EXAMINATION OP WISCONSIN LUMBERMEN BEGUN. James and Benjamin Doughty Say They Had Nothing to Do With Land Described in. Indictment. OSHKOS1I. Wis., May 31. (Special.) The examination of Leander Choate, James Doughty, Benjamin Doughty, Thomas Doly and James M. Bray, charged with alleged land frauds in Ore gon, took place In this city today, in the Federal Court. United States Officer Mc Donald Is in charge, and Messrs. . Reid and Kenning, of Milwaukee, are present In the interest of the Government. The defense is being looked after by Judge C. D. Cleveland, of Oshkosh, assisted by A. K. Thompson. This morning the examination began at 10 o'clock, and James and Benjamin Doughty were examined. Both of these lumbermen denied all charges contained in the indictment and stated that they had had no timber deals in Oregon since 1902, and that they have had nothing to do with the purchase or sale of lands de scribed in the indictment. Mr. Doughty stated that -"e company they represented had not employed Mr. Black, of Shawano, or any Oregon peo ple, in the purchase or sale of lands, and that they had never intended to defraud the Government in any of their deals. All the men mentioned in the Indictment were present in court, excepting James M. Bray, who is a paralytic, and is confined to his home. Judge Cleveland explained to the court the absence of Mr. Bray, and it was agreed that it would be impossible to in clude him in the court examination. At torney A. S. Larson, of Shawano, was present at the examination, in the inter est of three Shawano men Included in the indictment. Their examination will not occur for a week or so. Deadly Effect of Wood Alcohol. RAWLINS, Wyo.. May 31. William Wardlow and Jesse Keating, convicts, died at the State penitentiary here yes terday from the effects of drinking wood alcohol. They were workers in the broom factory, where shellac varnish is used in finishing the handles. They secured the varnish bottle, and allowing the shellac to settle, drank the wood alcohol, which Is used to cut the shellac. Both died In horrible convulsions, having first become totally blind from the effects of the drug. At death the entire surface of the body was as black as shoe leather. Two other convicts drank the alcohol also, but as they had indulged less freely, were saved. DENY THEY BOUGHT TITLE Mrs. Magee Paid Austrian Baron Nothing to Wed Niece. PITTSBURG. May 31. Because of a statement that has been published about the country that Baron Riedl, who is to marry Louise Magee, niece and ward of the late Senator Chris L. Magee, had de manded a dowry of $100,000, much un pleasant notoriety has resulted, and today the family of the late Senator caused to be given out a denial that any such de mand was ever made. It was also stated that Mrs. Magee would under no circum stances consent to the payment of a mar riage portion, were such a thing possible, as it would be at variance to her princi ples. The payment of a dowry, however, is made impossible for the reason that the Magee estate was left in trust by the Senator at Mrs. Magee' s suggestion. Miner Killed ,by Cave-In. BAKER CITY.
