Company Claims Road Is Difficult to Maintain in Good Condition Without More Compensation. OREGON CITY. Or., May 6. (Special.) Residents of Portland and other Oreson towns and owners of automobiles who de light In a journey to Mount Hood during the Summer will And the expense some what greater than In previous years, as the Clackamas County Court has just granted the petition of the Mount Hood & Barlow Road Company for an Increase in the tolls, and has permitted the com pany to establish another sate at the Salmon River. This change will also , affect stockmen. The rate of toll over and across the road for either the old Barlow route terminating at Gate Creek, or the Oak Grove route terminating at Oak Grove, has not been changed, and follows: Each automobile J2.50 Each four-wheel vehicle, two horses... 2-.V1 Ea.ch additional span or yoke 50 Each two or four-wheel vehicle, one horse If Earn .addle horse with rider 75 Each horse or mule with pack 40 Each horse or mule, loose 20 Each head of cattle, loose 15 Each head of sheep, goats or hogs 03 It is stated by the officials of the com pany that the distance from the western termines of Its road to Mount Hood and the cost of construction represents one half of the cost ' of construction of the whole thoroughfare and is about one half of the distance in length of the whole road, and Is more expensive to operate and maintain. The rates of toll from the western terminus to points in the vidinity of Mount Hood are fixed at one full toll for the round trip. The company says It Is a hardship to main tain the bridge over Salmon River and its road from Salmon River to the toll gate for the accommodation of touriBts and others without compensation. EUGENE, Or.. May 5. (Special.) The farmer is not the only man here who is wishing for rain. The merchant, whose Mock has been soiled and whose customer lias been aggravated by the useless clouds of dust arising from the main streets of the city during the past few days, will welcome the rain as much as anybody. What is more beautiful than a well-lighted residence lo cality? Only one thing, and that is a well-lighted home. In the evening. Rose City Park homes will be so well lighted as to present a most brilliant and cheerful aspect. From every window and door will be seen the bright illumi nation that has been prom ised by the electric light company. There is no immediate prospect of any other kind of a street-sprinkler. For the past Summer seasons the cost of sprinkling the streets in the business section has been paid by the business men. But last year several refused to pay, and the man on the water wagon lost money on the job. This season the cost for sprinkling must be increased un less all interested help pay the bill. With this prospect the Merchants' Pro tective Association petitioned the Council to have the city pay for the sprinkling. The City Attorney decided it would be unconstitutional to pass such an ordi nance. Th merchants then asked that the cost be assessed to the property owners, and the Council is expected daily to meet and settle the question. Meantime storekeepers are closing their doors, covering their stocks and berating the citizens who refuse to pay for com fort and protection from dust, which has made a dry town too uncomfortable for anybody. Death From Accidental Poisoning. ASTORIA, Or., May 5. (Special.) Inez Jennie Peterson, the 214-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Peterson, of Tenas Illlhee Island, died very sudden ly yesterday afternoon from accidental poisoning. The child climbed upon a chair and secured some pills containing strychnine, which were on a shelf, and died a few minutes after eating them. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND, May 5. The pressure has fallen generally through out the North Pacific States and risen over California. Light rain has fallen In Utah and Nevada and the weather Is unsettled and threatening In Northern California. No rain has fallen In the North Pacific 8tatea, and the temperature has remained nearly stationary. The Indications are for showers In this district 'Monday with lower temperatures. WEATHER FORECASTS. Portland and vicinity Showers and cool er; southerly winds. Electric lights will be available in Rose City Park as soon as your home is built.
