THE XORXiyG OREGOXIAy, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 23, 105. 13 FARMERS HOLD ON Year-End Sales in Wheat Mar ket Are Light. MORE CALIFORNIA INQUIRY Trade Jn Barley, Oats and Flour Is Quieter Crop Conditions in For eign Exporting Countries. Big Holiday Demand. "WHEAT Expected selling .movement doe not materialize. FLOUR Oriental demand light, HOPS Full price being paid In coun try. POULTRY Steady movement In tur keys at unchanged prices.' . EGGS Market overstocked, 'alow and lower. BUTTER Active movement at fairly firm price. VEGETABLES California produce cleans up. The wheat market Is still dragging;. Dealers rather expected that there would be eomcthlng of a selling spurt about this time by farmers who would want to close up their accounts with banks before the turn of the year, but so far it has not materialized. Holders arc evi dently in good enough financial shape to keep possession of their crops until they get ready to sell, and an uninteresting market in there fore looked for during the remainder of the season. It is estimated that fully 75 per cent of the Northwestern crop has been disposed of, arid the remaining 25 per cent will doubtless be worked off gradually. Export prices are entirely nominal 'in the absence ot foreign business. A moderate amount of trading on California account is again reported. Both oatrt and barley arc quiet now, but prices hold to a very steady basis. The ex port flour market is very slow at the moment. Some inquiries as to prices are received from the Japanese, but they do not result In busi ness. Conditions of crops In foreign exporting coun tries were thus reported by Broomhall'fl Com Trade News of December 5: Russia Latest crop reports have continued quite favorable. The situation at the ports Is very uncertain, but people naturally hope for the best. Shipments la6t week were large, and wo can bo sure that holders will continue to ship away their stuff aa fast as they pos sibly can. India Wc are still without news of general rains, and season is now getting well ad vanced. The officials do not consider the sit uation as serious and it is certain that there Is Ull ample time for good crops to be ob tained in the late regions, but although these are the chief exporter, yet there will not be a good harvest if the other districts fare bad ly. Moderate quantities continue to be ex ported, and we should certainly see an In crease If there were an Improvement -in crop prospects. , Australia The tall end of the old crop Is being shipped out and. as we nhowed lass, week, prospects for the new season are fair. Argentina The government has announced that tho November frosts did only Insignificant damage to tho crops, and our own agent at Buenos Ayres continues to snd favorable re ports concerning wheat. On the other hand, more or lesn unfavorable reports continue to lxs circulated in America, and It Is generally ack nowledged that the flaxseed crop Is disappoint ing, one cable lately received In Liverpool putting tho outturn 20 per cent below last year's. Shipments of wheat last week were larac, but much of the stuff was for non European destinations. GOOD DEMAND TOR. TURKEY?. Trices Steadily Maintained Up to the Close Eggs Are Lower. As was expected, receipts of turkeys yester day were lighter than on Thursday, and an Rctlve demand cleaned up most of the offer inrs. Prices held steady around 20 and 1 cents for good average fowls. Some extra fancy turkeys brought 22 cents, and on the other hand, culls sold low, most of the No. 2 stock going at 17 and 18 cents. One very poor Jot only brought S cent. Geese and ducks also moved well, but chickens were again a drug on the market, with 10 centn as the top and few buyers at that. Efcgs dropped to 30 cents flat. Purchasers continue to hold off and stocks to accumu late, which does not promise well for the market In the comlnr week. The movement in butter was sufficient to keep stocks down, and the feeling was there fore flnn. The cheese market was strong, active and unchanged. ELEVEN-CENT HOP BUSINESS. Horst Buys in Eugene at That Price Pur chase by Seavey Metxler. Another 11 -cent hop purchase wa made by the E. Clemens Hojtt Company yesterday. Their agent, Hayes, at Eugene, bought the Rhodes lot at that figure, amounting to 150 bales. Ernest "Wells, the Portland agent of the company, accepted the Miller lot. bought at Uillsboro, Tuesday. Seavey & Metxler yesterday purchased the Knox Bros,' lot of 70 bales at Eugene at 10 cents. They have also purchased the O, 1L Cone lot ot 6S bales at Buttevllle at the same lirlce. Fruits and Vegetable Active. Holiday buying in the fruit and vegetable line practically came to a close yesterday af ternoon. The week was a highly successful one and everybody Is satisfied. All the Cali fornia truck received by steamer and by rail was cleaned up, and several other lines, such as orange, bananas and enveet potatoes, ran very low. The next arrivals announced are a car of celery and a car of sweets, due Tues day. Bank Clearings. Bank clearings or the Northwestern cities e;erday were as follows: . , Clearing. Balances. ANNOUNCEMENT OF MERGER New York Lines Show Good Net Gains VaioB Pacific Goes to Xcw 3IIsli Record Market Broad and Active, N&W TORK. Dec 22. Interest la Use stock, market converged very largely In the hares of the local transportation companies. These IsBues were very strong and active on the announcement of a virtual conclusion of nego tiations whereby the Metropolitan Street Rail way Company and Its allied Interests come un der control of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company, thus giving the latter Interests prac tically a monopoly of all the traction facilities on Msnhattan Island. Some ert of a deal Involving these Important Interests has been expected for a long time, but It exact form was always) matter of Idle speculation. The exact details of the deal were not obtainable during market hours today, but enough was learned to indicate that the transfer would be effected on terms sat isfactory to the purchasers. The new Interest" in Metropolitan are said to Include several prominent Individuals Identified with the Penn sylvania and other great railway systems. So far aa could be learned, the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company Is not Included la the deal, as It now stands, but the fact that representa tives of that company were In conference with the new Metropolitan interests today was re garded as mye than a mere coincidence. Change of control of Metropolitan Is said to carry with It Important ccacloa la the way of proposed nubw-ay extent lor.. It is net unlikely that new securities will be Issued for those outstanding in the name of the Metro politan Company. At any rate. It Is under stood the transfer from old to new Interests will Involve a comparatively small cash out lay. The tractions led the market from the out set, thousands of &arcs of Metropolitan Street Railway and Metropolitan Securities making Initial gains of 2 to 4 points. Interborough opened on the curb with an advance of over S points and was the feature of that market throughout, attaining a new high record. Net calns of these Issues for the day were 2j for Metropolitan Street Railway. 4 v for Metro politan Securities and S for Interborough. Transactions In these stocki as a group, constituted the major portion of the day" business although the general market later became broad and active In the face ef s 16-per-ccnt mosey rate The prevalHag rate of the day. however, was nearer S per cent. Shares Uf the Pennsylvania Railway and sub sidiary companies. Including Reading, R. & O.. C. fc O.. Norfolk & Western and P.. C C & St. I. were especially strong. Union la clflc west to a new high record and aa active demand for Southern Pacific advanced that tttock a point with St. Paul, and the North wef'trmH and Atchison participating la tfce day's general advances. The only hlgh-ela railway Issue to display weakness was Illinois Central. Aside from the movements In Sagar and Virginia-Carolina Chemical, there were no note worthy movements In the tndustrlsl group. Surprlo: was expressed at the failure oC the United States Steel issues to make caere Im mediate response to the favorable trade condi tions. The market reacted slightly In the last hour, but rallied In the final trading and the closing was strong.
