LANE MAY NOT RUN AT ALL Friends Say Ho Declared He Would Sot Enter Race Without Dem ocratic Nomination Re publicans Active. Unless the plans of the anti-Lane fac tion In the Iemocra.tlo party miscarry, i. H. Thomas, chairman of the Demo cratic County Central Committee, will be their candidate for Democratic Mayor. Among the members of the dissatisfied -n-inff of the local Democratic party dis satisfied with the methods of Mayor Lane in the conduct of his office there ts a strong Thomas feeling, and those of the leaders who believe' that a Democrat in office should look after the memberB of tlie party when it comes to dealing out patronage have lined up for the Demo cratic chairman. Whether their hopes and ambitions will be realized will depend upon the big meeting that will take place tonight at Drew Hall, when Mayor Lane's two letters will be read and placed before the meeting for final consideration. At the same gathering will be handed in the names of the other Democratic candidates for municipal offices. To that wing of the Democratic party the leaders who took an Important hand In defeating Tom Word for Sheriff there is a belief that Mayor Lane, In spite of his declaration that he reserves the right to place the matter of his election to the mipreme test of the people, will not come out as an Independent candidate. A num ber of Democrats who profess to speak ty the board say they have Mayor Lane's promise that, unless ho should receive the Democratic nomination at the primaries, he would not under any consideration make the race. These men are banking tn this promise, and have turned to Chair man Thomas as the MoBes who will lead them out of the Democratic wilderness. One thing Is sure, fiose friends of Thomas' who are flghtins Lane will try tonight to make Thomas the standard bearer In the coming campaign. Thomas Willing to Run. The Democratic chairman, while It must be admitted he is not turning down over tures and proffers of the candidacy, has been discreet enough to remain silent, yet It Is evident that, like Barkis, be Is will ing. Among the wise and the near wise In the Democratic fold there was lots of talk over Mayor Lane's letter. To those who are satisfied with Lane's adminis trationthose who finish all arguments by saying "Well, anyway, the little doctor Is honest" the general impression Is that by his letter to Chairman Thomas, Lane has forced the hand not only of Chairman Thomas, but also of those who are fight ing him, and that in the end Lana. will receive the Democratic nomination In spite of the fight that Is being made on him by the minority wing of the party. One Democratic leader snld yesterday, and he laughed out loud when he ald it, "Talk of Roosevelt being a smooth letter writer well, he hasn't any on Harry Ine. He knows how to use the King's Kngllsh. and unloss I mistake my reading, the little treat that letter contained that part of it in which he says he reserves the right to put it to the people is a snapper to a whip that has never been cracked over the Democrats in Portland since I've been here, and tt takes two figures to compute those years." In the meantime. Mayor Lane smiles end says nothing. Testerday he re fused to talk of his Intentions, or of Iho letter. He still clings to his loved Biblical quotations, but at the same time he acts and smiles like a man who knows, but Is not telling anybody. If he has a petition In circulation, only the faithful have seen It. One thing Is sure, the petition has not been floating around among those who would say no. However, there Is no indecent hurry about this, for Ms honor bus four weeks In which to get the signers to his petition. Republicans Are Busy. While the Democrats are waiting for eomeone to touch off the fuse, the Itepublicans are busy. Testerday J. K. Booths, who succeeded W. T. Mas ters ns Councilman from the Fifth Ward, filed bis petition. This will make three Republicans from the Fifth Ward who want to lie in the City Council. The others are W. C. Fuffer and Dr. W. I. Cottell. Each of these candidates will have a chance to speak his piece at the big rally to be lipid at Artisan Hall Wednesday, April 10. The South Portland Republican Club will hold another of Its meetings, and the principal speaker on this oc casion will be Dan Kellaher. candi dates for Mayor. There will be plenty of good cigars to smoke and good music, and President Lillls promises an evening's good entertainment. There was a rumor on the streets yesterday that Colonel Charles E. Mc Donoll was out of the Mayoralty race. That Colonel McDonell Is regarded a factor to be reckoned with In the com ing primaries was evidenced by the significance attached to this rumor, for if ha were to withdraw this would leave the fight bstween John B. Coffey, Thomas Devlin and L. Zimmerman. Colonel McDonell. however, had some thing to say about his withdrawal, and he delcnred last night that the rumor was without foundation. "I have no Intention at this time to quit the field." said Colonel McDonell. "There Is lots of time yet. Of course, some people arc bothering themselves about whether I will be a candidate or not. 1 am not a bit worried." John Ditchburn, who has been boomed for Municipal Judge, has de clsred himself out of the race. This announcement was mad- yesterday. KBW KDICT ON REGISTRATION County Clerks Ofrice Lays Down the Law to Voters. Voters who have not registered, or who have changed tholr place of resi dence since last election, are entitled to register again. But new registrations will not be made simply to establish changes in party affiliation. This is the edict of the County Clerk's office, given In ac cordance with an opinion on the subject rendered) by Attorney-General Crawford. The few voters who have gone to the Courthouse to secure new registration cards on the grounds of a change in political convictions have found them selves barred. While there is no law bearing on the subject. Mr. Crawford gives It as his opinion that registrations of this Vlass would do nothing more than precipitate endless confusion. ROOM ITEMS. OTHERS MAY BE INVOLVED Testimony Indicates That Worthless Securities Sold by the Defend ant Were Not Forged by His Own Hand. W. H. Taft, real estate dealer, note broker and alleged forger, was placed on trial in the State Circuit Court yesterday on a charge of negotiating worthless paper. Taft has been awaiting trial for three months, during which time he has been confined in the county Jail. It is said his defense has been prepared with great care and that a stubborn fight will be made to save him from the peniten tiary. It has been intimated since Taffs ar rest that the names of others are to figure unpleasantly in the case. Yesterday the testimony connected J. H. Diets, real estate man and former partner of Taft, with the case. Max G. Cohen said on croBS-examinatlon. that he had carefully examined the forged securities sold by the prisoner and that one of the signatures, In his opinion, was from Dletz pen. The day was taken up with testimony for the prosecution and the statement made by Cohen followed bis examination by District Attorney Manning, who Is conducting the prosecution with the aid of Deputy District Attorney Moser. The day's testimony served to establish that worthless notes were Issued by Taft and that Dr. George D. Peters was swindled , out of $176 through one of these trans l actions. Whether any additional arrests are to be made as an outcome of the trial. Dis trict Attorney Manning was unable to say last night. He said, however. If there Is any material evidence furnished to show the connection of others with the affair, action may be taken looking to their prosecution. The taking of testimony will be renewed today. It Is hoped to have the case in the hands of the Jury by night. Taffs in terests are being looked after by McGarry & Clarke. JCIIOR'S JOKE A BOOMERANG Causes Court to Refuse Jury's Ap plication for Discharge. A Circuit Court Jury spent all of yes terday afternoon and part of last night at the Courthouse because one of the Jurors Insisted on a little Joke with the court, when the Jury was about to be dismissed. The 12 men were trying the case of Lloyd Burtls. charged with contributing to the delinquency of Kmma Mevls, 15 years old. The case went to the Jury In tho forenoon and at 4 P. M. Judge Frazer was called on for additional Instructions. He was advised, when the Jury filed into court, that a deadlock was on and that the probability of a verdict seemed very small. "Possibly you have been here long enough." suggested Judge Frazer. "That's right let the next Jury that tries the case stay with it all night," spoke up Juror Thuman. "You might Just as well stay all night as the next Jury," retorted Judge Frazer, and the 15 men were shown back to the Jury-room to mak,o a new attempt to reach a verdict. BROTHER MAY ASSIST HIM S. F. Killdall Has Hopes of Securing S500O Bail. Simon F. Killdall may yet fail to go to Alaska in the custody of a United States Marshal. Efforts are being made by his friends In this city to secure bail In the sum of 15000 for his appearance in Alaska at tha November term of the Federal Court. Friends wired his brother in Minne apolis last night to arrange for the bail there and wire bonds to the authorities here at the earliest moment. This may be done, as Killdall's brother In Min neapolis Is amply able to furnish the bonds required for his brother's release: and the fact that Simon Killdall was serving the company of which his Minne apolis brother is the president when he got into trouble, would indicate that the bonds will be forthcoming. Simon F. KUldall is not in the Mult nomah County Jail, but Is In the custody of a Deputy United States Marshal In pleasanter quarters. KUldall expects to hear from his brother today. Meyendorff, Special Agent of the General Land Office, arrived in Portland from San Francisco, yesterday. Mr. Mey endorff went to California early last Winter to look up evidence in land fraud cases, it is presumed, in connection with the famous Hyde-Benson case. Mr. Mey endorff will Join the staff of Government agents in Portland, who are now busily engaged 1n collecting evidence to .be used in the trials of approaching cases of land fraud in this state.
