Sandhurst Brings Tale of Rus sian Commander's Sui cide at Tsing Tau. 2 SAILOR BRJlNED OFFICER Jjay Blame of Defeat to Incompetency of Those in Command Later, They All Go Ashore to Enjoy Themselves. ASTORIA, Or., June 29. (Special.)-The British steamer Sandhurst arrived in this evening, IS days end 21 hours from Muro ran. Captain Robertson reports an un eventful trip, although dense fogs were encountered nearly all the tvay across the Pacific While the Sandhurst -was at Tsing Tau, China, recently, she lay -within a short distance of the Russian warship Czare vitch, which limped into port with funnels shot away and looking like a pepper box. Captain Robertson says that when the news of Admiral Rojestvensky's defeat was received, the commander of the Czar evitch committed suicide by shooting him self. As another officer of the vessel was reading the account of Rojestvensky's de feat to the crew, one of the sailors picked up . hammer, and, saying. "It Is such men as you who are to blame for this," Lrained the nicer. Both the dead ofllcors were burled on the following day. The sailors wont ashore then and spent the time riding bicycles and having a generally good time. The Sandhurst passed the straits where the naval conflict took place several days later, but saw no wreckage. RESTS AT SAGAMORE HILL PRESIDENT TO RECEIVE PLENI POTENTIARIES THERE. Mayflower ami Dolphin Will Bring Russians and Japanese From Washington. OYSTER BAY. June President Roosevelt, after two days of hard work and genuine pleasure at the alumni and with the students at Harvard College, rested tonight at his home at Sagamore Hill. This evening an informal reunion was held at Sagamore Hill, the members of the several Roosevelt families calling on the President. JCo official visitors of importance were received during the day. It is expected that the President will re main in Oyster Bay until the latter part of September. Until within a few days it has been supposed the President would return to "Washington to receive formally the plen ipotentiaries of Russia and Japan when they shall meet at the National capital, but while no definite decision has been reached in regard to the matter, it Is quite probable now that the reception, should one be deemed neccstfary. will be held at Sagamore H11L Tentative plans have been made to have the Ministers of the two countries brought to Oyster Bay, very directly from Washington, on the cruiser May flower and Dolphin, the Russian contin gent in one vessel and the Japanese la the other. No definite date for the meet ing of the envoi's has yet been tixed. Thus far neither Russia nor Japan has communicated formally to President Roosevelt the names of Its plenipotentiaries. Little Joke on the President. BRIDGEPORT, Conn., June 28. After a short address to a crowd of several thou sand people assembled at the railroad station here. President Roosevelt left Bridgeport shortly after S o'clock this morning on the Government yacht Sylph bound for Oyoter Bay. One of the llrst objects which met the President's eye as he reached the tempo rary platform erected at the north end of the station was a trained bear, which bore a placard marked "One You Did Not Get." As the President saw It he re marked quickly "It is a good thing you were not in Colorado," to the great amusement of the crowd. Welcomed by the Villagers. OYSTER BAY, June 2. President Roosevelt arrived in Oystor Bay and was given an unusually demonstrative greet ing by the residents of the village. The railroad station, where Mrs. Roosevelt awaited in a carriage with Queatin and Ethel Roosevelt, was lined by school children drowod in white and waving flags. Forming in line, the villagers passed the President and shook hands with him, after which the President drove to Sagamore Hill. The President spent the afternoon quietly.
