1 TIIE MORNING OREGONIAN. MONDAY, AUGUST 13. 1906. 10 HIE. COREY MAN OF HO CULTURE Rev. G. E. Hawes, of Brad dock, Pa., Tells Story of Steel King's Life, BECOMES RICH SUDDENLY piscards "Wife of Poorer Days for Actress Scandal, Separation and Divorce Follow His Meteoric Rise. "W. E. Corey, while unquestionably a leader among men and the possessor o much business foresight and sagacity, has not even a common-school education, and Is anything but attractive. He is a man of very ordinary personality, and those who meet him are not impressed with his Intellectuality. He is utterly lacking in magnetism such as la found in most men of affairs, but he is a good business man. His greatest attraction is his money, if Ithat can be termed an attraction." Such Is an estimate of the character or the president of the United States Steel Corporation whose name Is familiar to nearly every man, woman and child in the United States, by Rev. George E. Hawes. of Braddock. Pa., who arrived In Portland Saturday. Braddock is the home town of Corey, where his parents now re Bide. Dr. Hawes is occupying the pulpit f the United Presbyterian Church dur ing the absence of Rev. A. W. Wilson, who is taking a few weeks' rest. Dr. Hawes had charge of this church eight years ago, and is now pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church at Braddock. Dr. Hawes has met Corey and Is ac quainted with many relatives and friends of the steel king. According to Dr. Hawes, Corey, who lias figured so prominently in the recent divorce scandal after deserting his wife for an actress, is of the aggressive type. His advance in the business world was very rapid, exceptionally rapid, in fact, as only a few years ago he was worth nothing, while now he has millions. As soon as he obtained wealth and affluence he began to spend his money and to en Joy himself In the same aggressive man ner that made his fortune, forgetting his wife, who was of a domestic disposition, and for whom the gay "butterfly" life had no attractions, Corey Unpromising as Young Man. "When a, young man Corey was very unpromising, and it seemed as if he were destined to lead a commonplace existence. Not one person In a thousand would pick him out as a leader of men, but that is what he is today. About 15 years ago the owner of a grocery store refused to give him a position as clerk at $50 a month simply because he believed he was not capable. "Then he started In to learn the steel business. He worked from the very bot tom to the top, and knows the business from beginning to end. That is one of the reasons why he Is so valuable an ad junct to the steel trust. The opportunity presented itself, and he took advantage of it. He developed into a man who could handle other men, and this is one of the things that brought him success. In most men this power is born, but with him it was cultivated. "Carnegie took a fancy to him and made him immensely rich. The change was too sudden for him and it turned his head. Money came easily and it got the best of him. He had.no social or in tellectual training and the only way he knew to dispose of his income was to revel in luxuries. His money attract ed to him. actresses and others who were after his money. He acted much like a tramp who has fallen heir t6 a fortune and who spends it all foolishly, except that Corey has so much that it is all but Impossible for him to get rid of it through high living. While he dissipates he always keeps an eye on his business Interests. In business dealings I understand that he is very cold-blooded. "He is like many of the other Pitts burg millionaires who became - sud denly rich and as a result lost their heads. They had been very poor and when money began to pour down on them In a golden shower they com menced to spend It like so much water. . Old Story, Oft Repeated. The story- of Corey and his wife is an old one. Many other millionaires have discarded their wives. When she married the steel magnate Mrs. Corey had a better social standing than he She was anxious for her husband to make a success and worked hard. She stayed at home, tended her domestic duties and was not socially inclined. When Corey got rich and his money gathered around him a swarm of beau tiful women he no longer cared for his simple but devoted wife. He wanted someone gay and young and his ag gressiveness got away with his better sense . "I know the parents of Corey and they are very simple and ordinary people. His father Is the tax collector at Braddock and lives the same simple life that he did years ago. His father and mother sided with the wife and did all they could to prevent a separa tion. "Most of those at the head of the steel Industry are comparatively young men who have developed remarkable business ability. They are known as Carnegie's 'young men.' They know the practical end of the business. It is al most impossible for college-bred men to get employment If Corey and some of the others can prevent it. I refer to collepre men who gradute from class ical institutions. With men of technical training it Is different. "The story Is told of two young men Just from college who applied for posi tions. They were refused work because it was learned that they had been to college. The boys were undaunted and donned overalls. They came back a few days later dressed in overalls and when applying for positions murdered the Knjriish language. They got the Jobs which had been refused them In the first place." WANT AN ELECTRIC ROAD rcoplo of Thickly-Settled District Lack Rapid Transportation. Farmers along and east of the South ern Pacific Railway between Willsburg and Oregon City, including Mlnthorne, at Milwaukle, Harmony. Clackamas and Gladstone, are watching the various elec tric railway movements In the hope that some of these enterprises will not over look that rich district. They have a complete organization, or rather series of organizations, at those centers along this route, ready to assist any company which will build them an electric railway to Portland. Further more, In the hands of C. F. Clark, who has worked in and put of season, living at Clackamas, is a mass of statistics showing the probable passenger and freight traffic of such a railway. These figures were carefully gathered over every IMPE SMYRNA RUGS IMPERIAL Smyrna Rugs meet every idea of the housekeeper. "I cannot understand," said Mr. Clark yesterday, "why the companies now pro posing to build to Portland from the "Willamette Valley have overlooked this rich route, which is wholly unoccupied, when our statistics show such invest ment would pay Immediately on comple tion of the line. I recently attended a railroad meeting at Harmony and 200 farmers were present. They were then ready, and are still ready, to make rea sonable concessions.
