Portland, 1. Brny Califf. the bridegroom, held a donation party yesterday afternoon and In spite of the fact that he ozoned seven of the invading army, he shoved his twisters down the groove bo nicely and evenly that In two innings the Seals had clouted his offerings for five bifflets, two of them good for extra cushions and netting in all five runs. Then Manager Mac chased him to the clubhouse and as he cantered into retirement Pat Donahue sagely remarked that Califf hadn't re covered the writer's cramp with which he was afflicted wfeile in the Southland. Anyway, young Sehimpft was sent to the mound, and in the two remaining innings, he did as pretty a bit ot Seal skinning as 'could be wished for. There was not anything much to the frame but the way in which Captain Mohler's hired men cottoned to oal'ff's banders in the fifth and seventh innings. Up to this stage it stood one all, for Portland rammed one home in the sec ond canto, with a two-ply awat by Mott and which was registered on a passed ball. The Seals got busy in the third and Bsalo's pass was presented for collec tion, when Mohler's slam to the left garden was juggled by Bassey just long enough to make him safe. After this, two spasms were rolled off without need of consulting the suicide doctor. A rapid-fire double-play from Shinn to Casey to Carson warned off trouble In the third, but in the fourth, Califf be came lavish and did a one-act free-transportation stunt and the tie-string was broken when Wheeler biffed a two-bagger to right, brought Hildebrand home under wraps. Pa Irwin planted one safe and AVhreler scored, making it 3 to 1. Runs Enough and to Spare. This would have been enough to have won. for Ashley's pitching flipper was earning his salary and he was keeping the binglets as scarce -svs roosters that lay eggs. Mott found him for two, Shinn for one and Carson for one. The rest of the locals drew blanks. Several times during the hour and 45 minutes of play, we had players knocking at the door, but it was not the season of Beaver-house building. In the sixth, just as things were look ing up and Bassey had drawn a walk, Mott lammed one to center. The curly headed Williams plucked the ball out of the atmosphere, heaved it to Street, doubling Bassey, who. thinking the swipe was safe, had ran Into second. In the ninth Mott's second safety made the fans coo for a moment, but the hope of a rally was blighted, for Donahue butted into a double from Mohler to Street and closed the game with a slam that hurt. With two down in the sixth, Hilde brand walked and Wheeler's wallop to right for two stations brought him home. Pa Irwin scored Wheeler with a single. In the seventh, with Williams in cold storage. Street biffed. Murphy followed suit and Esola trumped with a thump for two bases. McCredie retrieved the ball and in throwing It to second, pelted the Seal backstop in the floating kidney and while Shinn was scrambling for the ball Esola took third. He scored on a pretty double steal, in which Mohler, who had walked, started. Donahue's peg to second was just offside enough to make the score safe. This ended the lesson. Hawaiian Ladies' Day Pitcher. Today will be the first ladies' day of the season and the Seals will use Barney Joy. the Hawaiian, In the box. This Is the first year that the Sandwich Islander has lieen away from his home, but all base ball experts join in the statement that the Hawaiian Is a wonder. He has a good reputation for the games he has pitched this season, and no doubt will do good work today. The score: PORTLAND. AB. R. H. P.O. A. Well Oiose two high school teams, the East and West Side public institutions of learning, have teams that can put up the real gilt-edge variety of baseball. And the West Siders won. It was mean, too bad for the large number of East Side lads and lassies who crossed the river, with the expectation that their team would do up that older Institution. But the East Side boys put up a good game, far better than the ma jority of the followers of the games ex pected. The East Side High School started off poorly this season. At first nobody thought that the players would have a chance In the pennant race. But they surprised their, opponents, and have shown everybody that they can play ball. The East Siders made a good beginning yesterday. In the second Inning they chased a man over the pan, "and turned the same trick In the third. But that was all. and while men reached third base in later Innings, yet no one was able to score. West Side High School made' four runs in the third, and another in the sixth. Bunched hits and several bad miscues on the part of the East Siders were responsible for the runs. The score was: EAST BIDE. AB. R. IB PO. 0 ft lO 1 . 2 8 2 1 ft Cornell, ss Hedges.
