12 THE MORNING OREGOXIAX, TUESDAY, MAY 15, 1906. FLAX AS AN EXHIBIT One 'of the Great Industries of Oregon. CHANCE FOR ALL IS GIVEN Obf-cure Manufacturer Is Given Op portunity Along AVith the One AY ho Has Achieved Marked Results In This State. . One of the molt interesting exhibit among the many tlat will be seen in the show-window exhibition o Oregon-made good will be rhe attempt to illustrate the flax Industry. The matter has been pro posed by resident of the Willamette Val ley. It Is a subject In which considerable interest Is felt by the Southern Pacific Hail road, and yesterday District Freight Agent Ixmnsbury took up the matter with the Made-ln-Oregon. committee and made arrangements for a corner of Mo Allen & McDonnell's store. If all the requisites for displaying the flax product from its raw state in the Held to the fin ished linens for domestic use can be had within the next few days, a remarkably interesting exhibit will be made. Pri marily, this is one of the objects of the enterprise which was enthusiastically taken up by the promoters at large throughout the state 4o exploit the vari ous lndutries which Oregon affords. Mr. I.ounsbury went to Salem and other Val ley points last night, and will endeavor to complete the arrangements for sending down samples of this product today. Will lie Fine Display. The committee on window spaces has covered a considerable portion of Uie downtown district and reports that there l. a general preparation going forward in all the stores for displaying Oregon prod ucts, to the exclusion of all else. Dis plays are to be made by firms and manu facturers of home products that are mak ing a bid for local attention, In windows other than those that hae been turned over to the disposal of the committee. AVhile some dealers realize the incongru ity of appearances and cheerfully consent to the outside lines taking a place in the stores, others are Inclined to conservative views. An Interesting feature in connec tion with the proposition is the manner 1n which dealers in strongly competitive lines agree to give the obscure maker of goods a chance to benefit by valuable ad vertising space. Secretary Freeman's Report. Regarding the prospects for the display in general. Secretary Freeman said: "It develops, as the late returns from manufacturers come In, that there are many of the unheard-of 'little fellows' who will share in the great benefits of this movement at the expense of larger concerns and some practical monopolies. The" window-space committee has been satisfied to get the assent of the mer chants that they will display Oregon made goods In all of the windows, whether the merchants accept the material offered to the committee or not. I am frank to say that there have. been two notable ex ceptions in the down-town district, where dealers having prominent store fronts have absolutely backed down on the Bgreement to receive the committee's ex hibit, and, we find, have made their agreements on the outside to give their Hpace to concerns that have not taken the trouble to acknowledge the invitation sent them by the general organization to par ticipate with an advertising float or an exhibit. While this Is perfectly agreeable to every one concerned in the movement, at the same time it places the exhibits committee, of which Mr. Keim Is the en ergetic head, In a somewhat embarrassing position. Adjust Small Difficulties. These trifling difficulties are being pro vided against rapidly and satisfactorily. Delay In notifying the waiting manufac turers of their locations is due to this caue. and to no other. In The Sunday Oregonlan was related what some of the best-known merchants In the 'hlgh'rent' district had done, and I desire to say that two notable additions to this list of generous-minded men have been made. For instance, the Allen & Gilbert house ac cepts ornamental brick, stoneware and pottery, musical Instruments and furni ture, while Mr. Selling's window-dressing department has to do the best it can with Salem baking powder and Corvallls wash ing machines. Previous to the late dis aster in California, there were a great many more manufacturers planning ex hibits, and it is but just to state that since the catastrophe these plans In sev eral instances, principally out-of-town concerns, have been modified or aban doned. Altogether, however, the move ment has obtained extraordinary prestige throughout the entire Pacific Northwest, and much good will be accomplished by the enterprise. Irrespective of the specific results which can be named." The balloting on the beauty contest for tjueen of Industry and Columbia will be gin today, and the result will be made known to the aspirants by tomorrow through the newspapers. Cannot Spend Mount Pelee Itind. XHW YORK. May 14. Mayor MrClellan. after looking up the law. says that It will 'require a constitutional amendment to permit the city to spend the money raised to aid the ssifTerers In the Mount Pelee dis aster. About M400 was sent In. and the names of the subscribers are lost. As all the people near Mount Pelee were killed, and there was no call for the money, it was not sent forward. Money in the cus tody of the city to be spent for a specific purpose cannot be spent for anything else. The money was raised about four years hk when Mayor Low was at the City Mall, and some one lost the names of the givers. It has been on deposit for the last four years, and is drawing Interest at 2 per cent.
