THE MORNING OREGONIAN, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28. 1905. HOLD UP TWELVE Merchandise Purchased on Credit Today, Monday and Tuesday Will Go on Your November Account The Meier Frank Store Open Tonight Until 9:30 IARBOOM 1 MEN Two Highwaymen Compel Pa cific Hotel Guests to Throw Up Hands. FLEE WITH LITTLE BOOTY Bartender Is Robbed ot Watch and Till Is Rifled Frightened Man Raises Alarm, but Is Not Heeded. "Good evening, gentlemen. Kindly raise your hands and lino up behind the stove." "With these words, two highwaymen, their laces covered with masks, pushed open the barroom door of the Pacific Ho tel, at Tenth and Qulmby streets, at 7 o'clock last night. "While the taller ot the two covered the occupants of the room with two revolvers, compelling all to line up against the wall, the shorter robbed the money till behind the bar of $6 and took a silver watch from V. A. Cook, the bartender. Twelve 3Icn Held Up. Twelve men. Including two bartenders V. A. Cook and Frank Cook and the pro prietor of the hotel, W. H. Lehman, were Jn the barroom when the highwaymen en tered. One of the patrons of the hotel, when the thugs entered the place, jumped from a chair near the entrance to the dln-Jng-room, and, rushing through before he could be -stopped, shouted, "The place Is being held up!" A great shout of laughter went up at the ludicrous appearance of the excited man, TO BE OX SAFE SIDE. Acting Chief of Police Grltzmacher yesterday It-sued the following order, directed to the Captains: Instruct the officers of your relief to keep a sharp lookout for nafe burglars. Toola were stolen from a blacksmith ihop last night, which looks plainly as though criminals of this class are here, as the tools stolen are of the pattern and such as are generally used for those purposes. Give particular attention to all plaoe where safes and valuables, otc. are kept. Also note all noises frem explosives and InVostigate, if any i heard. Also note and Investigate all sus ptefous characters thoroughly, who are out at late hours, and arrest all who do not account satisfactorily. and he was laughed out of the room at the supposed huge Joke of a barroom full of men being held up. The uproar In the dining-room frightened the highwaymen, not, however, until they had robbed the till and taken Mr. Cook's watch. As the laughter died away In the dining-room, the man who was covering the room full of men with his revolvers com manded his companion to stop. As the shorter hacked out of the door, the master of the situation bade the occupants of the room good-night, and the two disap peared in the darkness. The hold-up was the most daring that has been psrpetrated In Portland for months. The.coolheaded manner in which the trick was turned, notwithstanding that It was at an early hour of the even ing, convinced thc inmates of the hotel that the hold-up was not being done by amateurs. No Resistance Offered. Not a man offered resistance or snowed signs of battle as the big robber in a well-modulated voice simply requested the 12 to raise their hands and line up against the wall. A wild scramble fol lowed to comply with the request as quickly as possible, but as the dpor to the dining-room, which leads into the saloon, was closed when tf?e frightened informant i-ushed through, the noise was not heard. The Cook brothers walked from behind the bar at a demand from the big man and took their places at the end of the line against the wall. As the shorter of the two opened the till Jid took $6 from it, the taller leaned against the doorsill. keeping an eye toward the sidewalk and the other on his victims. One of his two rovolvers with which hp was holding the 12 men was low ered, but with the other one cocked be attracted ju3t as much attention. Dotectives Snow, Kerrigan and Hellyer ware sent from police headquarters to make an investigation. A good descrip tion was obtained, but the robbers were not captured. Bligh, proprietor of The Elk saloon and his bartender, Joe McPherson, were arraigned before Judge Frazer yes terday on two charges. One Is that they sold llauor to Preston Boozer, a boy 17 years old, and the other that they per mitted Annie Bates, 17 years old, and Stella Veal, 20 years of age, to frequent the saloon. The statute prohibits females under 21 years from entering places where Intoxicating liquors are sold. These cases started in the Municipal Court and are now in the hands of Robert Galloway, special prosecutor in the Juvenile Court work. The defendants were released on bail and they also furnished bonds for the appearance of the two cirls as witnesses against them by order of Judge Frazer.
