THE MORM5G OHEGOMAX, SATURDAY. APRIL, 13, 1907. BEAVERS BRACE UP AND TAKE ft GAME McCredie Slides Home in the Twelfth and Wins by a Score of 2 to 1. GROOM'S FINE SLAB WORK Shots Out Seals for Eleven Hounds and Outfielders Give Him Splen did Support MeCredie's Run Greatly Inspires His Men. SAN PTlAXCieCO. April 12. (Special.) Portland got away with the first extra Inning game of the season here this after noon In sensational style. With the score one all in the twelfth inning and one gone, McCredie got a pass. He promptly stole second and a moment later Staton shot a hot grounder at Irwin. The ball bound ed into the air and out to left field. Mc Credie saw there wan a chance and raced for the plate. Hlldebrand picked up the ball and hurled It quickly, but not quick enough to nail the Beaver leader, who slid Ave feet In order to bring the win ning run across. The sight of that tally seemed to in spire the Seals. Irwin opened up their final round with a double to left and Wheeler got a pass. Murphy's sacrifice advanced both men and Ksola drew a pass with the bases full and but one out. Street batting for Busher Hoag fouled out to Kane. Spencer ended the game by flying to short. Both Groom and Hoag pitched fine ball, but the former had a little the better of It, keeping the Seals away from the pan for 15 innings. He had speed, control and the fadeaway ball In every round, and his fielders supported him in magnificent style. Spectacular plays by the outfield ers and infielders of both teams had the attention of the fans throughout. The score : PORTLAND. AB. R. BH. PO. A. E. PLAY RATTLING GOOD GAME WEST SIDE HIGH DEFEATS CO LUMBIA 1 to 0. University Pitcher Does Great Work, but" His Teammates Are Unable to Prevent a Shutout. In one of the closest amateur games of baseball seen in this city for a long time, the West Side High School met and de feated the crack Columbia University team 1 to 0. The game was a pitchers' battle throughout, and Locke, the Colum bia twirler. had the best of It. But for an error In the first Inning, Columbia might have won. but with the score against them, the collegians could not pull out of the hole. In the first inning Moore, of the high school, opened with a two-bagger, and this was followed by another hit by Hughes. Newel sacrificed, and Hughes advanced to second. Oakes hit a swift one to Locke, and the pitcher was unable to handle It. Moore then scored, but that was the end of the game for the high school. After the first inning, locke set tled down and allowed one other hit. In the fourth Columbia managed to fill the bases, but the side was retired without a score. Locke struck out seven men. MEDICAL MEN DISAGREED DIFFERENT OPINIONS EXIST AS TO COOPER'S SUCCESS. Numbers Are Inclined to Give Young Man Credit Others Call Him a Fad. ST. LOUIS. April 12.-The astonishing sale of Cooper's preparations in this city has now reached such Immense figures that the medical fraternity at large have become forced into open discussion of the man and his preparations. ..The physicians as a whole seem to be divided with regard to the young man s success in St. Louis some being willing to credit him for what he has accomplish ed, while others assert that the interest he nas aroused is but a passing fad which cannot last, and which will die out as Quickly as it has sprung up. The opinion of these two factions is Very well Voiced in the statements made recently by two of a number of phvslcians who were interviewed on the subiect. Dr. J. E. Carass, when questioned about the matter, said: "I have not been a be liever in proprietary preparations here tofore, nor can I say that I believe In them at present. But I must admit that some or the facts recently brought to mv no tice concerning this man Cooper have gone far towards removing the prejudice 1 had formed against him when the un heard of demand for the preparations first sprang up in this city. "Numbers of my patients whom I have treated for chronic liver, kidney and stom ach troubles have met me after taking cooper a remedies, and have stated posi tively that he has accomplished wonder ful results for them. I notice particu larly In cases of stomach trouble that the man has relieved several cases that were of years' standing and proved verv ob stinate in treatment. "I am the last man on earth to stand in the way of anything that mav prove for the public good simplv through pro fessional prejudice and I am inclined to give Cooper and liis preparations credit as deserving to some extent the popular demonstration that has been accorded them in this city." Another well known phvsician who was seen, took the opposite view of the "Cooper-mania." as he called it. which now has this city in Its grip. He said: I can only liken the present state of af fairs to a certain kind of hallucination. For want of a better name I might call it 'Cooper-mania.' The people of St. Ixuis seem to be firm in the belief that this man Cooper has health corked up in a bottle. "Some of them imagine that he has completely cured them of various ills, judging from their statements. It is be yond me to say w'iy the cltv has gone crazy over the man It may be safely put down. I think, to one of the passing" fads that so often attack the American public. "Sooner or later the people are bound to regain their senses, and will then real ize that a reputable physician is the one to whom their health had best be en trusted." In the meantime Cooper meets several thousand people daily, and onlr smiles when statements of the above character1 are quoted to him. His charitable work still continues to be very extensive. Ethe!
