitxo Hit bt Car. A large Mitcneu automobile owned and driven by Will H. See was struck bv a streetcar Wednes day night at the corner of Twenty-first and Lovejoy streets. No one was in jured in the accident, but the machine was badly damaged. The front wheels were both broken, and the axle of the car was bent. Fine in Ai.iskt Bun.niNO. A careless ly thrown match ignited the curtains in one of the halls of the Alisky building at Third and Morrison streets about 11 o'clock last night, and was responsime for the calling out of the fire department. The blaze was quickly extlnguiahed and no material damage resuitea. Will, Address Mothers' Ci.ub. The Mount Tabor Mothers' and Teachers' Club will meet today at 3 P. M. in the West-avenue School. Death of Mrs. Jbnnib Smith. Mrs: Jennie Smith. formerly Miss Jennie Busey. ot Astoria, passed away yester day in Portland of peritonitis.
