12 THE MORNING OREGONIAN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 190-L FINE FOWLS ON VIEW Annual Oregon Poultry Show Is Open. DIN OF BARNYARD SOUNDS Cats and Guinea Pigs, Turkeys and Swans, Rabbits and Parrots, dickens and Pheasants Vie for Public Attention. Br-r-r-ce, said the white "Wyandotte pullet. ' I m a winner," announced the Cochin c k ;?how me." said the Chinese pheasant. And the annual poultry show o the tVegon Poultry Association was on. The show is given this year at the corner of Third and Taylor streets. Poultry, pets and other creatures arc there in abun xiancc. The sounds rising from the build in?; arc as those comlns from a concen trated and condensed farmyard. Gay. old roosters strut In their best plumage, iier.s crow with delight, pheasants show the- pretty feathers, cats curl up in ith"!- stalls, turkeys cobble with joy. STiinea piss hide behind one another, rab bits look at the spectators with dreamy es, the black swan arches its neck ad- lilrlngly and .parrots scream a welcome. trt-Jlr the judges walk up and down the aisles picking out the ribbon winners. The show this year may well be com plimented. It is at once well arranged and complete. There Is a black-tall ban Sam of the species Japanese, with a comb which makes It look as though he had attempted to swallow a beefsteak and 4thc steak had stuck in his craw. There Is the Polish cock who looks as though "he never combed his hair, bantams with xho fire of battle in their eyes. Cochins In all their splendor. Leghorns that would grace the coops of the most fas tidious fancier. Andalusians, "Wyandottcs, '"Winorcas. Houdans. Hamburgs, Redcaps, Dorkings. P!ymouth Rocks and the rest are all There. In one window are four Chinese pheasants, fresh captured from the wilds cf Oregon. They are a trifle timid, but nil the more beautiful in their timidity. Pigeons of all sorts from the common, vcry-day plo pigeon to the homing va riety and the wise carriers, are to be eeen Rabbits arc there in large numbers, among thorn an exquisite specimen of the Alaska white. Admirers of feline beauty will have nothing to disappoint "them when they see the few specimens exhibited. For an oddity there is an ar.xm&l purporting to be a cross between a Chinese pheasant and a brown Leg horn The judges, Elmer Dixon, of Oregon City, TV. M. Browning, or Ogden. and Thomas Wilkinson, of Nanaimo, B. C, were busy yesterday examining the f-w!s. and awards In all classes will be ir.nxie this afternoon. The display of Plymouth Rocks is par-tJ-alarly commendable. Buff and "White lio( ks are shown to good advantage. Ttewn the conter aisle, where the light is not so good, is a Cochin cock who per sists In announcing: "Here it's vnornlng ai the time." Surrounding him is as pretty a collection of hens of his breed tui was ever seen. Leghorns are shown t-3 advantage also. Polish cocks and henB attracted much attention yesterday. Trcre are several specimens of Red Caps above the ordinary, and Winorcas are all that could be expected. ? umbers of poultry fanciers from "out of the city are In attendance at the show, sxnong them Emma J. Mellette, editor of the Western Poultry World, of Denver. There was a good attendance at the show yesterday and it will no doubt continue. DEVOTION OF A WIFE. Mrs. W. H. Whorton Tolls Over Wash tub to Pay Husband's Debt. Over the washboard, in her humble home jit 763 Belmont street, bends Mrs. W. H. "Whorton. Day after day, unceasingly save for a few short hours of sleep, she works on. Her object Is to save her hus band from disgrace and she "trill accom plish it. It is a story fraught with bit terness, of a woman's undying devotion jmd love. In September W. H. Whorton disap peared. With him, supposedly, went 5120, belonging to the United Artisans, of which -order he was the treasurer at the time, ot until a few days ago did the wife as certain anything of the whereabouts of iher husband. She learned he had been ill tn the Wayside Mission Hospital, at Se attle. Now, Mrs. Whorton says, the shortage -of her husband has been made good. She borrowed $120 from personal friends, paid it to the Artisans and holds a receipt for It So, over the washboard. In her humble home, she works unceasingly to uphold the name of the man of her choice, for she declares he never stole the money, v.but was robbed, and that he will bo home Christmas to explain everything and begin life anew. FATE OF A GUKNEE. 5oes Hunting on Sunday and Loses His Wife. ' If you go out hunting you'll come back home and find me gone," was the warning given James Buchanan by his wife. Pearl Buchanan, when he shouldered his gun and marched away from his domicile in entralia, Sunday. And suiting action to Tcord she packed up and came to Port land When the husband returned his hearth was cold and his wife gone.
