Sale Read This List of Women's Homespun Suits HAS DEFIED ALL INTRUDERS Friday, July 27 ains s narg One Militiaman and One Dietz Boy Wounded In Fusillade Climax of Two Tears' Resistance to Logging Company. MILWAUKEE, Wis., July 26. (Spe cial.) Dispatches received tonight re port the capture of Joan Dietz, the homesteader, who has held the Cameron dam on Thornapple River, In Sawyer County, against the combined power of the Mississippi Logging Company, the state and Federal Governments for the last two years. The stories are con flicting, but all agree that a sharp bat tle took place today at the Dietz home between Dietz and his family on the one side and Sheriff Gylland and a posse of half a dozen militiamen on the other. Sheriff's Ambiguous Message. One of the Sheriff's men was shot three times and seriously, though not fatally wounded, and Clarence D'.ets, a son of the doughty homesteader, was shot through the head. A message from Hayward says the Sheriff telegraphed that he had a hard battle and ended by saying that he would return "as Boon as he could get his man out." This is taken by some to mean Dietz and by others to mean the wounded deputy. Dietz Family in Battle. One account of the battle is that as soon as the Sheriff and posse came In sight of the Dietz cabin, Dietz, his wife, two sons and one daughter, came out armed with rifles. After the first volley from the Diets side, one of the militia men fell, wounded, bullets having struck him In the ankle, hip and neck. The fusillade was returned by the mi litiamen and, when the smoke had cleared away. It was seen that Clarence Dietz had fallen. Then the posse retired behind stumps and trees and for over an hour the battle lasted. Fully 153 shots were tired. When It was seen that Dietz was deter mined not to give up, the Sheriff and his posse retired to the Mississippi River Log ging Company's camp at Cameron dam, half a mile from Dietz' cabin. There they prepared for a second attack, which, it is said, was successful. Held tlie Fort Two Years. Dietz has stopped all lumbering on the Thornapple River for the last two years. He held that the logging company had no right to run logs through his farm unless It paid for the privilege. He demanded $10,000 and the company laughed at him. It proceeded with the usual drive and brought down 20,000.000 feet of logs to the Cameron dam. There the men found Dietz fortified. He notified the foreman that, if an attempt was made to open the sluiceways and run the logs, he would open lire. As he is a dead shot with a rifle, no one was Inclined to take the Job. No Power Could Move Him. Arguments, threats and coaxing all fell on deaf ears. There Dietz stood until to day, and he may still be etanding thete, gaunt, grim and defiant, one nervy man contending for his rights against any force' that may be sent against him. Sheriffs have tried to get him. United States Marshals have tried to serve papers on him; all sorts of devices have been tried, but no service has been made. Part of his tttrength came from the friendship f his ' neighbors for miles in every di rection, who warned him of approaching -enemies. LETS THAW HAVE HIS WAY His Mother Drops Lunacy Commis sion Scheme Olcott to Help. ' NEW YORK, July 26. It was reiter ated tonight that the proposition to make an attempt to secure a lunacy commission to adjudge Thaw insane had been dropped even by counsel re tained by Mrs. William Thaw. It is un derstood that the counsel, consisting of William K. Olcott and Terence J. Mc ManuB, have decided that such a mo tion would meet with ultimate defeat and therefore ,t has been eliminated. Thaw will be allowed to go to trial as he desires. The emotional insanity plea will be offered by Cliirord w. Hartrldge, the personal counsel of Harry Thaw. Judge Olcott, it Is understood, is re tained by Mrs. Wiliam Thaw, mother of the prisoner, to look out lor young Thaw's interests, not In the way of any action on his part, but to aid in every bit of evidence he can secure. TWO WOMEN KISS AND MAKE CP Thaw's Jlother and Wife Again on . , Friendly Terms. NEW YORK, July 26.A.n affectionate scene in which Mrs. William Thaw, her daughter, Mrs. George L. Carnegie, and Harry K. Thaw's wife participated. took place at the Tombs Prison today while the three women -were paying-a visit to Harry K. Thaw. Thaw's wife had been with him half an hour when his mother and sister arrived. The young wife and the prisoner's mother kissed each other several times. On leaving the Tombs the three women drove to the office of Clifford W. Hartridpe. who has charge of Thaw's defense. Mrs. Evelyn Nesfolt Thaw said: . "Everything Is all right now." Chauffeur to Prove Insanity. MTPDLETOWN, N. Y-. July 26. De tectives thought to be representing the law firm of Black, Olcott. Gruber Bonynge, of New York, were here yes terday, making an effort to locate Her bert Francis, an English chauffeur, who was employed for more than a year by Harry K. Thaw. For several months Francis was employed as chauffeur by George N. Clemson, of this place, but loft here a few weeks ago. He Is now believed to be at Pomfret, Conn. Thaw's mother, it is claimed, hopes to prove by Francis that Thaw acted irrationally on various occasions while the chauffeur was in this country. Divorce Suits at Oregon City. OREGON CITY, Or., July 26. (Special.) Nora Collins, who was married to Ed win Collins In Columbia County, In 1S91, today filed divorce proceedings, alleging desertion in 1902. She asks for the cus tody of two minor children and the right to resume her maiden name. Nora Bacon. Edmund W. Clark charges Georgina M. Clark with desertion in June, 1905.
