FIGHTING TO SAVE PRESTIGE Teamsters Will Strike to Help the Locked-Out Garment-Workers, and .Disorderly Scenes j May Result.. ( iilCAGO, April 6. Special.) Begin ning at S o'clock tomorrow morning, Chicago will face a general strike of teamsters, a labor movement always ac companied by riots and Bloodshed. Judge Dunne, the incoming Mayor, may find something to distract- his attention from municipal ownership until the strike is settled. The strike will be of the "syra xathetic" variety, always more vicious and disorderly than where men directly Interested are involved. Chicago has been singularly free from labor disturbances s.ncc the disastrous stockyards strike, and there are many scores to settle. .After a conference tonight Between R. J, Thorne. of Montgomery, "Ward & Co., and a committee of the Chicago Federa tion of Labor, the union chiefs announced that they would order all union drivers to stop doing any work whatever for the big mail order house after 8 o'clock tomorrow morning. AM Teamsters Will Be Drawn In. If the strike is ordered, all of the rail way express wagon-drivers In the city are expected to be drawn into the con flict Most of the clothing made by the nonunion garment-workers who took the places of strikers last Xovember is han dled by the express companies. The strike is to assist the striking garment workers, and the flr3l move of the wagon men will be to stop delivers' of nonunion clothing by hiose companies. General agents of the express compa nies have determined upon a course for tomorrow. Any of their employes who refuse to do their, work will be dis charged. This, according to Mr. Barry, business agent of the express wagon men, wjll be the signal for a general strike of railway express teamsters and con ductors. Coal, furniture, truck and provision wagon-drivers will be drawn Into the strike. No union driver will be permit ted to do any work for Montgomery. "Ward & Co. until the "garment-workers grievances are adjusted, according to la bor leaders, -j Federation's Fight for Life. The Chicago Federation of Labor, urged on by the American Federation of La bor, will pay all striking drivers bene fits During the last year the American Federation has seen a number of Its strongest unions wiped out of existence. A rival organization has been started by the socialists. It is said to be the plan of President Gompers to take a hand here and win the garment-workers' strike and prevent the destruction of the union. The stockyards unions, the machinists and the metal trades, the flat and office build ing janitors' unions have been broken up. and the American Federation has deter mined to save the garment-workers and its own prestige in Chicago. It is feared that the socialists will be able to carry out their plan and break up the American Federation, if the old National body does not get . out in the field and win the garment-workers' strike. The . teamsters have been chosen 10 do the work, but the indications are that, if they start to cause a general dis tijrbance here, the business Interests will be united and put an end to many of the outrages to which they have been sub jected by the unions for several years.
