Mrs. Nina Larqwe Pleads for Serious
Consideration of Children.
PORTLAND. Dec 12. (To the Editor.) In
an Interview -with an Oregonlan 'reporter, Mr.
Ben Greet, of the Everyman Company, made
the following remarks:
"We must try and get the pepple to think
seriously once in awhile. If we only go to
the theater to be amused we will have nothing
but the flapdoodle drama. The English and
Americans 6ay, 'We can't take the children to
see the serious drama; they're too young.' In
that they are mistaken. It is In youth that
lasting Impressions are made, and If the chil
dren are to see nothing but 'Foxy Grandpa
and 'Buster Brown they will grow up with
Foxy Grandpa and ' 'Buster Brown tastes.
Take the German, for example. There are no
wiser or "better people In the world, and the
German parent takes his children to see
Shakespeare, Goethe and Schiller. They are
taught to appreciate the good and ennobling
as seen on the Kage."
They are so true tkat I would like to say
yea, verily, to them again and again. I de
sire to show how the times have changed since
my day in theatrical matters, and decidedly
for the worse. In explaining this. I may have
to use the seemingly egotistical "I" too much,
but if It is In a good cause I may, perhaps, be
forgiven. Ab Mr. Greet cays, in youth we form
lasting impressions. What do you think were
the first playa I saw and enjoyed Immensely,
between 9" and 12 years? Why, "PIzarro,"
"Henry IV," "Fazio." "Richard ni" and all
the Shakespearean plays. I never saw "Henry
IV again since I was 10 years old till within
a year or two; yet the characters stood forth
clear-cut in my memory. "Fazio," a grandly
beautiful tragedy (written by a minister, by
the way), I have never seen since my child
hood, yet I .can remember almost all of It,
and shall never forget the beautifully pathetic
face and graceful action of Julia Dean H'ayne,
who was an inimitable and Incomparable Bl
anea. There were no so-called "musical come
dies." nor horse-plays, nor so-called society
dramas, then. The dramatic artists of that
day had a large field of tragedies and genteel
comedies and classic dramas to draw from.
Eaah man or woman aimed to play In his
or hor day all the great parts, and we went
to see the same plays over again, with different
artists In them. People read Shakespeare to
their children, and they went to the play hav
ing had what was necessary explained before
hand. They knew no other drama, ,and having
been prepared montally they enjoyed keenly
what was set before them. For Instance, For.
rest came with a round of Shakespearean
plays, then Booth the cider, Davenport, Ma
tilda Heron and others in the same plays, and
it was our delight to compare their efforts. If
I could not go and my dearest chum did, we
eagerly waited for the next meeting, and then
she would pend hours In a detailed report of
euch heavy plays as "Medea." "Evadne" and
all the long lift of the great tragedies.
The same state of affairs prevailed as to the
literature of the day. We were not cursed
with piles of rank, pernicious, yellow-covered
novels. We girls read novols ye, and plenty
of 'them. But what were they? Bulwer's.
W alter Scott s. Dldkena. Thackeray's, etc.
books sparkling with the brightest thoughts.
In my circle there was not a girl of 15 who
had net seen the best plays, and none who
could not" converse Intelligently upon the great
novels, and the great poetc, such tut Walter
Scott. Byron. Burns. Milton and others. We
even -went so far as Young's "Night Thoughts."
.When I compare myself and my contem
porarles with the girls of 15 and 16 years of
today, I might, perhaps, be tempted to con
elder myself and them prodigies did I not
know we owed it all to the training of In
tellcctual and far-seeing parents and the fact
that we seemed to have been brought up In a
more literary age.
This Is one case where looking backward re-
vrals a better ntate of affairs than the present.
with all Its boasted advantages. Young girls
read today yes, .but what! Is there super
vision 'of their mental food? Take away the
yellow-covered novel, give them Scott's "Quen
tln Durward." for instance, or novels of the
other great authors, and they would soon see
the .dlfterenee and learn to love good fiction
I -was a healthy and strong child, and romped
vigorously, but I was, when out of breath
haled Jn and placed at my mother's side to be
read, and explained to. Perhaps 1 did net
quite like this at first, but I soon looked
forward to the pleasures of thone readings,
You will hardly believe me when I say part
of the reading was Lamartlne's "French Revo
lutlon" (which wc were comparatively near
to). I have never read It since, but I can
remember to this day some of It.
A)l this proves that children can romp, be
healthy and yet have their minds stored with
UCul reading early. They can, as Ben Greet
"ays. be nothing but "Buster Browns" and
"Foxy Grandpas" unless parents develop them
into something higher. Certainly the stage
has deteriorated. Think or the length of the
slide from high tragedy and pIhmIc drama to
"musical comedy." with a stage full of chores
girls, with each a foot posed on a champagne
bottle and a drinking glass In hand!

Rain has fallen generally during the last 24
hours from San . Francisco north to British
Columbia, while east of the Cascades and the
Sierra Nevadas precipitation was mostly In the
form of snow.
It is cooler In Northern Nevada and warmer
in Southeastern Washington. Elsewhere the
changes In temperature have been unimportant.
The Indications are for rain Tuesday west
of the Cascades and Tain or snow to the cast
of this range of mountains.
