IS THE MORNING OREGONIAN, SATURDAY, NOT3EXBER 4, 105. ALASKA M HNE PliAXS jLAID TO feUILD NORTH &SD SOUTH IiIXE. Harry Wlilte and Associates Prepare to Spend $40,000,660 to Con struct 5000 Miles of Road. IiOS ANGELES, Xov. 3. The Evening ExprcsL says: Alaska -will have a railway Its entire length from north to south and giving communication with the outside world, It plans which are being formulated In this city are carried out. Harry "White, formerly ilayor of Seattle, Is at the head Of the enterprise, which Includes an ap plication to Congress during the coming session for a Government subsidy. The Idea, as outlined, is for the Government to guarantee the bonds of the proposed company, which Is yet to be organized for the purpose, the promoters using the credit thus obtained - to raise the funds for building the line. It Is exected that Senator Samuel H. Piles, of Washington, will father the scheme in Congress. If successful, the enterprise will in volve an expenditure of about J4O.O0O.000. The road will be nearly 6000 miles In length. NORTH COAST IS INDEPENDENT Director Snys New Road Has Back ing That Can Fight Harrlman. NORTH YAKIMA. Wash., Nov. 2. (Special.) O. A. Fechter. one of the di rectors of the North Coast Railway, said today: "The North Coast is absolutely inde pendent of all other railways- So far there have been no stops taken to "con nect with any of the other systems. " e are no more connected with the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul than the farmers of the valley. The men of the North Coast are able to finance the road for a new transcontinental line If they wish, and their standing is such that neither Harrlman nor the Northern Pacific can lceep them from accomplishing, the work. It they see fit to take it up. You might know we arc not of the Harrlman party from the fact that we are working through Walla "Walla and the Blue Mountains, and If we were go ing to connect with the Union Pacific we could make a much closer connection than by that route. It may be that later on the North Coast will Join the Gould system, but at the present time there is no connection between the two. It may fco that the North Coast will be an en tirely new system across the continent. Tout It Is more than likely that we will con nect with one of the existing systems." In view of .he fact that the Gould sys tem, the Northwestern, has been com pleted as far west as the Eastern line of Idaho, and the further fact that sur veyors are at work in the Blue Moun tains east of Walla Walla, the North Coast may bo a part of this system. There has' been no new developments in Yakima since the first of the week. Extra forces of men have, been put to working grading along the Nachez Val ley and a corps of surveyors is working between here and Sunnyslde. The com pany Is still purchasing small tracts of land In and near this city preparatory to building the roundhouse, station and( car shops. There Is a great shortage of cars on the Northern Pacific in the Yakima Val ley, Farmers cannot get rid of their products. The demand fgr Yakima hay and potatoes is very large, but shipments are light. The company has taken care of the fruit shipments to Eastern points, "out has cut out Western shipments of any sire except by local freight and express. The Iiaw Protects Mr. Laws. ASTORIA, Or., Nov. 3. (Special.) At St Helens yesterday afternoon Judge Mc Brlde issued a writ of mandamus as prayed for in the suit filed here yesterday morning by W. C Laws vs. Olof Ander son, Auditor and Police Judge for, the City of Astoria. A copy of the writ was Berved on the Auditor today. It com mands him to print Mr. Laws' name on the Republican primary election ticket and also commands the Auditor that If Mr Laws is nominated at the primaries as a candidate for 'Police Commissioner, to print his name on the ballot for the city election. ' More Water for Ccntralla. CENTRALIA. Wash., Nov. 3. The Cen tralla Water Company has an engineer In Ccntralla and Is planning extensive im provements. Harvey L. Johnson, presi dent of the company, states active work of bettering the system will be com menced at once. The company desires, "ho says, to put In a gravity system, but the cost makes this impracticable. Work of reconstruction will be commenced when the engineer reports. A well system will be established. A new steam pump will be put In, and the reservoir on the hill enlarged again. Boys Will Build Gymnasium. CENTRALIA. Wash., Nov. 3. The Cen tralla High School Athletic Association pas plans under way to build a gymnasium this Winter. The School Board has sig nified Its willingness to give the boys ground. It is the intention to start the hulldlng, and let succeeding classes com plete It. The Centralia School Board also has calls out for bids on two new school rooms. The schools are overcrowded and something has to be done at once. Sailor Horsethlef Is Caught. THE DALLES, Or.. Nov. S. (Special.) H A. Riley, an cx-sallor of the Spanish American War. who stole a horse from Prank H. Phillips, of Dufur. some weeks ngo, was sentenced yesterday by Judge Bradshaw to two years In the peniten tiary and today started for Salem la charge of the Sheriff. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT.
